The idea of building a rocket did not just simply come to Homer. The idea was planted in his head as he watched Sputnik pass over his little coal mining town. There were many moments that helped to cultivate this idea, but this moment alone is what planted the seed in the fertile soil of Homer’s mind. While others saw Sputnik as only another Russian war machine, Homer saw something more inspiring. He saw humanity's future among the stars. With that one fleeting glance of a satellite over three hundred miles away, he knew that he intended to be part of that future.
