Changin Changing Criterion Design Essay

Changing criterion design is an excellent method to use for anyone who is looking to develop an intervention for a target behavior in a gradual fashion using a stepwise method. The design starts with an initial baseline and an intervention, just as most design model. Once the previous intervention becomes stable, it is used as a baseline for the next phase intervention plan (Gast and Ledford (2014).
Just with any design internal and external validity must be evaluated. To validate experimental control when using changing criterion design, when the criterion level change, there must be an association to the variable and it must be demonstrated by a natural occurrence. The data used in the previous phase must be stable prior to moving the next phase and can return back to previous criterion to show full experimental control. …show more content…

Some of the advantages include the ability to target only one behavior, unlike the multiple baseline and multiple probe designs (Gast and Ledford (2014). In addition changing criterion can be used to evaluate an increase or decrease in certain behaviors. Changing criterion has been used to monitor desensitization, fading out prompts and self-monitoring (Gast and Ledford (2014). Lastly, changing criterion allows participants to use small steps in each phase to change behavior without any additional stress on the participant.
Although changing criterion has many advantages over many designs, it also have limitations which include it is limited to a small array of behaviors and instructional, therefore the person who is running the research has the responsibility to make sure the criterion change is large enough to be observable, but small enough to be achievable (Gast and Ledford (2014). In addition a display of experimental control depends on how well the participant is willing to play a part in the
