In the Iliad every character has a different characteristic which makes that character unique and different from the rest. Homer creates every character to have very specific traits that gives them a unique role in the book. Agamemnon, Hector, Nestor, and Priam have different roles and characteristics which constructs all of them to be very idiosyncratic and crucial to the story.
Agamemnon has very distinctive attributes that Homer displays in him throughout the book; they have readers believing he is not a good or reliable ruler. He is known for being exceedingly stubborn and having a bad temper, which are two inferior qualities to have. Throughout the book Agamemnon is conveyed as a terrible King, letting his anger get in the way of ruling. During times of discouragement he makes wrong decisions that are unfair. He does not realize that a king is not supposed to yield to his own desires according to his emotions. He fails to perceive that authority demands responsibility and that personal desires come later once the matter at hand is resolved. We see him displaying these aspects when he insists on keeping his war prize, Chryseis, despite her father pleading for her. Agamemnon believes that she is his and that he shouldn’t have to give her back. Eventually he realizes he has to give her back, but not without him getting something in return so he sends his men to take Brieses, Achilles’ prize, from Achilles. The decision to keep Chryseis before giving her back was clearly a conclusion he made based of off his own aspirations. At the end of the book Priam honors Zeus for helping him get his son’s body back and have a proper burial. The fact that he honors Zeus expresses that he is a good man and although he had many obstacles he is still thankful and respects the gods.
Through Agamemnon, Hector, Nestor, and Priams idiosyncratic characteristics they played crucial roles to the story. All warriors have different characteristics which helps make the story interesting and thrilling. Homer had many characters convey different attributes that compared and contrasted throughout all characters in the book. Homer defiantly succeeded in creating every character to have distinctive qualities throughout the book.
