This paper is about a job I thought was interesting, agricultural engineer. There are many things that interest me with this job are: working with farmers, brainstorming new machinery, and getting to work with technology. There are many things that ag engineers have done and much more they can do; however, becoming an agricultural engineer takes many strenuous courses to get the proper degree.

There wouldn’t be enough food in the world if farmers still planted with animals. If you google tractor brands, I am sure you will find Massey Ferguson. That company started in 1911 when Massey Ferguson created the very first modern type tractor that started the progress of farming. With his creation it was efficient enough to plant more seeds faster. This tractor was called the “F” model tractor and does look similar to tractors today. One of the most helpful and genius ideas of their time was the McCormick Reaper. You may not know what that is; you may also think that is a formidable name. The McCormick reaper was the combine of the 1830’s. Being one of the biggest helps because picking corn by hand? I think that would be a nightmare to any farmer in the world! For thousands of years, farming has been around and is considered an essential part of life despite its hardships. Throughout my entire life, I have been a part of the farming subculture even though, I have never farmed myself, my entire family does. My father and his five siblings grew up on a farm and now farm with a friend. Farmers have both ascribed and achieved statuses, meaning that they are born into being a farmer but they still must work and meet that status. Agriculture farmers have a different pattern of behavior and way of life that is substantial enough to distinguish them from the overall culture.
I used to naïvely believe that agriscience education was important to the betterment of society, but now I know that it is absolutely essential. I now know that it is imperative for young people to know the skills that I plainly took for granted and just thought that it was common knowledge due to my background on a farm. My favorite quote is by Joe Martin and although it focuses on The National FFA Organization, I believe that it perfectly encompasses the industry as a whole. It reads, “The organization has grown to be more than cows, sows and plows; the modern FFA is about beakers, speakers and job seekers.” Through this quote, we see how far agriculture has come since the turn of the century, which means that agriscience education has had to come just as far. Agricultural Education was established on the three-circle model that includes classroom/laboratory, Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE), and FFA (formerly Future Farmers and America). The definition for Agricultural Education that I believe is well rounded is, “the scientific study of the principles and methods of teaching and learning as they pertain to agriculture” (Barricks, 1988, pg. 5). When I think of Agricultural Education, I typically think about the different disciplines that it impacts, but I believe the definition that Barricks provides gives a solid definition just for Agricultural Education as a whole. To me, the definition of Agricultural Education can be altered depending on where it is being used. My earliest exposure to economics came from my dad, a logistics manager. The interesting stories he told me from his work stimulated my youthful sense of curiosity and passion on economics. At the same time, I observed the antiquated and ineffective technology they use to make decisions and hoped that one day I could be able to tackle the problems. The first Agricultural Economics class I took at Purdue was Microeconomics for Food and Agribusiness, by Dr. Frank Dooley. His heuristic teaching style and the fabulous content brought me to the world of agricultural economics. I found that enormous principles in life can be explained through these basic economics concepts, such as the diminishing utility and opportunity cost. Agricultural economics has truly broadened my horizon. Applied Econometrics, by Dr. James Eales, quickly heightened my interest due to the combination of math; statistics with economics were used to prove theories, in which I found stronger and great sense to me. My attentiveness of math reflected by taking part in Mathematical Olympiad classes with high scores for six years acted as a stepping stone for econometrics study. Therefore, I doubled major in Applied Agricultural Economics, which means I must double my efforts to study than others. And I did with great grades on all the Agricultural Economics courses, and with a minor in Food and Agribusiness Management. I appreciate my horticultural background as a great support for my research in Agricultural Economics since I know the crops’ biological features and production cycles intimately.
All college students should partake in career exploration project because it gives structure and direction. The result from an assessment identifies and prioritizes which careers will best suit an individual person or student. It does not necessarily mean they have to pick that particular job or career; it gives them more chooses to choose from. Career exploration is a life long journey that is emotionally, physically and mentally stress full. I say lifelong because as time goes on so does an individual’s views, abilities and skills. Career exploration is very helpful to a career, because it improves a person's ability to become informed of their interests, skills, values, abilities, aptitudes, weaknesses and strengths It helps in the guidance of career matters across the nation, job influence, growth, work hours opportunities to name a few.
