“He knows you have her. He knows what you’ve been doing. Put him off. Take control” (Preston273). The mysterious kidnapper Colin Brown is now a part of the search for the girl he holds captive in his basement cellar. Colin thinks that since he’s framed his co-worker for the murder of Christy that the police wont be suspicious of him. Summers boyfriend Lewis will not stop searching for her until he finds her. Lewis and Colin are in the same search group and Lewis can tell that there’s a little something off about Colin, but he’s not sure what it is yet. In this journal I will be predicting, questioning, and connecting to the characters in my novel. I predict that within the next few chapters Lewis will find more details leading to the fact …show more content…
that Colin kidnapped Summer. I believe this because as the search for Summer goes on Lewis becomes more suspicious of the people he’s around. Colin can feel Lewis’s dour look at him for every word that comes out of his mouth. I think that Lewis is suspicious of Colin because of the way Colin responds to his questions. First Lewis notices that Colin Brown comes searching for Summer alone. Usually when you’re out searching for someone you come in pairs if not groups of people. Since Lewis and Henry saw Collin walking out of his house with sewing equipment they both get the memo that something up. I honestly would find it a little strange If a man told me he lived alone with no wife, but walked out of his house caring bags of sewing supplies. Why does Clover aka Colin Brown considering the girls he kidnaps his family of flowers?
I think he wants a perfect family because when he was younger his mother walked in on her husband cheating on her. Collins mom gaped at what she saw, and screamed at her husband to leave and never come back. The flowers represent a pure happy life, as Colin tries to have the perfect family. “Sweetheart, flowers are not ‘yuk’. They’re nature’s most beautiful creation” (Preston224). I think the flowers are most meaningful to Clover because every time he kidnaps a new girl, he always talks about how they’re the most beautiful girls he’s seen and how he can take care of them better than anyone else can. He even gives them flower names to represent the perfect bundle of flowers, like Rose, Violet, Poppy, and Lily. I think Clover does all of this because his dad tore apart his family when he was a young boy, and it had such a big impact on Colin that he feels the need to have his own perfect family, and protect everyone else’s families by murdering …show more content…
prostitutes. I can relate to Colin in a way that I understand how he’s hurt by his family being torn apart, because my parents are also divorced, and that having things happen when you’re a kid, or making special connections to objects or people can have a big affect on your future.
“ I called and started crying. She didn’t hear me-she was too busy shouting” (Preston225). When I was 6 my parents got divorced because they could never agree on things and one parent thought they were always right and the other was always wrong. That’s taken affect into my life because no matter the argument I always feel like I’m right or that I can argue my point because that was the environment I group up in. I had to endure my pain with great fortitude because I knew that wasn’t the way I wanted to live my life when I was older, but it seems that now I cant help the way I act sometimes because its just what I’m used
too. As one can see the prediction made was accurate to the supporting details of Lewis questioning Colin’s help in the search for Summer, the questions asked were answer with facts from the novel supporting my reasons on why I believed Colin wanted a pure and perfect family of flowers, and the connection made between Colin and I was accurate as I explain what happened when I was younger. Does Lewis really know that Collin has summer? Can Lewis find the truth out before it’s too late?

At the end of the previous summer, Duncan tried to save a drowning girl and failed. Not being a hero has really affected his life, particularly his relationship with his girlfriend Kim. Also, he is now terrified of swimming, especially when the nightmares come back. Duncan's summer job is with the public transit lost and found. While trying to make the hours go faster, Duncan looks through the items, especially the books and golf clubs. One day he discovers an unmarked journal with no name, which depicts sadistic animal torture experiments, boasts of arson fires, and the planning for the serial killings of three women. Duncan decides to make amends for his failure last summer by tracking down the owner of the journal by using clues left hidden in the diary. After talking with his friend Vinny, Duncan decides to turn the journal over to the police, but they do not take him seriously, so he decides to get help from Vinny, do some research at the local library, and find out where the killer works and lives so they can prove to the police the diary is for real. But in the process when Duncan finds the house of the serial killer, he decides to take a look in it but unfortunately at that very time the serial killer appears and chases Duncan to the subway station. They get into fight there and they both fell on the subway tracks in the station where they get hit by the train. Duncan luckily survives but the serial killer dies.
“She still today never told me she loved me…never… never in her life … it’s too hard to explain,” says Anthony Sowell as he mentions his mother while he is being interrogated by Cleveland Homicide Detective (Sberna). The classic neighbor that every family wishes to have, friendly, helpful and caring was holding back numerous secrets. In Anthony Sowell’s actions of the rape, beatings and murder of 11 innocent women, he demonstrates the qualities of a human monster while showing how nurture creates a personality as well as proving that humans are capable of creation more fear than those who are written about in fiction.
The obvious theme of the story is crime and mystery, however as a reader when reading beyond, it is realizable this story is not only based on finding the true evil. This novel consists of another theme which is decision-making, and friendship. Collin instantly thought of a plan to help his friend and do the right thing. Alike this event, teenagers need to come to learn to think outside of the box, figure a way out and not narrow the
Parents want what is best for their children, but sometimes they expect too much and children can feel trapped. The only way kids feel they can escape from the pressure is to gain independence through rebelling. The short story “Brother Dear”, by Bernice Friesen suggests the idea that when individuals pursue independence by rebelling against expectations set out for them, they can become estranged from loved ones and feel like they have let them down; however, despite the pressure an individual may feel they can often remain optimistic about their situation. Greg grows up with a lot of pressure from his family to do well in life, the only way he feels he can escape this pressure is rebelling against what they want.
