Agricultural Education was established on the three-circle model that includes classroom/laboratory, Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE), and FFA (formerly Future Farmers and America). Agricultural education allows students to learn about agricultural practices in the classroom and then apply those practices to their supervised agricultural experience (SAE) and FFA (Georgia Agricultural Education, 2011). Through this type of learning students gain hands-on experience in the industry and are able to learn more about agriculture. Today’s science standards require real world scenarios and questions that force students to be able to apply their learning (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2014). The United States Department of Education has implemented programs to meet the growing demand of students to be prepared to enter professions with real world experience. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, also referred to as STEM, focuses on developing standards in leadership while educating students in those corresponding subject areas. The veterinary science field is one scientific area where higher standards must be met. According to Texas A&M, one of the oldest and most prestigious veterinary science programs in the United States, “Becoming a veterinarian requires dedication and diligent study. The veterinary medical student must meet high standards of ethics and academic performance (par.1)” (Texas A&M University, 2013).
One teaching strategy in agricultural education is Problem Based Learning (PBL). PBL is an effective and enjoyable way to learn -- and develop deeper learning competencies required for success in college, career and civic life. A study conducted by B.A. Talbert, PhD. concluded that FFA members who were more involved and participating in agriculture classes did so because the classes were interesting, challenging, exciting and open for discussion (Talbert). The Future Farmers of America is an agricultural education group, but reaches much further than agriculture. The FFA remains committed to the individual student, providing a path to achievement in premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education (FFA). According to the National FFA Organization, “FFA members embrace concepts taught in agricultural science classrooms nationwide, build valuable skills through hands-on experiential learning and each year demonstrate their proficiency in competitions based on real-world agricultural skills”(“Statistics”). I am a biology and chemistry major at Harford Community College and am working to obtain an associate of science degree in biology and chemistry- calculus based physics from HCC. My plan is to transfer to the University of Maryland and study Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine with the goal of entering Veterinary School. I have been working towards veterinary school since I was fourteen years old. My passion for the subject began while I was working at Olney Farm, a horse farm in Fallston, MD. I began horseback riding at ten-years old and started volunteering at the farm within five months of my first lesson. I was homeschooled; therefore, I could get to the barn before all the other children got out of school. I learned how to retrieve the horses from their fields, groom them, and get them ready for the lessons for that day. Eventually, I performed these tasks for eight lessons a week. I enjoyed observing the various behaviors of the horses, administering special diets to specific horses, treating their surface wounds, and carrying out general tasks to maintain the horses’ health. This is when my desire for veterinary medicine began.

For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners.
STEM is significant to our society, we need jobs not only to compete globally, but to also fix the important problems of the world. Technology is pervasive in almost every aspect of daily life, and as the workplace changes, STEM knowledge and skills grow in importance for a variety of workers (not just for mathematicians and scientists) (Traurig par. 6). If corporations increase female participation in the future, not only will it increase more genders and diversity to work in the corporation, but it will also help solve the important problems of the world because of all the minds that are working together. Many people have lost their pets and close family members because there is no way to get the help or medical attention that the animal so desperately needed. Every day in the United States, veterinarians are working hard to save animal’s lives. People will always continue to want and to breed pets. Therefore, to help and cure all these pets, a steady stream of veterinarians will be needed for many years to come. Over the years, the requirements and processes to becoming a veterinarian have changed. To become a successful veterinarian one must complete all necessary education and on the job training, be friendly and love animals, and have a burning passion to help both the pet and the pet owner.
Through my experiences, I have learned the reality of veterinary medicine. It is not about playing with puppies and kittens. My clients might not appreciate me, my patients might be difficult, I may get frustrated, and I might not make much money. Yet veterinary medicine is about more than that. It is a career with purpose, a lifelong source of challenge, personal growth, fulfilled academic curiosity, and opportunities to impact lives, both human and animal. This class has opened my mind to the incredible impact that STEM Education can have on our society. I do not work in an institution that has a STEM program. I work at a preschool; this makes my practice of any type of STEM program extremely limited. However, it is a private school. All my students come from households where one or both of their parents are professionals. These professionals want their children to be academically prepared for school. This means we must academically, mentally, and emotionally prepare them for their future schooling. I teach my students how to be a functioning participant in a classroom while exploring mathematics, science, art, history, literature and pre-writing.
