Discourse Community

This quote from Simon Mainwaring emphasizes the purpose of social media and how using it works to create a community. Each discourse community has a different standard in communication and everyday we are asked to use different ways to communicate. The way we communicate can tell a lot about the community we are in. Each day is a new opportunity to communicate with different people who are a part of several communities. Every community has a different view of communication but they work together to achieve their goals.

Every community, we are part can identify who we are and where we come from. Our family is the most important discourse community we are part of and it tells the most of who we are. My family has a huge impact on the way I communicate.

In a family community, we communicate more casually because we feel more comfortable around our family members. When we communicate, we must show respect to our family members, especially our elders. We create an atmosphere of a loving community, which does not leave anyone out. In my family community we discuss anything that comes to our mind. Any topic of conversation is open in a family community. Our family is the first community we are part of and therefore has the most effect on our identity. A city is a larger community, hence, has a weaker effect on our identity. In general a larger discourse community has a weaker effect on your identity.
From the moment we wake up to the time we go to sleep, we most likely communicate with someone. In this age phones and computers make it easier to communicate with people far and near. We could text a friend, or email a business partner. We communicate differently around different people. I worked at Bob Evans over the summer and gave me insight on how having a job is. This first job I had and it taught me many tasks that will help me in the future. When trying to run a business you must communicate efficiently or the business will fail. At a work environment we speak in a more professional manner. You are asked to communicate more effectively in order for your workday to go smoother. Poor communication can have disastrous results and can get you fired. We see our boss as an authoritative figure and must speak to him in a professional manner. As a boss you must speak to your employees in an authoritative manner in order for them to see you as the leader. Every time you communicate in a workspace you are being judged. That is if you send a client an email and you spell a word wrong that could have an effect on if they should do business with you or not. Face to face communication is also of high importance in a workplace community. In a job interview, it is essential to be a strong communicator. In a workplace it is essential to be a good communicator and is where many people communicate.
This is similar to a school in which you treat your fellow students with respect. You should also be sensitive to the other student and treat the way you treat yourself. You should treat your instructor with the same respect you treat other students. You should the instructor your utmost attention and try not to distract others from the task at hand. In a school community we are in an environment where people focus on learning new things. We discuss a variety of topics so communication with instructors and fellow classmates are essential. School is essential community and is great place to communicate with other people.
The activities we participate in such as sports, clubs, and bands are discourse communities.

I have been playing in soccer since elementary school and consider it a huge part in my life. As a team we share common goal of winning our soccer games and trying to be a better team. I had soccer practices every week so I become closer to my teammates. We communicate over phone and converse about when our practices are and will be playing. We speak face about strategies in soccer and how to be better team. We communicate during the game on different line-ups and plays. Being a good communicator is a key objective in soccer and will help us win our games. I also was part of the school band and played the trombone. The band community is a large community that not only consists of the band members but the parents and teachers. We communicate about the different music we play and how to play better on our instruments. We usually communicate face to face during our band practices. I had a good relationship with my band members. The band community has had a big influence on me and gave me a better understanding on how to be a good communicator.

My church community has a huge influence and is similar to a family community. I try to go to church every Sunday and participate in the service. People are spoken to with respect and there is caring atmosphere. In church we have different prayers and sermons. Topics we discuss in church are about the bible and how to live a better Christian life. Being part of the same faith give us many topics to converse about. In church we talk face-to-face and I have a good relationship with the people

Every member of the discourse community is important and each member has a part to play. Each individual makes up his or her community. The communities we are in are not about how we are alike but what our differences. Those differences consist of personality, gender, race, and many more. While we have similar traits in the communities we cherish and celebrate our differences. My friends are part of a community that is part of my social life. We speak in a calmer manner where we feel more comfortable. We communicate over the phone and have face-to-face conversations. With my friends we do stuff we enjoy and we have a good time. This discourse community is similar to your family community. In my friend community we respect each other and our choices.
Every discourse community has different ways of communication but each community works together to achieve their goals. Every community we are part of affects our identity. Each community has different people but come together as one. In general the whole planet is part of the same community. We all are from different regions and are part of other communities, but we are all human. The communities in life represent unity and create our own identity.