It’s most common to have this relationship with parents especially when a teenager. When observing surroundings its typical to find a disagreement, these examples are found anywhere from supermarkets, schools, and public events.
When I was a kid I didn’t have my parents they got pregnant at a young age and couldn’t keep me and my older brother so we were split up. My parents ended up giving my brother to my grandmother when he was just a baby, and then I came along and my parents ended up getting a divorce so I went to live with first my father but he was too into the woman he was dating at the time so I was shuffled around from family member to family member till I ended up living with my aunt. My brother was raised with all the confidence he could get he was praised by my grandmother. Everything he did she would give him the love that he needed because he didn’t have our parents and me on the other hand I didn’t get that type of love I was told that I wouldn’t amount to anything and the only thing I would be great at is being a garbage man. I was a very active child I couldn’t really sit still so I would get in trouble a lot because of it and I would get told a lot that that was the reason why my parents didn’t want me because I didn’t know how to act, I guess that is what Dweck meant when she was explaining how when you falsely praise someone or praise someone too much they can get a big head and get dependent on it and those who were not praised enough got the motivation to prove everyone wrong. I never really felt like I was truly loved by my family I
In “Midnight, Licorice, Shadow” by Becky Hagenston the author successfully created complex characters that help motivated the tension in the story. Haegenston capability of switching between the past in the present to further understand the character’s actions encourages the pace of the story. The Vietnam War was one of the most controversial wars the United States has ever encountered. During the mid 50’s, communism was dominant in Asia and was greatly expanding to Vietnam. There was no peaceful way to come up with a compromise between North and South Vietnam that would negotiate how Vietnam should be governed and thus they resolved to warfare. The United States knew that the expansion of communism was a worldwide issue and becoming a international source of power. They feared that communism would spread to every other country in that region and eventually overpower the United States. Therefore, the US government decided to help in the war with the south vietnamese who was democratic and fight against the communist north.

My parents were in a heated debate over financial issues, an alien topic to my eleven year old intellect. As the discussion grew in excitability and anger, the room sucked into a suffocating density. At this moment I immediately knew where this was leading and rushed my younger brother upstairs out of harm’s way. There was never a physical harm to protect him from, but it was as though I did this to spare his innocent mind from developing into one like mine; doubtful and angry. Why can’t my parents just get along? Why are they even fighting? Why does my life have to be this way? Why me? Why are they so careless of our feelings? What did we do to deserve this lifestyle? Why us? I spent too much time questioning, and pitying myself over the fact that my parents didn’t love me enough to stay happy with each other. Amongst my questioning always came out the little blip that disrupted my parents arguing, “Are you guys getting a divorce?” I’m not quite sure where I first heard the word, but it became my magic word that took all...
Looking back at my past, I recall my mother and father’s relationship as if it were yesterday. I am only four years old, small and curious; I tended to walk around my home aimlessly. I would climb book shelves like a mountain explorer venturing through the Himalayans, draw on walls to open windows to my own imagination, or run laps around the living room rug because to me I was an Olympic track star competing for her gold medal; however my parents did not enjoy my rambunctious imagination. My parents never punished me for it but would blame each other for horrible parenting skills; at the time I did not understand their fights, but instead was curious about why they would fight.
Coinciding with this digression in school was a turbulent divorce between my parents. Conflict in my
The influences of my family and my life at home have shaped me into the person I am today. My family, consisting of my mother, my father, and two sisters, has not always been one hundred percent functional. Just like any other family, there have been arguments that tear us apart. As a child, the attention that had to be shared between my sisters and I was not always given equally. Even today, the same distribution of attention and affection is not equally given to us. The attention seems to go from my oldest sister, with her problems in school and with life; to the youngest, with her excelling work in her education and sports. My parents don’t seem to realize sometimes that I too am excelling in school, out shining my older and younger sister sometimes. The attention I need for the achievements I obtain is usually never met. Being the middle of three girls is difficult.
My socialization while growing up had everything to do with my parents. In my household I didn’t have just one certain style of parenting. My mother was a permissive parent, and my father was very much an authoritative dad. This was able to happen because my father travels a lot of the time and is out of the house, therefore giving me the chance take advantage of my mom being so much of a push over. When my father was gone on business I could get away with anything such as not cleaning my room, staying up as late as I wanted, and receiving anything I wanted. If my Mom did not giving in to my requests I would just throw a simple temper tantrum and five minutes later victory would be mine. On the other hand when my dad was around everything was to be done his way. If he didn’t think I needed it, I did not get it, no matter how much complaining and whining. In my Dads mind I had to deserve everything I received, if I did something wrong couple days earlier he would remind me about it as I was asking for a bike or what ever else it is I wanted. Don’t get me wrong my dad wasn’t a mean guy or an abusive father, I knew my limits and when every I would get dumb enough to cross that line, he was right there to put back in my place.
Since my early teenage years, I 've always found myself going through different challenges in life and looking for solutions to resolve. Most of the obstacles that I encountered in the past I attempted to resolve alone. In most of the cases, I 've been able to challenge myself and find a way to analyze the issue and come up with solutions. My strategies in resolving problems were always successful until I encountered one of the most challenging problems in my life. A challenge that changed my entire life, mindset and the way I used to approach to problems in life. When I got married, I had to leave my widowed mother alone and this was the hardest separation in her life after my father’s death. My mother didn’t take our separation easy at all;
