In the past few years it seems that schools have really lost touch with the discipline of students. With the increasing frequency of school shootings and acts of violence it seems that the students are running the show instead of the teachers and administrators. There are many factors that are involved in creating a great classroom or a horrible classroom. From the way the teachers punish misbehaving students or the way they reward them when they do something right, to how involved the parents are with their children's education. The purpose of this paper is to explain how classroom management, when used effectively by the teacher, can produce an excellent learning environment for students. According to C.M. Charles, the author of "Building Classroom Discipline," the definition of discipline is, "what teachers do to help students behave acceptably in school (1999,p3)." Discipline is associated to misbehavior, wherever misbehavior is found, and discipline is needed. The main goals of discipline are to prevent, suppress and redirect misbehavior. Students can also be cruel and disruptive, which can deny the purpose of learning in the classroom. Another goal of discipline is to help students control their own behavior in and outside the classroom (Charles, 1999). My own definition of discipline is using any means necessary to keep a classroom organized, productive and accessible for learning. Discipline is necessary in a classroom, to give students an opportunity to learn to there fullest. Without discipline, the classroom would be a place where teachers could not perform their job but a place for them to baby-sit misbehaved children. When the environment is not controlled it is not a healthy place for kids to learn, it seems more like a day care while parents are at work. Another is having a relationship outside the classroom with students. Being involved in their life both academically and personally increases the trust and respect from a student toward the teacher. Most students go through stages as they become older. If there are misbehaved students it is important to remember that it is common to find students that are rebels. It is important to work with the students instead of just giving them to someone else to deal with. They are just looking for some attention and they want people to notice them and like them. If a teacher follows some of the thing mentioned earlier, they it will create a healthy, happy and vigorous classroom.
In regard to classroom management, much of the research cites effective classroom management as the tool or the blueprint for an effective classroom. One article refers to classroom management as a master plan for success, creating “an air traffic control analogy” to explain the extent of the impact of classroom management on student and teacher success (Mundschenk, Miner, & Nastally 2011, p. 98). Classroom management is critical in the classroom because it provides the framework of the classroom and influences how things are run. The theme of revenge is seen throughout the play as each character extracts one form or another of revenge from a person who has wronged them. In the play the characters Hamlet, Laertes, and Fortinbras all desire revenge for a lost father; however, their motivations for murder differ.
With more than seven billion people on Earth, it is fascinating to consider how every individual is unique yet also similar in various ways. Four hundred years after it was written, Shakespeare’s Hamlet with its themes and characters is still able to illuminate the essence of individuality in human nature. In his explanation of vengeance and its varying effects and consequences, Shakespeare accomplishes such an illumination through the prism of three characters – Hamlet, Laertes, and Fortinbras – each of whom seeks vengeance for the murder of his father. Though their situations are essentially the same, each man reacts in a manner different from the others. In this respect, Hamlet and Laertes each exhibits, in his unique way, the futility and insatiable nature of revenge, while Fortinbras shows how revenge should be conducted.
There are three categories of population pyramids; expanding, stable, and contracting. A comparative observation of the 1990 population pyramid for the selected developed countries show a somewhat contractive demographic environment for both male and females. With all countries showing a considerable tapering off after the age bracket of 40 – 44 and relatively average life expectancy levels there on after. They also display signs of a steady decrease in birth rates as the person’s age in the 0 through to 14 age brackets sustain a similar level of people; with the United States being a slight exception as there are signs of an increasing birth rate in the 0 – 4 age column. The 1990 population pyramids for the selected developing countries display an expanding population trend. What this demonstrates is that these nations had a predominately younger population with high birth rates with low life expectancy levels as the population numbers severely taper off from birth. A notable observation of the population pyramids for both developed and developing European countries, and to an extent Australia and the United States of America, is the impact of World War I from the age of 70 onwards. The result has left a significant dent in the male populations and the feminisation of the 70-74 age bracket and onwards as a consequence

As a teacher managing problem behavior in your classroom can be one of the most challenging tasks. Behavior problems can range from disruption of lessons to acts of violence against fellow students and teachers. Children’s emotional setbacks and life challenges can also contribute to behavior issues at school. A study done by the Justice Center and the Public Policy Research Institute found that six out of ten students suffered from an “emotional disturbance” and were expelled or suspended between seventh and twelfth grade (Firke, 2011). This same study showed that discipline varied greatly between schools. This report also revealed the urgent need for a more thoughtful technique in school discipline policies. In many cases teachers have exhausted their classroom management strategies without success. Behavior Modification is aimed at improving school and classroom behavior, and can give teachers additional tools to help them to deal proactively and effectively with behaviors that are disruptive to students and teachers in the classroom. When children are disruptive in the classroom it can cause a lot of problems for their classmates and their teacher. Yet, in the long run, it's the disruptive child themselves who is most impacted, on both a social and educational level (Epstein, Atkins, Cullinan, Kutash, & Weaver, 2008). Behavior modification techniques should be used in school, to change the negative behaviors, and increase the positive behaviors seen in these children.
