Camel Advertisements
It’s no big secret, the producers of the Jerry Springer talk show knew exactly what would happen when they put the Ku Klux Klan and the Black Panther Party on the same stage. The two groups started fighting and much of the nation tuned in to watch it. In the same manner, Camel Cigarettes Company released an advertisement that parodied that kind of TV program. The advertisement, titled “Bizarre Bigfoot Love Triangle,” shows the kind of scene that would be typical in a Jerry Springer episode. The characters consist of Bigfoot in the middle, two women fighting with bouncers attempting to hold them back, a host who pretends to look confused, and a cheering audience. “viewer discretion advised” label that is put on Camel advertisements. This is also a parody in itself of the new rating system that has evolved for TV, movies, and music recently. One of the abbreviations listed is BR which stands for “Big Ratings,” another comment that applies to Jerry Springer.
Anybody who has seen “Jerry Springer” knows the true reaction of most of the audience. Many people think that the show is funny, outrageous, and sometimes obscene. Sometimes, it is even considered comical, and that is what this ad is doing; it is appealing to people who are familiar with Jerry Springer and his show. When people see this ad they immediately think about the show, and that is what makes it work. It has little to do with the cigarettes; and except for the fact that Sasquatch is smoking one, there is no relation between the Jerry Springer show and the experience of smoking Camel cigarettes. There just isn’t a correlation. One thing it could be implying, however, is that if one smokes Camel cigarettes, that person will have scantily clad women fighting over him.
As for the target audience, it is directed primarily at men who like to watch or see stuff like the Jerry Springer show. In reality, this includes the age group that are younger than 18. In fact, this age group is indeed a big part of the target audience whether or not cigarette companies would like to admit. Many teens like Springer’s show and since this ad is similar to that, it causes the reader to be amused. In a way, this amusement causes the reader to not think about all the negative aspects of smoking.
Of course we cannot stop there, but it is a good place to start. The advertisement starts off with how a soon to be couple (spoiler) met. As predicted, Sarah drops her books and Juan helps here. However, after this moment, the advertisement takes a new turn. Sarah offers the guy a piece of Extra Gum. Now, why is that important? This is important because Sarah uses that piece of gum as a gateway to get past the initial social awkwardness when you first meet someone. At this stage, it portrays Extra as a way to swiftly bypass the awkwardness and go directly for social interaction. (i.e. Talking)

The farmers were accustomed to a daily routine. Their activities revolved around farming. The farmers used traditional methods that were created by their ancestors. Many of the traditions of small villages were abandoned and they were introduced to new things. This helped the villages to become more advanced. Abandoning traditions allowed the small villages also become familiar to new technology. New features were introduced to Britain, such as the cultivation of turnips and potatoes. Two of the contributors to agriculture were Jethro Tull and Lord Towenshend. Those men made the importance of root crops important to agriculture. In addition to the innovations helping villages, they could also hurt them. These changes were very complex for the farmers. Learning new techniques could be confusing and could also destroy their crops, which would definitely hurt the farmers.
The young professionals are not only the focal point in the center of the image, they are also considerably larger than any other element, taking up almost two thirds of the illustration. This drives home the point that younger individuals truly are targeted by this ad. Additionally, the RJ Reynolds company gave the primary slogan “Salem Spirit” a very large and easily legible font, ultimately making it the only text in the image truly discernable from a distance. Clearly, the advertisers want viewers to place greater importance on these two items than on anything else in the picture. The truthful information, in other words the Surgeon General’s Warning in the lower left part of the image as well as the potentially harmful contents of each cigarette just above it, is noticeably smaller and thus deprecated. This coerces the target audience into focusing on the positive impact that Salem cigarettes will have on their lives while deceptively drawing attention away from the
The target audience is both males and females in their late teens to mid twenties. This company gets the male side of the equation by getting their attention and interest drawn to the attractive woman on the right with bright colors drawing your attention there as well as the bottle of whiskey which is right in the middle of the page. Then what gets these peoples attention to stay there is the fact they have an incredibly good looking female who is posing in next to nothing. Then a way that they try and get the females to look at the advertisement and read it is by showing a very plain girl who seems to be very typical of girls during their younger years. Then beside they show the same girl who now has become a women who is very attractive and just seems so much more powerful and sure of herself. One way that you can achieve that is if you drink Evan Williams Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey.
