The California Community Colleges (CCC) system is composed of 108 colleges organized into 72 districts that serve more than 1.4 million students statewide. Under the direction of the CCC Board of Governors, the Chancellor’s Office provides statewide guidance and leadership to the community colleges. In addition, the voters in each district elect a board of trustees charged with developing local policies that govern the day-to-day operations at the district’s colleges, including overseeing the compensation of teaching faculty and other employees. For the fall 1999 semester, the districts reported to the Chancellor’s Office a total population of 41,754 teaching faculty, of which 28,180 (67 percent) were classified as part-time and 13,574 (33 percent) as full-time (Jacoby 2006).
My experience at Ventura College meets all of what Hacker and Dreifus set as good college traits. Ventura college tuition rates seem to be very reasonable and also affordable to most people, most people don’t have to worry about being stuck with a debt that they have to pay after they graduate. Teacher’s quality at Ventura College is great, most teachers know how to teach and how to interact with students. The student teacher ratio is low with comparison to other big colleges. Most of Ventura College’s money is spent on students related activities, there isn’t a fancy cafeteria or a huge gym. My experience at Ventura College exceed the price I pay to attend it.

Historic Homes ClaremontAre you planning a move to the Los Angeles area? Take a close look at new homes in Claremont. Just 35 miles east of downtown L.A. in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, Claremont makes frequent appearances on many “best places to live in America” lists. It offers great year-round weather, a low crime rate, a thriving economy, an educated populace, along with a vibrant cultural scene and recreational opportunities that contribute to an enviable quality of life. Nicknamed the City of Trees and PhDs, Claremont has a rich history and a bright future. Originally home to native Serrano Indians, Claremont was home to Mission San Gabriel, one of the chain of Franciscan missions established during California’s Spanish period. In 1834, what is today modern Claremont became part Rancho San Jose, of a large land grant from the Mexican government. The arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad in early 1887 led to the creation of the city of Claremont, one of 30 town sites between San Bernardino and Los Angeles built in anticipation of a population boom fueled by the railroad. The boom fizzled, but Claremont survived, thanks largely to the presence of Pomona College, founded 1888 as a New England-style school of higher learner. Over the years, Claremont evolved into a thriving college town famous for its consortium of seven acclaimed colleges. Up until the end of World War II, the area also was part of southern California’s flourishing citrus industry.

Imagine the amount of support that Saint Louis University would get with the addition of a football program within the near future. With the loss of the Saint Louis Rams, the community would welcome a home football team of any kind with a vigor. As the Edward Jones dome is now teamless, now is the opportune time to begin the formation of a football program at SLU, using the dome as a home field for the team.

A Way for a University to be victorious, like Iowa State University, is to set several well planned goals that not only support it’s students but also there staff and alumni. Like the Strategic Plan here on campus is to “provide a high quality student life that engages students to learn, grow, and succeed as global citizens and involved alumni.” A certain place on campus that has been doing this is the Iowa State University Memorial Union. This practical and historic landmark on campus was one of the first building built here at Iowa State University. The “MU” as it may be named calls to not only to hold ISU’s plan but it also squires goals on its own, like “nurture common ground, enrich and sustain individuals lives, and remember.”
