The idea of perfection personified through facial expressions of self-confidence and uncompromising appearances in each image. These are just a few ways in which Calvin Klein’s ad campaign tries to attract costumers. Attempting to convince the public that Calvin Klein clothing will look as impressive on anyone and will have people staring in envy like many do at the ads is the technique being used in this ad campaign along with many other aspects such as the setting, the outfits, and the models, which all play a big role in the ads effectiveness. The model on display in each ad appears to be showing them self off and the women are doing some kind of dance that attracts viewers attention.
The background in each image is plain and empty, leaving the focus on nothing but the model and the brand name. The first shot of the car is when the car is coming to a stop at the stoplight. We get a quick view of the sleek black and white exterior. The only other time that we get to see the outside of the car is after the dialogue has finished and the light at the stoplight turns from red to green, and they proceed to drive away. Companies that sell products are always trying to find new and interesting ways to get buyers and get people’s attention. It has become a part of our society today to always have products being shown to them. As claimed in Elizabeth Thoman’s essay Rise of the Image Culture: Re-Imagining the American Dream, “…advertising offered instructions on how to dress, how to behave, how to appear to others in order to gain approval and avoid rejection”. The ad for Opium perfume depicts a young brunet that has nicely shaped body and wears nothing but golden slippers, necklace and bracelet.
