The Lopez family is going through a very distressful situation. There are 5 members in this family. The children are young adults and the parents are in middle age. It is a family with deeply rooted moral and religious values. “José” is a 22 year old young man, who recently was diagnosed HIV positive. He is close to his mother and brothers, but not to his father. He has an enthusiastic and friendly personality. Jose is the first born out of three to his parents. His father, “Carlos” 50 year old is a hardworking man with temperamental personality; especially when it comes to his sons. Although he is a good father; he is really strict with his children. He expects them to be better than him. He works in a factory as a supervisor. He and his wife To do this I will use Systems Perspective. This perspective “Sees human behavior as the outcome of reciprocal interactions of persons operating within linked systems” (Hutchinson, 2011 pg.38). According to this perspective, it seems like every member of the family knows what their role is. Carlos takes seriously its role as “the man of the house”. Which sometimes stresses him a little bit; since he feels that he does not provide enough because sometimes they have money problems. Therefore he feels that his role as the man of the house is not being fulfill. Is common that in most Hispanic families the man is the one that has to provide for everything; other ways he is not a “macho”. Martha, who also works to help Carlos; is the loving wife and mother who tries to keep the family together. She is kind of permissive with her sons. She believes that since they are males they can do wherever they want. Also she considers that is okay for them to go out and enjoy their lives as long as they are responsible with work and keep on going to school. She is especially over permissive with Jose. Sometimes Carlos thinks that she spoils them a lot and that that is not doing them any good. This situation sometimes creates conflict between them. Moreover the relationship between Martha and Carlos is good. The Lopez family holds an open system. Which allows Carlos and The success or failure of this process will depend on personal and/or social resources that the person/family possess. Due to Jose does not feel ready yet to disclose his HIV status to the rest of his family is causing Martha to take all the emotional and economic burden of this situation. Which is causing that the relationship between her, Carlos and his sons deteriorates. Also she feels depressed and isolated from the rest of the family. Unlike Papi, Juana did not put much emphasis on education for her kids; she would often pull out both Betty and Leonardo out of school to visit Mexico and as a results of their poor education, both Betty and Leonardo hardly spoke a word of English despite being an American born. Due to Mami’s unhealthy eating habits and parenting style, Betty grew up to be overweight and eventually becomes involved in gangs and ends up as a teenage mother.
Cleofilas, must endure the hard labor of her husband’s temper and if she doesn’t take on both gender roles for example: housework, caring for her children, and the outside duties of the home, she suffers the consequences of her husband and the beatings. Family is one of those words that have a significant meaning to various individuals. Family may be viewed one way to an individual and another way to someone else. Family consists of those who have played a particular role in one’s life, whether it is positive or negative. In this paper, I will assess Reymundo’s family both nuclear and extended and speak of how his family has become significant in his life and how they have played a role in his decisions. Junot Diaz's short story “Fiesta, 1980” gives an insight into the everyday life of a lower class family, a family with a troubled young boy, Yunior and a strong, abusive father, Papi. The conflict, man vs. man is one of the central themes of this story. This theme is portrayed through the conflicts between Papi and his son. Papi asserts his dominance in what can be considered unfashionable ways. Unconsciously, every action Papi makes yields negative reactions for his family. Yunior simply yearns for a tighter bond with his father, but knows-just like many other members of his family-Papi’s outlandish ways hurts him. As the story unfolds it becomes obvious that the conflicts between Papi and himself-along with conflicts between Yunior and himself-affect not only them as individuals, but their family as a whole.
Family is the most important social unit of Hispanic life. It is a close-knit entity that includes immediate and extended family members. Typically, the father is the head of the family and the mother rules the house (Clutter, n.d.). Vacations are usually taken to relatives’ houses to promote togetherness in celebration of birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, graduations, and communions. In times of need, the family is the first line of aid, and Hispanics typically live with their parents until marriage. While this deviates from American ideals for individuals aged 18-35, it actually provides young adults the opportunity for future success because so much money is saved from greatly reduced housing costs (Williams, 2009).

Mental illness and substance abuse are important co-morbidities” (Naswa, 2010). Naswa, 2010 also reports that adolescences with HIV have a higher susceptibility rate to contract STD’s that the average individual due to the thinner lining of mucus in the ovaries at this stage of their development. The stigma of living with HIV is also a factor for her psychosocial development. The fact that she contracted this disease from her father further contributes to emotional trauma.
From the moment scientists identified HIV and AIDS, social responses of fear, denial, stigma and discrimination have accompanied the epidemic. Discrimination has spread rapidly, fuelling anxiety and prejudice against the groups most affected, as well as those living with HIV or AIDS. It goes without saying that HIV and AIDS are as much about social phenomena as they are about biological and medical concerns. Across the world the global epidemic of HIV/AIDS has shown itself capable of triggering responses of compassion, solidarity and support, bringing out the best in people, their families and communities. But the disease is also associated with stigma, repression and discrimination, as individuals affected (or believed to be affected) by HIV have been rejected by their families, their loved ones and their communities. This rejection holds as true in the rich countries of the north as it does in the poorer countries of the south.
