Throughout these past ten weeks of BUS100W, I have worked hard to improve my professional communication abilities and to develop a deeper understanding of utilizing positive and efficient business communication techniques. From paying attention to lectures, participating in discussions, and attending workshops, I overall gained massive insights regarding business communication and business writing. With this reflective evaluation, I aim to assess my progress in various aspects of the course, including fostering goodwill, utilizing your attitude, cover letter/resume writing, crafting apology letters, engaging in business common exercises, honing my professionalism, and more. However, I will also assess my participation, question-asking, lecture …show more content…
I now understand the audience's perspective, needs, and intelligence is crucial for effective communication, fostering positive feelings towards oneself and the organization. Applying these concepts entails conducting a thorough audience analysis, tailoring messaging, putting the "you attitude" into practice in both content and structure, and utilizing inclusive language and positive emphasis. Overall I have fully grasped that putting the viewpoint and values of the audience first makes communication more relevant and engaging, which helps to foster goodwill and reputation-building in a variety of settings. Another key lesson from BUS100W is how to craft a comprehensive cover letter and resume. I learned a great deal about organizing and effectively presenting my professional experience, abilities, and successes through these components. Additionally, I learned the difference between resumes and cover letters. While resumes primarily highlight qualifications for a specific position, cover letters address broader organizational needs and …show more content…
I'm also appreciative that I have now learned to make improved business papers and research, how to analyze business scenarios and issues, and more. Regarding professionalism, developing writing and business communication abilities is, in general, essential to fostering professionalism at work and school. It has improved my capacity to manage conflicts, project a professional image, establish credibility and trust, communicate effectively, progress my career, sharpen my problem-solving skills, and my adaptability to a variety of professional settings. By making an investment in the development of my communication skills, I may have increased my professional abilities and can create a more positive and productive atmosphere. To put it simply, BUS100W has truly helped me in developing my writing and business communication skills, allowing me to progress more comfortably going forward academically and professionally. However, moving onto characteristics and habits, I still have to improve my engagement in lectures/discussions, attendance, and
When studying Business or other majors in most universities in the United States, every student must endure a recurring theme eventually. In some way, shape, or form every student is exposed to at least one Communication class as a general requirement. Most students ignore the value in these lessons due to the ignorant belief that the information is too obvious or unrelated to their career. The business world is one of these careers that exemplifies the importance of communication studies. The movie Office Space humorously illustrates workplace communication etiquette, as well as, overviews of interpersonal communication through a hierarchical structure. When looking at this film from a communication standpoint, almost every scene demonstrates the structures and styles that Wood describes in our textbook. In the film, the main
Without the ability to communicate effectively, job seekers can’t hope to achieve their goals. Students must show proficiency in oral, non-verbal and written communication; as well as active listening. Among many other requirements, students must also show that they're capable of acknowledging the views of others, following dire...
This course has taught me many things. I was not aware that there was so much information to learn about communication, but I have been pleasantly surprised. This course has taught me better ways to communicate with my significant other, my family, my friends, my co-workers, as well as with strangers. I have greatly enjoyed each assignment because they challenged me to examine the flaws within my own communication style. I hope to employ the skills and tools I have learned in this course and apply them to all my future communications.
My communication style tends to float between two very distinct classifications found in the Forbes’ Communication Styles PowerPoint and the DISC Personality Profile descriptions. This assignment has allowed me the opportunity to further reflect upon my own communication styles in varying environments, as well as identify and hopefully minimize the weaknesses that I need to improve upon before I become the sole administrator of a site. To gain respect and build trust as an instructional leader, communication is a two-way street; staff consumption of messages is just as important as administrator distribution of them.

