Subject

This report analyzed the problem regarding the lack of campus parking spaces at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) and recommended a solution to improve this situation in the short term.

Purpose

The purpose of this report is to provide a final recommendation to Cal Poly’s UPD to deal with the problem of the lack of parking spaces. This report will provide two initial ideas and one final recommendation for improving the Cal Poly campus parking problem after research and analysis.

Background

Cal Poly is located in San Luis Obispo (SLO), which was a small and slow city. The public transportation system in SLO doesn’t cover every part of the city. Due to the low population density, it …show more content…

In addition, Cal Poly decided to close a large parking lot to build a new student dorm. That means there is a greater demand for parking spots and less supply. The parking problem will become more severe as more students come to Cal Poly. Moreover, Cal Poly offers important events for students such as career fairs. During these events, the UPD closes one of the parking lots for students so that guests can park there. This decreases the number of parking spots for students. Furthermore, Cal Poly usually holds sport games in the stadium on weekends. In this situation, the UPD decides to block most of the metered parking on campus which result a fewer parking spots. In addition, they would allow the guests to park at the general parking lots and occupy the parking spots originally intended for students. However, students who are not living on campus usually go to the library to study on the weekends. If there is a sport game, and all the parking spots are unavailable, it makes it more difficult for students to study in the library.

In the Cal Poly Police Department website, a parking statistics indicate that on fall 2009, there are a total 8731 parking spots on campus, of which 2962 are general parking spots for students. However, they sold 3593 for general parking to students, which is about 21% more than the available spaces in general
