I thought that Diane Guerrero who is an American actress speech about her family’s deportation was interesting. She recently appeared on an immigration themed of Chelsea handler’s talk show. Guerrero is the citizen daughter of immigrant parents. Guerrero mentioned how her family was taken away from her when she was just 14 years old. “Not a single person at any level of government took any note of me. No one checked to see if i had a place to live or food to eat, and at 14, i found myself basically on my own”, Guerrero added. Luckily, Guerrero had good friends to help her. She told handler how her family try to become legal but there were no sign or help. Her parents lost their money to scammers who they believed to be a lawyer. When her family’s
Family is one of those words that have a significant meaning to various individuals. Family may be viewed one way to an individual and another way to someone else. Family consists of those who have played a particular role in one’s life, whether it is positive or negative. In this paper, I will assess Reymundo’s family both nuclear and extended and speak of how his family has become significant in his life and how they have played a role in his decisions. I will also speak of my personal reactions to the story as well as address ways that as a social worker I could work to impact the gang problems in Orlando.

If you know any broken or disorganized families, you may realized that a broken family usually faced many difficulties, such as financial problem, missing family members, and they tend to be unhappy comparing to others. After reviewing the Sanchez Family case study, I have chosen to review Emilia Sanchez with Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial development, Operant Conditioning, and Social Learning Theory. In her case study, Emilia is described as being the oldest daughter in the Sanchez family, she helped her mother a great deal with housework and with helping care for the younger children and was a good quiet child who never gave her parents any problem, however at the age of 14, things changed, and she got involved in drugs. Now at 28, she has lost custody of her son due to her problems with drugs, and she is estranged from her parents due to having an abortion shortly after her son was born because her parents have very strong religious beliefs and they
According to the case study, the family is living in a three-bedroom mobile home that houses three adults, 2 children, and newborn on the way home. Multi-generational living is common within the Hispanic community, this is a cultural practice widely accepted and embraced (Fry & Pasal, 2014). It is important for the assessor to both understand and take into consideration this cultural factor and aid them in obtaining better coping skill (especially Jamie) in their tight living quarters. Nurses involved in the case should enlist the help of social workers in order to investigate the quarters in which the children are living. Ensuring the safety of the existing children in the residence is paramount. Also modifications that may be needed to be made in regards to the needs of the incoming coming child should be evaluated. Asking direct and pertinent questions regarding safety in the home is of significant importance. Working in the emergency department we ask many questions regarding the patient’s home life including; a domestic violence questionnaire, fall related injuries reporting, and type and location of housing during our triage in order to gain insight as to the patient’s socioeconomic state. If flags are triggered during the assessment a social service consult is
Jose Antonio Vargas’s article on My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant is a writing about his childhood journey from the Philippines to the United States as an Undocumented Immigrant. Vargas writes this article to emphasize the topic of immigrant and undocumented immigrant in the United States. He uses all three appeals: pathos, ethos, and logic in his writing, in specific, he mostly uses pathos throughout of his entire article with a purpose for the reader to sympathize and to feel compassion for him. The use of these appeals attract many readers, they can feel and understand his purpose is to ask for others to join and support other people who undocumented immigrant like himself. In addition, it gives other undocumented immigrant people courage
Immigrants must overcome many barriers to succeed in America. First, migrants frequently must learn a new language. Inability to communicate is a critical barrier for accessing the health care system (Urrutia-Rojas, Marshall, Trevino, Lurie, & Minguia-Bayona, 2006). Second, the processes of work and schooling for themselves and their families can be daunting. Lastly, immigrants use the established social network of longer duration residents for reference and knowledge (Nandi, Galea, Lopez, Nandi, Strongarone, & Ompad, 2008). For purposes of this report, there are three different types of immigrant: legal, undocumented, and refugees or persons seeking asylum. All three types of residents want to succeed and achieve their personal dream.
As a social worker it is often complex to determine which theory to employ in practice, each client will warrant for an in-debt assessment of the presenting problem and goals the client desires to achieve. This paper will explore one family intervention model that can be applied to the Taylor family. The two theories analyzed are Cognitive Behavioral Family Theory, (CBFT) and Structural Family Theory (SFT); both theories can be utilized when assisting individuals or families. The social worker will focus on the Cognitive Behavioral Family Therapy model when applying treatment and interventions to the Taylor family case.
As a social worker I respect the decisions of the Sanchez family, after all they have the right to make their own choices when it comes to services. As suggested by Deci and Ryan (2012), all humans have a desire to be competent and have a sense of control over their situation. In this family, Mr. Sanchez is making most of the decisions and as a social worker it is important that I accept this because he knows what is best for his family. The members of the Sanchez family have goals they would like to achieve and as a social worker it is my job to guide them in achieving their goals while allowing them to be in total control of their
Sometimes Carlos thinks that she spoils them a lot and that that is not doing them any good. This situation sometimes creates conflict between them. Moreover, the relationship between Martha and Carlos is good. The Lopez family holds an open system. Which allows Carlos and Martha to resolve their differences with respect to parenting and marriage in a healthy way.
Hector Bowen grew up in a dysfunctional home with absolutely no love. His mother left him when he was only 5, he was left under the care of his alcoholic and abusive father. Hector never knew the honest meaning of love because he never received it himself. As a child he was constantly abused by his father, he would be locked in his room all day and saw school as a safe haven where he could stay for only a few hours everyday. Hector was never good at anything in his father's eyes and was viewed as the reason his mother left. He was truly hated by his own father. As growing up hector had no longer any trust in anybody, and because of his lack of trust he turned out to be the cold character that he is in The Night Circus, he tells Celia to not
The Cooper family consists of Susan (age 42), Matthew (age 41), Savannah (age 16) and Milton (age 9). The family dynamics interplay to create the crisis in this system. Savannah is in the process of developing an eating disorder and cutting as a means to deal with her intense emotions. The family’s value of perfectionism contributes to this development and creates chaos within all members of this system.
Luz's entire story I thought was significant. She is a lonely person who not willing to change her ways. She has a son and brother and wants nothing to do with either one of them. “Patterns are repeated behavioral or affective sequences” (Murphy p. 116). Luz’s has a disconnect from everyone in her life from her family, staff members and other clients at the retirement center. I don’t agree with Luz not speaking to her son because of whom he married, her son should be able to marry whomever he wants. You should not judge a person based on the color of their skin. Luz was racist which was the root of most of the problem. I would hope that Luz will change her mind and mend the relationship with her family. To find closer and happiness which everyone deserves.
