The business discourse community is large and has many different sub-communities. Although it is a large discourse community, all the different branches use the six pillars of a discourse in the same way and for the same purposes. Over the past 30 years, the business community has changed a lot. The introduction of instant messaging has brought good and bad things to how the discourse community communicates. I will introduce how the business community uses the six pillars and how the introduction of faster communication has changed how the communication between business partners or coworkers has become faster, but also less personal. I will start with how the business community uses the six pillars of a discourse community, according to John Swales, to communicate effectively without spending extra time to relay a message. The first being a shared goal among the community, the business world has a very common goal of return on investment (Jeff Goan, Question 6). Put in a simpler way, make more money compared to what you are spending. An example of this goal in my experiences would be when Bart Hester was contracting for a house he was hired to help build, he can only spend how much the costumer is willing to spend. When hiring all the different people to build the house, he can’t overspend because that cuts into how much he can make during the job. The second and third characteristics are the mechanisms that are used to communicate with each other and the purpose of these mechanisms.
