When people are feeling tired throughout the day, it can be awfully very tempting to grab an energy drink for a quick energy boost. Most of these beverage’s (like Monster and Red Bull) energy comes in the form of caffeine, a nerve system stimulant. Though ok to drink in moderation, overconsumption of these energy boosting drinks can be detrimental to one’s health. Along with high amounts of caffeine, these drinks contain other harmful ingredients. Caffeine raises your blood pressure when you drink/eat it, raising your blood pressure in general is not a good thing but imagine drinking and/or eating caffeine daily, and your blood pressure constantly rising. Another negative aspect is that caffeine can have a disruptive effect on your sleep. The most obvious effect of the caffeine is that it can make it hard for you to fall asleep. By this definition, and after knowing the effects of caffeine upon the human body, I have come to the conclusion that drinking caffeine is a sign of a lack of respect for oneself, and of an unappreciative attitude toward the life that each of us has been blessed with. Athletes around the world are drinking these beverages for a boost in athletic performance and stamina to get an edge over their opponents. These drinks are even being promoted by professional athletes! This increasing popularity and consumption begs the question: are these drinks safe? I decided to dig into this question, and I have found some pretty startling answers. The drinks may bring enhanced performance and energy, but they also come with potential health risks. These health risks heavily outweigh the benefits the drinks could possibly bring.
Beverages containing caffeine, sugar and niacin (vitamin B12) can lead to serious health problems. According to caffeine informer, one of them is cardiac arrest. While caffeine calculator can show limitation of energy drinks, everyone does not follow this rule. Those with heart problems are at the high risk to face cardiac arrest after only small amount energy drinks. Next are headaches and migraines, excessive energy drinks can lead to extreme headaches from the caffeine withdrawal syndrome. Changing the amount of caffeine people ingest daily causes more frequent headaches. A very high amount of sugar is responsible for damage the insulin producing cells of the pancreas which leads to type II diabetes. Excessive consumption of energy drinks can also lead to vomiting and thus, causing dehydration and acid abrasion of teeth and oesophagus. They can also lead to hypertension. For those with normal blood pressure, this is not affecting, but those with previously increased blood pressure could be leading themselves at risk of cerebral vascular stroke and other problems related to high blood pressure, after consuming high amount of energy drinks. The American Heart Association (2017) showed that energy drinks causes a significant negative effect on blood pressure than drinks that contain caffeine alone as the active ingredient. Most American’s need a little boost to start their day. Is a cup of coffee or an energy drink the better choice for your daily source of caffeine? Which of the two is healthier? It is a proven fact that coffee contains more caffeine then most energy drinks. For a lot of people drinking coffee has to be on their daily to-do list. While a fluid ounce of typical coffee has 18 milligrams of caffeine, a fluid ounce of Rockstar or Monster only pack 10 milligrams of caffeine.
