A week ago, I had a chance to go around NE Portland and browse around the ethnic shops
that spurred up from NE Sacramento Street along MLK blvd to all the way Killingsworth St. I knew there
were shops from a various immigrants but I did not know African owned shops were also a sizeable number
compared other businesses in the neighborhood. That was until I stumbled on Hashi Halal Market and the
Horn of Africa restaurant in NE Portland. Both place are favorites of locals but they mostly rely as a
customer base East African immigrants who immigrated to the U.S around the 1990s. Hashi’s is one of
about a dozen African shops that have recently popped up in this section of Portland.
At first when I entered Hashi’s, it just looked like any other grocery shop in the city. But
taking a good look at the merchandise, my thought changed about the little congested store. The place
looked jammed with imported items from all over the globe. Cumin seeds, chicken seasoning cubes, curry
powder, milk powder, grinded African pepper, cinnamon peels, dates, packed the thin size shelves. About a
dozen bags of basmati rice lay underneath the shelves ready to be grabbed. Imported spaghetti as well as
U.S made brands were elegantly stacked against the backdrop of a taken down store sign. Potato chips
cluttered near the register couple feet from the floor, perhaps so kids can reach, ransack, and punch them
before their parents can detect them.
The smell was that of aroma. The store smelled like a heavy and air-deprived scents of various ingredients rose together and hovered the ceiling motionless. Imagine the smallest of all spaces with the most odors full and smelly of all ...

...ind of meat of your choice (mostly lamb). I devoured the whole plate and washed it down with mango juice. I looked at the menu saw that restaurant also serves a variety of East African foods such as rice and Pasta with Goat Meat, Chopped Beef fried with vegetables called Suqaar, Fish, Beef Stake, Chicken, Delicious soup and more. It is a wonderful destination for anyone willing to bite a piece of meal rich in the true taste of Somalia and Ethiopia.
In conclusion, the NE Portland has flourished and didn’t know much about African immigrants owned quite a number of stores, restaurants, saloons, and coffee shops. They refurbished the area by opening small businesses of many types and this restored the attractiveness the area has been known to have. Right now the businesses have survived the recession by integrating the global taste and attracting ethnic customer base.
Everyone wants their food to taste superb when going out to eat. Both restaurants served excellent homemade chips and salsas as well as queso dip. Reading the menu to order was no problem and both places had a wide variety of options to choose...
The Pilsen Neighborhood is located Lower West Side of Chicago, extending approximately from Western Avenue and Blue Island Avenue to Sixteenth Street and Canal Street. (Pero.) Today Pilsen has transformed into a colorful, artistic, and beautiful community with the population majority shifted towards the Hispanic. Over the course of these years Pilsen has gone through many changes ranging from cultural to economic and societal changes that have shaped into its present day form. Pilsen’s residents have resisted attempts to gentrify their neighborhood, and have preserved the community as a gateway for Hispanic immigrants.
No matter what a diner is craving, Carrabba’s is sure to have an appealing entree to satisfy
I would suggest that they incorporate more diversity in their ads and campaigns to reach different ethnicities if they want to continue to expand. Also, in stores, particularly the Willow Grove, PA location, is very large and spacious. Upon entering the store it is primarily women’s apparel and accessories, as well as men’s. Maybe the company can incorporate more of its products in this location, to provide consumers with more of a product assortment.
They also have an in-store reasonably priced restaurant to get customers to stay there longer.
This mini-ethnography has taught me to look at people in a completely different way. It has opened my mind to a whole new view of how people interact and carry on their daily lives. I have found that the people of Wal-Mart can vary greatly although everyone is there for the same reason. Wal-Mart has become a place that supports many people no matter what race, size, or gender.

Entering the Courtyard Residence I had some presumptions of what we would experience with the older generations. As a result of my own experiences being part of a family composed of two different ethnic groups (white and Mexican), I have experienced many awkward moments with the older generations on my Father's side of the family who slip with racist remarks. Because of this, I had a hunch that we might encounter these moments at the Courtyard residence as well. That being said, it became an interest of mine to research the different ethnic groups who have migrated to Portland and find out what their perception of this city is. Although we may be called the most liberal and accepting city in the United States, I have often felt that this is not so in terms of being socially accepting as much as environmentally accepting.
Kunara Marketplace is one of the largest and best health food stores on the coast. Attached to the large store is their beautiful sunny café that is a perfect highway stop to fuel up on veggie quinoa sushi, tasty sandwiches, enormous salad or falafel wraps, fresh wholesome salads, baked goods, raw desserts as well as organic coffee and freshly made smoothies.
Despite the outbreak of the First World War, the store strived to give a great service to the public, giving a meaning to the famous phrase “business as usual” (Harry Gordon Selfridge, 1914). During the period of 1919 and 1924, the company started its first expansion in Oxford Street and was selling everything from make-up to toys. So far, over 15 million had shopped in the store.
When I was first assigned this research paper on Voodoo, the first thing I thought of was Voodoo dolls, zombies, and evil magic. I think Voodoo is an evil religion which sacrifices humans as well as animals to demonic gods. I think it has been around for thousands of years, but is little left today. I believe that Voodoo is nothing but evil and the work of the devil. Voodoo originated in Western Africa by the Yoruba tribe. The Yoruba religion has about four hundred lesser gods called Orisa. This is not the actual Voodoo religion as we know it today, but plays an important role in it. Voodoo believes that the Grand Master or God rules over all things, but pays no attention to human affairs. This is why they believe in lower spirits or Loa to whom they worship and make sacrifices to(Belgum 14-28). When the slave trade started, people of the Yoruba tribe were captured and brought over as slaves. when the slaves arrived, they were baptized into the Catholic religion. The slaves continued to practice their native religion in secret which over time was mixed with Catholicism to create the Voodoo that we know today (Introduction 1). Over sixty-million people still continue to practice Voodoo worldwide (Vodun 1). The main center of Voodoo in the United States is New Orleans (3). About fifteen percent of New Orleans practices (Voodoo 1). The Voodoo religion contacts the spiritual worked Quite frequently. They believe that spirits help people in all that they do (Belgum 30-1). The Voodoo religion believes that true communion comes only through possession of the body by a Loa or spirit. Possession is very common during rituals for it is how the Loa give instructions to or help the people. They believe they get possessed for certain reasons. Such things as protection, cures from illness, or even to give warning to an individual or to the whole community of worshipers (Possession 1). When a person gets possessed, they show struggle moving and jumping around like crazy people. Then all of a sudden they go blank and motionless. They then come out of that trance a totally different person. While a person is possessed all bodily functions and gestures take the form of the Loa which possesses the body. While the Loa possesses the body it will often smoke, drink alcohol, and eat.

There are a lot of causes of the scramble for Africa, and one of them was to ‘liberate’ the slaves in Africa after the slave trade ended. The slave trade was a time during the age of colonization when the Europeans, American and African traded with each oth...
