Introduction
The Lion King and the Lion King 1 ½ both operate under the ideology that hierarchy and social order structure the society of the animal kingdom, in turn perpetuating the idea that the animals' positions are, in fact, fixed. The first movie disguises that ideology under a veil of unity and community while the Lion King 1 ½ openly confronts the inequality of the society within the animal kingdom. Both movies show how social status can change the way one views a hierarchy society. Those at the bottom of the food chain perceive the the system negatively because it puts them at a disadvantage while this at the top of the food chain have a positive perspective of the system because they benefit form it the most. argument I will be using the opening scenes of each movie to demonstrate that both operate under the guise of hierarchal ideas, though, the Lion King attempts to hide this while the Lion King 1 ½ is very clear about the way society is ordered in the kingdom. Then, I will show how perspective changes the way all of the characters see the ideology. "The Circle of Life:" An Attempt to Disguise a Hierarchal Society The Circle of Life is one of the most recognizable songs from the Lion King and is accompanied by the most famous scene is the movie which shows the animals trade to go so the monkey hold up Simba.
The entire scene is beautiful, the music has a humming underlay that is calming and emotionally evocative. The animation is well done and frankly, it is one of the most heartwarming scenes to come out of a Disney animated film. The Lion King uses this opening scene to set up the concept of unity and harmony amongst the animals of the kingdom, showing their freedom and ability to live in peace. Though, it hides the reality of the natural world which is one determined by a …show more content…
hierarchy. The Lion King begins with the "Circle of Life" ensemble that depicts all of the animals traveling to Pride Rock to see the young prince, Simba. The scene is meant to evoke a sense of community amongst all of the animals whether they be prey or predators. This is because Lion King operates on the ideology that everyone "belongs" despite its continuous ostracization of less "worthy" animals like the hyenas. The lighting is animated to be a warm tone and bright so that the audience subconsciously understands that the scene is meant to be a positive one. The animals are animated softly and we get moments in the beginning like that of the giraffe and his mother walking, the young giraffe lifts his head up and the light of the sun moves onto him in slow motion (Lion King, 1:44). The slowness of scenes like that of the giraffe are meant to evoke the sense of calmness and comfort so that the audience does not feel anxious for the animals' safety. The "Circle of Life" plays in the background of the opening montage and the lyrics seem to perpetuate ideologies of community and finding ones place within that community. The start of the song begins with a Zulu chant that can be translated to english as "Here comes a lion, father Oh yes it's a lion. Here comes a lion, father, Oh yes it's a lion A lion We're going to conquer A lion A lion and a leopard come to this open place." (Lion King, 1:11) The chant makes it very clear that the lions are the primary focus of the scene which is ironic because the chant is said while the screen shows almost every other animal in the kingdom. Though, the chant may be indicative of the state of mind of the animals who are making there way to see their lion king. The song also uses the word, "conquer" in conjunction with the lions so that lions are synonymous with power, acknowledging a hierarchy. The chant itself is in Zulu and the primary audience for the movie was American english speakers, so in a way, the movie tries to disguise its own underlying class structure in which the lions dominate naturally not by merit. Still the parts of the song that are sang in english paint a different story, trying to emphasize the animal kingdom's unity with lyrics such as, "But the sun rolling high through the sapphire sky keeps great and small on the endless round." (Lion King, 1:46) The general message is that all of the animals, no matter their stature, are part of the "circle of life," or part of the community.
In a way, the song makes an attempt at the "we are all equal" ideology by using the most basic form of unity: life. The song uses life as the common denominator for all of the animals without acknowledging the disparity in quality of life for different animals. Rather, it ignores these differences and uses lighting, color tone, and melody to make sure the audience does not
notice. Furthermore, "The Circle of Life" perpetuates the idea that every animal will eventually find their place within the kingdom, which in turn suggests that the animals have free will and do not have predetermines places within the hierarchy of the kingdom. The song gives a much more romantic version of how animals move into their roles: It's the Circle of Life And it moves us all Through despair and hope Through faith and love Till we find our place On the path unwinding In the Circle (Lion King, 1:26) At first glance, the lyrics explain that an animal can find its own "place" within the society or within "the circle" and is supposed to showcase that the animals have mobility and can function in a society as they please. A closer look at the lyrics, however, shows a different perspective. The circle of life as the actually force of mobility as it states that it is the force that "moves us all through," "move" being one of two active verbs in the chorus. The other being "find" which puts an active verb adjacent to the "we" in the line, which refers to those functioning within the kingdom. The animals are given that active verb, "find," a much more passive verb and a much less aggressive one than "moves," which is implies literal force. Though, the audience only hears the song once in the movie and it is played at the same time as one of the most famous scenes within the movie so it os fair to say that most viewers are not likely to read into the lyrics this much. The rest of the chorus uses words like "hope" and "love" to give a one time listener the guise of a functioning community, hiding its true nature.
The verses each deliver a message of equality and the chorus is repeated with the intention of the audience considering their input towards reconciliation. The chorus is repeated 3 times, which is usually done to reinforce the central idea within a song. There are two separate verses, one that starts with the words “black fella white fella” and the other, which starts with “all the people of different races”. This format is repeated to help emphasise the idea that equality is important, regardless of your skin colour. The text structure is ordered in a way that tells a story about equal opportunity, and the way it is formatted is important in communicating this
About 11,000,000 people died during the Holocaust, which was organized by Adolf Hitler. Hitler was Chancellor of Germany from 1933-1945 (12 years). There were about 23 main concentration camps during the Holocaust. Auschwitz was one of them. 6,000,000 of the 11,000,000 people that died were Jews. Shmuel could’ve been one of those Jews. Bruno could’ve been one of the other 5,000,000. The book might not have been true, but it was based on the truth. The movie, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is not as good as the book, because the book is more detailed, and interesting.