I recently took a course on cooperative discipline and found that many of my own beliefs and practices involving discipline in the classroom were validated and reinforced throughout the class. Students do choose how they will behave and the best way (maybe even the easiest way) to get them to make the right choices in the classroom is to foster a feeling of mutual respect and to give them a sense of responsibility or classroom ownership. Kids want discipline, or maybe to put it differently they want structure and predictability. And the nice thing about Linda Albert’s cooperative discipline model is that it gives the students exactly what they need. But what are our responsibilities? Linda Albert tells us that “the ultimate goal of student behavior is to fulfill a need to belong”, so it is our job to fill that need by helping the student to feel capable, connected, and able to contribute (in a positive way) to the group.
Everyone knows that when it comes to making a difference in a child’s academic and life achievements, their teachers play a large role. A teacher’s ability to relate to their students, and teach them to achieve both socially and academically contributes to how effective they are. What does it mean to be an effective teacher? Overall there seems to be an emphasis on teacher effectiveness related to how well their students are performing on standardized testing. As teachers we know there is more to being an effective teacher then just teaching our students based on tests. This paper will identify different definitions of an effective teacher along with how to assess teachers on being effective.
The teacher was rated using a rubric with specific criteria in four domains including planning and preparation, the classroom environment, instruction, and professional responsibilities (Hillsborough County Public Schools, 2012). Within each of these domains are components which are the performance factors that are relevant to classroom teachers. In domain one the components include: demonstrating knowledge of content and pedagogy, demonstrating knowledge of students, setting instructional outcomes, demonstrating knowledge of resources and technology, designing coherent instruction, and designing student assessments. The components for domain two include: creating an environment of respect and rapport, establishing a culture for learning, managing classroom procedures, managing student behavior, organizing physical space. In domain three the components included are: communicating with students, using questioning and discussion, engaging students in learning, using assessment in instruction, and demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness. There is only one component that was rated for domain four which is reflecting on teaching.
As discussed throughout this paper we build our classroom management plans based on our past experiences, our knowledge, our professional learning and our very own personal reflection. The importance of our beliefs, values and our philosophy play a major role in our planning. I, personally have a strong desire to support students who are often labelled ‘troubled’ and ‘the naughty child’, I believe there are reasons behind why students misbehave and strive to do my best as an educator to engage students through positive reinforcements as discussed and continue to put in place preventive practices. Building our own positive learning framework is key to a successful classroom. Even throughout our ongoing experiences we may adapt to other methods, theories and even values according to our journey as a teacher. Analysis of the Chapter: Educators and school administrators have many different definitions to describe what a discipline problem, in the classroom, may look like. They vary greatly, however one thing they do have in common is that they are not specific and therefore could lead to misunderstanding. Because of this, teachers may not have a good grasp on what exactly a discipline problem may look like, and as a result they will not be able to determine whether a behavior is a discipline problem or not. This, unfortunately, will lead to a decrease in student success due to the fact that disruptive behaviors will not be dealt with properly or that teachers are disciplining students when it is not a disciplinary problem. From my observations, the third problem and another new teachers’ big challenge is classroom management. New teachers are particularly unprepared for dealing with behavior problems in their classrooms. Per Melnick & Meister (2008, p.3), “Teachers with three years or fewer on the job are more than twice as likely as teachers with more experience (19 percent versus 7 percent) to say that student behavior is a problem in their classrooms.” According to the article, many beginning teachers responded that their preservice programs did very little to prepare them for the realities of classrooms, including dealing with unruly students. Discipline plays a key part in education. Respect from your students will make the classroom a better atmosphere. Rules should be established on the first day. Rules should be a thoughtful process so they can be carried out to be affective, but logical consequences. We do not want the students self esteem to be damaged.
