In Canada, volunteer work is definitely a significant part of our value system. Many employers look highly upon potential employees who have a strong repertoire of volunteer work, especially if it pertains to their field of employment. This volunteer work is often also done alongside either schooling or other paid employment, which shows that the employee has gone above and beyond to do their part. The values of Canadian society have certainly been passed down through family and community, just as Hofstede’s value system states. We are able to observe where Canada stands on all five (although the page includes a six) of these main values through the chart listed on the Country Comparison page on the Hofstede Insights website. There are clearly some that play into why Canada values volunteer work so …show more content…
For example, someone from the middle class volunteering their time at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter to help a group of people who have been given a hard path in life at that given time and through the help that that volunteer is giving, maybe the several underprivileged individuals will be able to rise above the poverty line. That is the ideology of that volunteer, to give their time and both make others feel better and make themselves feel better about themselves. Another value that pertains to why volunteer work is so important is Individualism. This is because of what was discussed earlier, with the employer looking so highly on extra work done by potential employees. If they have a significant amount of volunteer work on their resumé, it will make them stand out from others because they have accomplished more than the other employees and it shows a caring side to that employee. The last value that clearly pertains to volunteerism is the cultural value of
But she wonders if there is something else other than the spirit of citizenship that could hold the Canadians together. Are there values commonly shared by the Canadians? Chong has found out solution for these questions, and she states, “What sets Canadian society apart from others is that ours is an inclusive society” (Chong, 2015. P. 8). Canadian immigration laws are forward-looking than many other countries, because the Canadian immigrants and the naturalized citizens enjoy status. Canadians understand the importance of “Unity in Diversity”. The inclusiveness is the bridge that connects the Canadians, and this bridge is tempered with the values like tolerance, fairness, understanding and
The social value that is most central to me is service. Service should be incorporated to policy, by the application of education and knowledge through serving the community at hand.
Through his motivation to find love, Romeo, a dynamic character, changes from a subdued individual, into a jovial lovesick character. In the early sections of the play, Romeo is in love with a woman named Rosaline who does not reciprocate those feelings. This leads him to drone on about, “sad hours “ (I.i.146) and how he would, “rather weep” (I.i.167) because he is, “out of her favour” (I.i.154). The importance of Romeo’s affection for each of his women is essential to address. The feelings that Romeo possesses inevitably leads him to become sorrowful over rejection but then, optimistic for Juliet. Later on in the play, once Romeo meets Juliet, he is quick to forget the love that he had for Rosaline and the grieving that he had underwent. After meeting her at Capulet’s ball Romeo states that she is, “my
One of the core values of Canada is diversity. Canada has very diverse cultures that have
An American comedian once joked, “It’s easy to forget about little tiny Canada, all tucked away down there.” Obviously, this person knows little about Canada. Why is it important for peoples of other nations to learn about Canada? How does Canada attempt to impact world affairs? Discuss these questions in detail, using at least three specific examples
The recent Olympic Winter Games has brought out the true spirit of Canada in us all. Never has the nation seen such displays of en-masse patriotism as we rallied together in support of our athletes. This is the true spirit of Canada, often tucked behind a blank facade, invisible to the world. As Canadians toil silently in support of the world, we remind ourselves that the greater good is good for us as well. Canada’s strong foreign aid policy is just an example of how we truly are a good neighbour.