Although the movie The Lion King is often times viewed as nothing more than a child-based movie, in actuality, it contains a much deeper meaning. It is a movie that not only displays the hardships of maturation, and the perplexities associated with growing, but it is also a movie that deals with the search for one's identity and responsibility. As said by director Julie Taymor, "In addition to being a tale about a boy's personal growth, the `Lion King' dramatizes the ritual of the `Circle of Life'." Throughout The Lion King, Simba must endeavor through the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth to take his place in the circle of life, as king of the pridelands.
For all their differences the Lord of the Flies and Simon have one singular trait in common; they both know what the pig’s head really means for the boys on the island. At first glance, the Lord of the Flies is just a pig’s head on a stick, however it is so much more than that. The moment Jack and his hunter’s kill that pig, a part of them is lost forever and this lost part is their moral sense of right and wrong (149).
Lord of Flies is a movie based a the novel named Lord of Flies, It is written by William Golding. In 1963, Lord of Flies was shoot into a film. It is directed by Peter Brook, music by Raymond Leppard. In the film, there is a plane crush. The British boys who are in the plane landed in an Uninhabited island. After they accept that they need to live in the island, they elected Ralph to be their leader. Jack want to be the leader too, but he didn’t gets enough vote as Ralph. Ralph ask Jack and his men to go hunt, and he and other boys will light a fire in order to get rescue. At first, everything went smoothly. However, when Jack killed a pig and give meat to the boys, the boys start to listen to Jack more. Piggy is a fat boy who has asthma, he
One of the biggest ideals shown throughout history is the need for power and dominance. Whether it comes from Hitler taking over Germany and trying to enact a full-scale genocide of an entire race or a Savanna baboon alpha male being challenged by a headstrong youth for dictatorship of the tribe; the need to be the one who calls the shots will always remain an instinctual thought hardwired in our brain. To some this comparison may seem off based and farfetched in regards to similarity, however looking at Sapolsky’s research, the dominance in the animal kingdom can get rather similar. In a quote from his book A Primate’s Memoirs, Robert states, “Solomon entered the fight, ably taking on both while they were preoccupied and exhausted. Result: number 203 dead, Aaron badly injured, Solomon settling in to his reign” (Pg 22-23). The clichéd quote of “all is fair in love and war” could not sum up this act of social dominance any better. Solomon, who was number 3 in the chain of command, waited on the arduous fight of the two contenders to wage on...
The song presents to the listener a new ear to listen from. This ear is intuitive and can hear the sounds of nature.
"They're not really people." Nazi officer, Ralph, says referring to the Jewish people in both the film and book version of "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas". Although, this is just one of the quotes that appears n both versions of the story. This Holocaust book written by John Boyne shares similarities and differences with the film version of the same story line. Comparing and contrasting both versions will help the reader to recognize changes in one version and what was left out of one version. To understand the similarities and differences of "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" film version versus the book version, it is necessary to take a closer look at the characters, the word choice, and the important details.

The first argument that Singer makes is for extending the principle of equality beyond our own species. Thus meaning, we should treat nonhuman (animals) with equal consideration because nonhuman have the same capacity for suffering as due humans. This is true due to the fact that nonhumans are capable
The epic poem, Enuma Elish and the film, The Lion King are two amazing stories. The epic poem leans heavily on the mythical perspective that explores the drama of Apsu and Tiamat as well as the primordial gods. In the Enuma Elish, Apsu is ousted by the help of Tiamat, and later Tiamat turns against the gods that she helped to kill Apsu. In the end, a hero emerges; the divine god of flame and lightning that zaps and executes Tiamat and divide her body. On the other side, The Lion King dramatizes rituals that involve circulation of life and responsibility from one generation to the other. The Lion King strives to explain the journey that circulates from birth to death to rebirth. In this epic musical film, it explores Simba’s life after the
A very well-known Disney character in history is Scar. Scar is the main antagonist for the film The Lion King, leading him to be the “villain” of the movie. I have diagnosed him with Antisocial Personality Disorder because he is angry, arrogant, manipulative, and is disregarding to others’ safety when it comes to getting what he wants. Someone with Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD) typically shows “lower emotional intelligence” (book, pg 563) which leads to manipulating others and they are often criminals who go off of impulse, leading to terrible consequences like death. A person with APD doesn’t have conscientiousness towards anybody, including family (book 563), which leads me to diagnose Scar as someone with APD because he killed his own brother with no remorse, he manipulated 3 hyenas for his own benefits, and he was arrogant about his intelligence while making himself seem like he was worthy of being king of Pride Rock.

It tells the meaning and the significance of the what the story is happening and what the character are doing. It also enhance drama, when Scar kills Mufasa. And the scene comes with a lot of sadness which means that the father is dead and the son feels that it was all of his fault. It also establish character. It shows when Simba left the pride land, because of his father’s death, and got saved by Pumbaa and Timon, it showed his matured and adulthood that he would be the next pride land king. It also gives and psychological insight showing what would an animal do if it got away of his home town and what made the lion a king. It also show the intensity of drama when Simba and Scar were fighting because Scar killed Simba’s father. It also gave the film continuity when at the end of the film came out the heir of the pride
