Have you ever been teased? Maybe even pushed around like a rag doll? Bullying is a nationwide problem. It affects people of all ages. About 90% of 4th through 8th graders have experienced bullying in the U.S.. Bullying has caused many issues, such as depression, anxiety, or even suicide. Nevertheless, even in bullying you have players, or roles you could say. Dealing with bullying is a very hard thing to do, but with each role in a bullying situation, there are dragons to slay. In every bullying situation you have three players; the bully, the victim, and the bystander.
What makes a bully? Bullies are usually people who show aggressive behavior, and they often intimidate others who in their mind do not “fit in.” Kids who are gay, transgender, overweight, or maybe even kids who come from a completely different ethnic group are often bullied. But, what is a bully’s motivation? Most kids bully because they are insecure. Bullying is their way of managing their emotions. Kids may lack attention from their families at home, and by bullying they draw attention to themselves. Bullies also believe that bullying will solve their social problems. There are those who stand up, join in, or even leave the situation alone. In truth, bystanders can have many reactions towards bullying. They can either feel strongly about it, or they can not care at all. The major issue with bystanders is that most of them do not do anything. In fact, they seem to just accept what is happening. They don’t want to bring attention to themselves or sometimes even feel that the victim “deserves” it. Nevertheless, bystanders can make a big impact. It is their job to intercede for the victim and take control of the situation. They need to understand that stopping bullying can only start with them.
