They are in pockets, purses and hands; however, are the social repercussions of cell phones understood? Dependence on the cell phone caused a tremendous change in the social sciences, natural sciences, and humanities. Anthropologically modern society has changed how we communicate; that change continues as technology advances. Psychologically, our view of “self” and our view of the world is shrinking and expanding. Changes are affecting linguistics and education. Cell phones are a convenient form of communication; people began to communicate on the go. Intrapersonal communication, also known as internal dialogue is being displaced to a screen as well. Thoughts are being redirected to social media for attention; losing a sense of self. Internal dialogue is being edited and shared. Society is thinking in tweets and posts rather than reflecting and growing. This new philosophy prizes popularity over anonymity. Privacy once highly prized and protected is being stripped away. Personal “self” or allusion of self-worth is being manipulated by the amount of virtual friends, likes and shares. Inner thoughts and opinion are being used to perpetuate this faulty system. The impact on the individual’s psyche will be worse as past thoughts and opinions forever follow people. The economic market will steer technology, creating further convenience driven products. Dreams are lost; dreams of what has yet to be thought of; dreams that come from vibrant conversation, and non-verbal communication of emotions that are lacking in this digital age. Growth will be hindered in numerous ways since we are limiting ourselves to devices instead of people. Despite the lost art of dreaming if used usefully cell phones could create a world to share dreams, ideas and inspire. Instead of texting friends in class, students could use their phones to access true knowledge. Cell phones have opened the world to us.
