What is the main purpose of this theory?
Carl Rogers was a very profound humanistic psychologist. He tested the abilities and mindsets that mankind has and basically restated and defined who we are and most importantly that our environment is what shapes our mentality. His theory was based on the Self-actualization Theory; meaning that what he believed in and the fundamentals of his theory supported that in order for each person to reach fulfillment in life, they have to be able to come to terms with their real self and with the person that they want to be.

Rogers believed that a person that is completely aware of themselves, their surroundings, and their goals and desires; is a person that would be considered to be fully functioning. In Rogers’s theory, it seemed like he considered a fully functioning person as almost a piece of perfection. That person would be someone that has the ability to be open to all types of things, creative, trusting and trustworthy, and overall a well-rounded individual. I believe this is a key concept to understanding this theory because it helps to lay the foundation of his theory as whole. The reason I believe this is an assumption is due to the fact that humans are not the same. Some may want to reach their full potential, but others might feel as though they have already reached their full potential and have no need to improve or grow. While on the other hand, there are some that do not believe that they will ever reach their full potential due to their lack of self-worth and value in themselves. That is one assumption that I believe is underlying the authors thinking. It is difficult to assume that all humans truly have this one desire when not every person is alike. And for Rogers to support his entire theory on the belief of self-actualization is a daring step, and at the same time I do believe it helped to bring forth a lot of issues and beliefs that humans tend to keep within
Stephen M. Schuller and Acacia C. Parks research shows that circumstantial factors do not adequately explain different level of happiness. Positive reactions will contribute to everyone’s happiness just as well as negative reactions do. I agree with Schuller and Parks when it comes down to where your happiness comes from. Again, I believe Taylor is missing some important feature to his theory. It seems he is correct in stating one should have their own sense of meaning to their life not just others’ perception that one’s life is meaningful. However, there is still the problem of giving equal meaning to everyone life that is doing what they love to do. As a result, to answer this problem one could suggest in order for one to have a meaningful life a person must be subjectively fulfilled by pursuing objectively valuable ends. This way it ensures the person must find meaning in their own lives as well as creating something that benefits many that will give others the perception the person has a meaningful life.

Another similarity between Carl Roger and Jean Piaget would that be an individual is in control of their own learning. If an individual wants to learn it is their responsibility to do the work and participate in their own learning process. Carl Rogers and Jean Piaget both believed that the environment played an important role in learning. Carl Rogers believed that in order to learn the environment should be a safe non-threatnening environment. Jean Piaget believed that the environment was important in adaption of a person, meaning a person would adapt to the environment around them. Jean Piaget was a strong believer in adaptation. As the field of counseling continues to progress numerous theoretical orientations have been developed. One theoretical approach to counseling has been coined as person centered counseling or client centered therapy. This type of approach is commonly referred to as Rogerian psychotherapy. Rogerian therapy focuses on the empowerment of individuals with the inner self. Two of the most prolific theories on the formation of personality were developed by neurologist Sigmund Freud and psychologist Carl Rogers. Both Freud and Rogers worked in psychotherapy, the area of therapy, which “…focuses on fostering a positive mental well-being…” (CITE). These men based their general theories of personality on their experiences with patients, however their conclusions are worlds apart. In concluding, Abraham Maslow’s self-actualization focused on what motivates and desires humans to reach their potential. He may have thought finding self-actualization was nearly impossible, but everyone can find their own potential inside of them because everyone was created equal. They just need to find out who they really are and accept who they are to find their potential. For some people it may come easy to find their potential and fulfillment in life, but for others they might need to hit rock bottom to figure out what they are really made of.
When thinking about my personality in regard to different personality theories, I felt that I could most relate to the humanistic theory. Carl Rogers described self-concept as a collection of beliefs about one's own nature, unique qualities and typical behavior. My self-concept is that I'm an easy-going, nice guy. If something happens that upsets me, I am pretty laid back about it and deal with it gradually. I like the fact that I'm easy going, and I don't want to suddenly start showing a temper or overreacting about things that I know I can get past calmly. Carl Jung was a great, yet, controversial psychological theorist of the twentieth century. Originally, he worked side by side with his role model, Sigmund Freud. Subsequently, the two faced many theoretical clashes and parted to conduct their own research. Mainly, Carl Jung remains famous for his research and discoveries on the collective unconscious, that consists of archetypes absorbed through dreams, myths and symbols.
According to Shebib, 2014, “he believed in the importance of seeing each other as “becoming” and created a belief in the capacity of people to change”. He believed his clients are not bound by their past and that clients must be seen for their potential, their strengths, inner power and their capacity to change (Shebib, 2014). Rogers had his own methods, and they were based on the premise that if the right or core conditions are present, then change is possible. He also said that core conditions act to speed the natural process of heeling or recovery from psychological pain or problem (Shebib, 2014). When a councilor displays these core conditions, the potential for change and a positive relationship with clients increase. The three core conditions Rogers had been unconditional positive regard, empathy and genuineness (Shebib, 2014). This theory also proposed that the therapeutic relationship is the guidance in counselling (Stulmaker & Ray, 2015). Person centered theory offers a new way of looking at a person and their development, as well as how someone can be assisted in their change. Is the person receives it they gain unconditional senesce of worth. If positive regard is not gained an individual would be incapable of self-actualization as they do not know what they need.
