Career Research Essay

This paper is about a job I thought was interesting, agricultural engineer. There are many things that interest me with this job are: working with farmers, brainstorming new machinery, and getting to work with technology. There are many things that ag engineers have done and much more they can do; however, becoming an agricultural engineer takes many strenuous courses to get the proper degree.

Tractor, the first tractor was invented in 1892 by John Froelich. Even though that was created you could get very little done. If we were still farming with ox and plows, where would we be? Over seven billion people count on farmers for food.
There wouldn’t be enough food in the world if farmers still planted with animals. If you google tractor brands, I am sure you will find Massey Ferguson. That company started in 1911 when Massey Ferguson created the very first modern type tractor that started the progress of farming. With his creation it was efficient enough to plant more seeds faster. This tractor was called the “F” model tractor and does look similar to tractors today. One of the most helpful and genius ideas of their time was the McCormick Reaper. You may not know what that is; you may also think that is a formidable name. The McCormick reaper was the combine of the 1830’s. Being one of the biggest helps because picking corn by hand? I think that would be a nightmare to any farmer in the world! There is no way to describe the tempo change in farming. What a relief it must have been if you had one of the first ones! What could run such a machine? After this engine was created, it was like a race to see if someone could invent more tractors to use this engine. Who knew what the possibilities were? By 1952 the biggest invention of all happened; not just for agriculture but for everyone. The gasoline engine was invented. Tractors could now run more efficiently and had the power to work more ground faster! This was the engine that people still can use today! It may not be shown in agriculture as much but trucks to get people places use gasoline engines. It requires very smart thinking and many strenuous courses in order to get the proper degree. First of all, you need a bachelor's degree in agricultural science. If you are thinking about this career you should try to major in either engineering or agriculture. Majoring in one of these two categories will give you a head start when looking for an opening. Choosing the proper college is a good idea. Since I live in Iowa, colleges near me that would be good are either ISU or SDSU. Being an agricultural engineer has many benefits. One of them being is there are factories everywhere. You wouldn’t have to travel very far to get to one. Like before, you should be good at engineering or knowledgeable at
agriculture. If you are thinking about this job, you probably want to know what you may have to do. There are several things you could do as an agricultural engineer. You can do things such as: study fields, communicate with farmers, study issues with machinery, study issues with fields, and work on creating machinery; however, being and ag engineer, you need to work hard ours if you have to figure something out. Usually, companies want their things error proof. Trying to figure things out is top priority and usually takes long hours, but, with long hours comes good payment. Jobs like this usually range from seventy five thousand to one-hundred ten thousand dollars per year. Benefits include; paid vacations, health insurance, and pension plans. Why I am writing about this career, is because #1 I would like to inform you about this job. #2 I think this job fits my personality and is interesting to me. I feel this job fits me because you have to think about things and how they go together. I grew up on a farm so I would like to learn more about agriculture and the machinery they would use. I am not very costly but I do like some hobbies that require a little money. So a job you get a good pay, yet still get to learn about what you would like to do. That sounds like a good job to me. America needs engineers to feed to world. If you have no machinery to plant it, how will it all get done? The world needs more and more people working as we need more and more efficient tractors and other machinery. You could be the very next person to help feed the world. Slightly less than 2 percent of the total U.S. Population ("Goodman"). This means that a lot of U.S farmers work at factories. This informational piece starts in the Middle Ages and goes all the way to farming today. Farming has changed a lot over time.
For thousands of years, farming has been around and is considered an essential part of life despite its hardships. Throughout my entire life, I have been a part of the farming subculture even though, I have never farmed myself, my entire family does. My father and his five siblings grew up on a farm and now farm with a friend. Farmers have both ascribed and achieved statuses, meaning that they are born into being a farmer but they still must work and meet that status. Agriculture farmers have a different pattern of behavior and way of life that is substantial enough to distinguish them from the overall culture.
My earliest exposure to economics came from my dad, a logistics manager. The interesting stories he told me from his work stimulated my youthful sense of curiosity and passion on economics. At the same time, I observed the antiquated and ineffective technology they use to make decisions and hoped that one day I could be able to tackle the problems. The first Agricultural Economics class I took at Purdue was Microeconomics for Food and Agribusiness, by Dr. Frank Dooley. His heuristic teaching style and the fabulous content brought me to the world of agricultural economics. I found that enormous principles in life can be explained through these basic economics concepts, such as the diminishing utility and opportunity cost. Agricultural economics has truly broadened my horizon. Applied Econometrics, by Dr. James Eales, quickly heightened my interest due to the combination of math; statistics with economics were used to prove theories, in which I found stronger and great sense to me. My attentiveness of math reflected by taking part in Mathematical Olympiad classes with high scores for six years acted as a stepping stone for econometrics study. Therefore, I doubled major in Applied Agricultural Economics, which means I must double my efforts to study than others. And I did with great grades on all the Agricultural Economics courses, and with a minor in Food and Agribusiness Management. I appreciate my horticultural background as a great support for my research in Agricultural Economics since I know the crops’ biological features and production cycles intimately.
Agricultural Education was established on the three-circle model that includes classroom/laboratory, Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE), and FFA (formerly Future Farmers and America). Agricultural education allows students to learn about agricultural practices in the classroom and then apply those practices to their supervised agricultural experience (SAE) and FFA (Georgia Agricultural Education, 2011). Through this type of learning students gain hands-on experience in the industry and are able to learn more about agriculture. The definition for Agricultural Education that I believe is well rounded is, “the scientific study of the principles and methods of teaching and learning as they pertain to agriculture” (Barricks, 1988, pg. 5). When I think of Agricultural Education, I typically think about the different disciplines that it impacts, but I believe the definition that Barricks provides gives a solid definition just for Agricultural Education as a whole. To me, the definition of Agricultural Education can be altered depending on where it is being used. For example, what is taught and how it is taught varies depending on if agriculture is being taught in the classroom setting, public setting, age group, and topic discussed. All college students should partake in career exploration project because it gives structure and direction. The result from an assessment identifies and prioritizes which careers will best suit an individual person or student. It does not necessarily mean they have to pick that particular job or career; it gives them more chooses to choose from. Career exploration is a life long journey that is emotionally, physically and mentally stress full. I say lifelong because as time goes on so does an individual’s views, abilities and skills. Every time a person goes to the store and buys some food that food was grown by a farmer or contain ingredients from the farmer’s crops. A farmer is a good job because the work they do helps to provide the world with food. Without farmers many people would go hungry not knowing how to grow their own food. Without farmers many other products other than food would be gone. Farmers work hard long days and often go unnoticed; however, without them life would be much different.
In the last one hundred years or more, mankind has been making huge and extreme technological advances.