Kim, in the United States, grades are not the only factor in evaluating school applicants and job candidates. From Rhodes Scholar selections to college applications, excellence in other areas such as leadership, volunteer activities, sports and arts is equally important (p82-90). In American schools, students are encouraged to do volunteer work. So much so that many schools have guidelines for how much time students are expected to spend serving in the community. Children learn the value of giving from an early age. Volunteer activities is one way Americans feel a part of things and share the goal of serving and contributing to build their communities. From neighborhood watch programs to environmental issues, Americans do not wait for the government to initiate action: they take action to bring about the changes they desire. Therefore, Americans view volunteer work as a way to teach children and young adults values such as cooperation and teamwork, dedication and work ethics, equality and social justice, leadership, generosity and compassion for
Canada had not always been a loving and accepting country. In the 20th century, Canada had committed countless acts of racism, hatred, and discrimination towards people who lived in the country. Yet over the years, Canada has evolved from this status and has proven its humanitarianism by fulfilling many acts of greatness. Humanitarian countries have earned this title by altering the conditions of a person by improving lifestyles, helping, and sharing general concern for the common man. Canada showed this trait by firstly making numerous peacekeeping acts to benefit others and themselves. Secondly, Canada has continued to better the lives of its residents by giving multiple benefits to those who are citizens. And lastly, Canada is one of the most culturally diverse nations and will accept all, based on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. No matter the cruelty Canada has shown in its past, the efforts it has made to redeem itself is more than anyone can ever overlook. Canada’s acts even today continue to show its ability to be a humanitarian nation.
The world needs more of the ‘beaver’ and the ever-popular ‘maple leaf’. Canada’s priority to be involved in world-affairs has been admired by the world. It has topped the International Reputation Survey with only Germany in the lead (“Germany”). History from 1914 to 1988 plays a significant role on how people think of Canada. Canada’s global contribution and peacekeeping missions have changed the way people look at Canadians, because they have made the world a peaceful and a better place to live in. Moreover, Canada’s vision as a just society attracts people to the country like honey attracts bees. Canada’s global contribution, its treatment towards minorities, and its peacekeeping missions drive it towards being one of the most reputed countries
I believe volunteerism is an extremely important part of society; unfortunately, I have discovered many people do not share my convictions. For example, only three of my co-workers volunteer on a regular basis, and there are twenty people within my department r...
Maple syrup, ice hockey, igloos, poutine, snow, and peacekeeping: these things conjure Canada in the minds of many around the world. Others will add health to the list, for Canada’s public health care system is one of the oldest, and most celebrated in the world because Canada has comforted to global humanitarian, migration, and medical crises for decades. To more than 90% of Canadians, the healthcare system is a source of collective pride and security, and a key element of being Canadian. To Canadians, the belief that access to health care should be based on need, not the ability to pay, is a defining national value.
Volunteering is an important contributor to our society. It is also a great opportunity to learn different skills, especially young people, and they will become a part of who you are. Your future employers will thank you for it, as will any college or university that you decide to apply too. It is also a perfect way for everyone to meet different people and experience different things. Volunteering not only actively will help people; it also helps the environment. Most of all, it allows you to become a better person for what you have
Volunteering enables a person to develop new skills that he or she would otherwise not have been able to develop. Unlike most other organizations, a charitable organization is happy to give positions to passionate, though inexperienced, individuals who desire to help others and benefit the community. Therefore, an individual with little experience in a field of work can gain meaningful skills that he or she can use in the future. For example, while I volunteered at the hospital this summer, I learned about the daily work lives and professional duties of doctors and nurses. Had I not volunteered, I would not have learned about these things. I was always interested in the medical field, but volunteering at the hospital let me explore my interests and en...
How do you get Canadian Work Experience? Surely, every immigrant who has experienced applying for a job for the first time in Canada knows that being asked about work experience is inevitable. The reason: most Canadian employers want to hire someone who is familiar not only with the job post being offered but also with other related matters such as workplace culture, expectations, level of service, and so on. Canadian employers ask for “Canadian Work Experience” for a reason.
A common misconception about volunteering is that it only helps the cause. Often times that aspect is the only part that is highlighted when the topic of donating time comes up. There is a different side of volunteering though. Many volunteers donate their time to help better the community they live in and the people that live in it. When they choose to do this they not only help others but they are also helping better themselves. Volunteering benefits a person by building connections with peers, improving family life, expanding career skills, overcoming self doubt, having lasting life impressions, and creating new opportunities.
