1.0 INTRODUCTION
On 8th March 2014, MH370 a B777-200 aircraft departed from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing at 12.41am carrying 239 on board including passengers, 2 infants and flight crews was declared to be missing by Malaysian Airlines (MAS). The flight was supposed to arrive in Beijing at 6.30am on the same day however; the Subang Air Traffic Control reported a loss of contact with the aircraft at 2.40am as stated by MAS. It is till this day the disappearance of flight MH370 remains as one of aviation’s biggest unsolved mysteries with numerous unproven theories.
As the ill-fated flight MH370 is still missing, these unproven theories are increasing by the day therefore; there is much need to evaluate the author’s reasoning when reading articles about the missing flight MH370. A series of questions can be asked to determine the validity of the author’s claims and if it is of sound reasoning. Additionally, pertaining to important issues, the evaluation process of the writer’s reasoning needs to be approached in a systematic and skilful manner.
The first question to ask is if the reasons stated are acceptable in terms of being true, valid, factual, etc. as recently, Malaysia has dropped in the Trafficking in Persons (TiP) 2014 report to Tier 3 which is the lowest ranking due to having identified 650 human trafficking victims last year but only nine traffickers were caught and convicted; surely this justifies the drop in ranking.
The second question to ask is if the reasoning supports the conclusion made. For example, it was concluded that traffic jams were exceptionally heavy on the first day of Ramadan; this was caused by people rushing back to their hometown for their first “sahur” and “buka puasa” meals with their loved ones.