One of the very first things I learned was rhetorical knowledge, which is the means of understanding communication and how to communicate better. What really helped me understand this concept was the rhetorical triangle (insert link to notes). I now have a better understanding of how to communicate better throughout my writing. I can use my purpose as an author to craft a message that will influence my audience and meet their expectations. I have been using this knowledge in my other classes and I have seen improvement; for example, with my SDV portfolio (insert hyperlink) I met the expectations of Professor Morrison and received a god grade. That is proof of my hard work and understanding of rhetorical knowledge. Another concept we went over was the Appeals triangle (insert notes). With that I learned about Ethos, Pathos, and logos. Ethos is gaining trust with your audience. Pathos is the ability to feel the audience’s emotions and place that within your wor...
This reflective essay has critically reviewed my personal and professional skills that are essential for communication and developing positive relationships with others. It has discussed the skills identified in the skills audit that I needed more confidence in for communication and effective relationships. It has finally linked two communication theories to both skills
There are many ways to measure success, and as the reading discusses, there are also many ways to measure intelligence. Though intelligence and success are generally correlated, a high level of traditional intelligence does not always guarantee a high level of success. In the case of the Termites, the scientist Dr. Terman focused his research on traditional measures of intelligence, notably the IQ of individuals. He believed that those individuals with the highest IQs would reach the highest level of success, and while I believe that raw intelligence is important, I also know that creative and divergent thinking is important.
The first skill for managers to understand and practice is communications, because it is the foundation for all actions in the workplace and it allows the supervisor or manager an opportunity to build relationships with the overall workgroup without alienating anyone in the work environment (Roper, 2005). As a manager it is very important to be able to communicate effectively. As Robert Kent, former dean of Harvard Business School has said, “In business, communication is everything” (Blalock, 2005). The Wisconsin Business School Alumni Association recently reported that managers spend 75 percent to 80 percent of their time communicating (Blalock, 2005). Communication skills are critical for success in an organization. Successful managers communicate to where their targeted audience understands (Froschheiser, 2010). Managers need to give positive and negative feedback to their employees to let them know their strengths and weaknesses and where they n...
Effective business communication is central to the success of an individual’s career and consequently to that of the overall business entity. It would be imaginable therefore that there is some form of correlation between effective communication skills and such success. To put this into context, University of Kent (2011) has placed Verbal Communication at the top of the ten skills that employers most commonly look for. On the same note, anything that hinders effective communication is bound to have a negative effect not only on the specific message delivery, but also on the overall success of a career. In this paper, some of the barriers to effective business communication are discussed, with a few examples of how they affect the process.
The purpose of this paper is not to teach you, or to show you how interpersonal communication is essential to everyday life at home or work. But, I am going to do my best to at least show you how essential communication skills are in all areas of life by using me as the example. My plan is to focus on some of the elements of interpersonal communication that we have been touching on this semester. While reading our Interpersonal Communications Book, three goals kept being highlighted that I personally wanted to accomplish by the end of course. I’m sure that by now have noticed that I keep referring to my topics as goals. The reason why I’m doing so is because I’m still on that learning curve…an ongoing process. If can recall back to all of our assignment in this course they all bring one collective point. That point is that, Interpersonal communication is an essential skill in everything that we do in life.

Before exposure to the content of this course, I was confident in my ability to communicate interpersonally. Upon my first encounter with feedback from my peers, I was surprised to find out that others did not also think this. Coming into this course, I relied heavily on only verbal communication. I was introduced to several important new skills that help me communicate with others more precisely, including paraphrasing, c...
Irrespective of the environment in which one works, communication is always vital and a key factor of success. Communication happens both physically and verbally and is absolutely essential if you want to inform someone about something. ‘Loud shouting and even violence are symptoms of the ailment, not remedies.’ (Adair 2009: 3). Communication has two main components; sending out a message to someone, and ensuring the message is received correctly to the other member of the conversation. It is thus fair to say speaking and listening are vital to effective communication. This essay will initially introduce me as a student, and my career. I will give a simple SWOT analysis of me and will then go on and breakdown the different methods and techniques of effective communication. Finally, I will talk about how effective communication is needed in my current position, as well as the future.
