Advertisement is everywhere around us and there is no way of escaping it. Every time you turn there is advertisement weather you can see it or not. When you turn the TV on there is advertisement, there’s billboards almost everywhere you look, social media, internet, newspapers, and magazines. Advertisement is found pretty much everywhere you look. Social media sites such as Facebook and twitter spend billions of dollars on advertisement. When you are scrolling down your new feed you can an ad for Finishline or a credit card companies. For an example, the other day I was on Facebook and I saw an ad for Nordstorm for some shoes and I clicked on it and bought the shoes right away. That’s how companies trick you. Tao-te Ching asks in his reading, “Do you want to improve the world? I don’t think it can be done” (209). What he means by this is that the society and the world is already so messed up nothing can be done to change it. I agree with him on this 100 percent. Advertisements are one of many things that Americans cannot get away from. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.
According to Karl Marx Capitalism depends on the sale of commodities. If enough commodities are not sold companies can not grow or survive. This means that they must find a way to sell their products or they will perish. This problem gave way to advertising- a way for companies to present their product in a way that makes potential consumers desire them. The Propaganda campaign grew extremely fast, as a staggering one hundred seventy five billion dollars a year is spent on advertising. Advertisements of which could exist for anything, from pencils, laptops, plates, food and sports. Advertisements can be found anywhere - beneath your feet, on a building, on TV, on the internet, in a magazine and more.
Is advertising the ultimate means to inform and help us in our everyday decision-making or is it just an excessively powerful form of mass deception used by companies to persuade their prospects and customers to buy products and services they do not need? Consumers in the global village are exposed to increasing number of advertisement messages and spending for advertisements is increasing accordingly.
Advertising is designed to foster a desire to purchase goods and services, yet it is much deeper than that—advertising is a system of effective manipulation that twists the mentalities of those subjected to it. It shapes people’s views of the world and warps their connections to each other. Therefore, advertising not only shapes their personal values but also distorts them until their principles no longer come from within them. Thus, in my opinion, advertising, unless deeply rooted in high ethical standards, destroys any concept of community, common morality or deep bonding.
Many companies spend over millions of dollars advertising every year, and these advertisements influence how an individual thinks and acts in a society. It becomes a significant aspect of our lives whether it has come to our acknowledgment or not. It influences us to the extent we believe the information presented in the media are “normal”. To be precise, advertisements create and define the social norms. These concepts are strongly built into my mind since a young age, especially the gender roles between men and women.

Thus, advertising companies have been using different advertising tactics to lure people into buying their products since, according to American Consumerism and the Global Environment, America became a consumer-based economy and society (“American Consumer Society”). Many of the tactics used by advertisers are considered deceiving and unfair. They use different techniques to attract our attention and get consumers to purchase their product. According to a handout provided by William Myers, there are two types of techniques used in ads: rhetorical and graphic (n.p.). Rhetorical techniques used in ads are the way that the advertisers can manipulate words to attract and convince consumers to buy their product. The rhetorical techniques that are used in ads are known as weasel words which, according to William Lutz, “Advertisers use weasel words to appear to be making a claim for a product when in fact they are making no claim at all” (309). Lutz is an English professor for Rutgers University who specializes in doublespeak and more specifically weasel words (304). While the rhetoric advertisers employ may make it seem like they want the consumer to get the best product, according to Stuart Hirschberg, “the underlying intent of all advertising is to persuade specific audiences” (227). It comes in many different forms, and quite possibly the broadest and most powerful form is advertisements. Human beings are types of individuals that are hard to fully grasp their attention to make them focus on something, but advertisements have the extraordinary ability to do that. More than half of young ladies are doubting their body image because of all the advertisement seen every day. People may not realize the impact that advertisements have on the younger generations especially the girls. As it is young girls are vulnerable and have low self-esteem at this age. Some of the negative effects that the advertisement may have are: eating disorders, encouraging young ladies grow up faster than they are supposed to, girls being subjective to degrade themselves. Our society is being negatively impacted, by becoming a consumer driven society constantly distracted by overwhelming persuasive advertisements, as opposed to ideal informative advertisements. The most vulnerable and negatively impacted targets of persuasive advertising are the younger, less mature, and/or less knowledgeable and self-directed consumers. Ironically, it was once said “An advertising agency is 85 percent confusion and 15% commission” (Allen). It is quite clear that social benefits are not part of this equation. The harm and severe social related costs far outweigh any economic growth and benefits deemed necessary for advertising and marketing companies.

The people that typically fit into this category of consumers are people that buy items to fit in or to impress people. Sometimes ads can be misleading in ways that confuse the consumer to purchase the product for reasons other than the actual product was designed for. Advertisers influence consumers by alluding the consumer into buying this product over a generic product that could perform the same task, directing the advertisement towards a certain audience, and developing the ad where it is visually attractive.

Many individuals have noticed them all of their lives and have just come to accept them. Advertisers use many subliminal techniques to get the advertisements to work on consumers. Many people don’t realize how effective ads really are. One example is an advertisement for High Definition Television from Samsung. It appears in an issue of Entertainment Weekly, a very popular magazine concerning movies, music, books, and other various media. The magazine would appeal to almost anyone, from a fifteen-year-old movie addict to a sixty-five-year-old soap opera lover. Therefore the ad for the Samsung television will interest a wide array of people. This ad contains many attracting features and uses its words cunningly in order to make its product sound much more exciting and much better than any television would ever be.