Smoking Kills. This is no longer a myth, it’s a fact. According to the British Medical Journal, every time a person smoke a cigarette, he or she will lose about eleven minutes of life here on earth and subject yourself to cancer. In the advertisement below, you can easily tell from just looking at the picture that this ad is against smoking. The ad portrays the message that smoking is deadly, and is able to be comprehended by people of all ages in the hopes that the viewers do not get into a fatal habit such as abusing cigarettes. Essentially, smoking cigarettes is a long term form of suicide. A man is holding a lit cigarette in his hand with his middle and pointer finger, and his thumb held up. As shown in the
Marlboro is currently one of biggest cigarette distributer in the world. Originally, Marlboro was targeted towards women with the slogan “Mild As May” Campaign until Philip Morris repositioned Marlboro at 1950, with the objective of attracting a wide target audience of American men to save their failing brand. The company began to advertise towards men because they wanted to increase customer while hoping to increase their profits. Therefore, in order to attract their targeted audience, Leo Burnett took the initiative to design the new brand image in which they use an American symbol, the cowboy. The Marlboro Man campaign was not successful merely because of the cigarettes that it advertised but instead, “Marlboro Man” represented the ways in which white males defined their status in American society. The “Marlboro Man” transformed from an advertising campaign to a representation of white American men.
This advertisement gives off negative feedback on how the liquor makes the men act. This advertisement tells you Belvedere is easier to get down unlike sexual assault victims; they will put up a fight. It makes men that drink this liquor seem lifeless and disgusting, the way the advertisement shows what happens when this liquor is drunk. I highly doubt that this advertisement would make companies want to buy this product for their own stores or bars. They would not want any issues with women being sexually assaulted, or them being accused for it. I feel as it this advertisement was still out, people would blame this liquor for many sexual assaults that may have happened to women over the many
Nowadays, the only advertisements one sees on TV of cigarettes are the ones showing someone how deadly they can be, as seen in figure 2. Believe it or not, back in the 1930s, if one smoked cigarettes, they were cool and glamourous. Women were sexy and independent when they had a cigarette between their lips. Now, however, if a woman is seen smoking, she is seen as having a disgusting habit. The reality of smoking, seen in figure 2, is that a cigarette does not make a woman appealing. It’s just not cool or trendy anymore to smoke and once they banned smoking in certain areas, people lost interest. Smoking is something that strips one of all beauty leaving them rotting on the inside and out.
Based on the voice of the narrator, we can conclude that the commercial was produced in Australia. The anti-smoking campaign heating up pretty well (at least in the United States) within the last seven or so years, so it’s likely the audience has been reached at it’s maximum, much like similar campaigns. This commercial is a bit unique as it targets primarily the smoker who is also a parent. Many of its sorts typically are aimed at teenagers, those tryin...
However, every day there are kids, not old enough to drive, take a puff from their first cigarette and become unaware of toxins that are consuming their bodies. For young smokers, they want to fit in with their peers and it gives them a false sense of autonomy. They are fascinated by smoking and think it looks cool. Each day, an estimated 2,100 youth and young adults who have been occasional smokers become daily cigarette smokers(CDC). Smoking sneaks up on them, every day you smoke more than before; that’s because of nicotine. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance. It ends up burying itself in the consumer’s body and mentally the sensation gets you addicted. While some people might argue, smoking helps to cope with depression and stress; it kills you overtime. Physical withdrawal. On average smoking cigarettes, takes 10 years from your life away. Walt Disney, George Harrison and Steve McQueen all died from lung cancer. The ad displays a man loading up the revolver with cigarettes, it conveys a message that with every cigarette you are essentially killing yourself, similarly to a game of Russian roulette, you play till you
Advertisement is everywhere around us and there is no way of escaping it. Every time you turn there is advertisement weather you can see it or not. When you turn the TV on there is advertisement, there’s billboards almost everywhere you look, social media, internet, newspapers, and magazines. Advertisement is found pretty much everywhere you look. Social media sites such as Facebook and twitter spend billions of dollars on advertisement. When you are scrolling down your new feed you can an ad for Finishline or a credit card companies. For an example, the other day I was on Facebook and I saw an ad for Nordstorm for some shoes and I clicked on it and bought the shoes right away. That’s how companies trick you. Tao-te Ching asks in his reading, “Do you want to improve the world? I don’t think it can be done” (209). What he means by this is that the society and the world is already so messed up nothing can be done to change it. I agree with him on this 100 percent. Advertisement has ruined the minds of humans that I don’t think it is possible to be done.
