Although Wal Mart and Publix both offer comparable grocery items Walmart boasts to be the leader of low prices while Publix truly makes shopping a pleasure with their superior customer service, quality and freshly prepared products. Publix is the largest employee owned company in the United States. Publix rewards employees with stock every year while Wal Mart is a publically traded company. This makes the employees at Publix want to make their store successful as they will benefit from it. Another item to consider between the two stores is the quality of the products being offered. Part of what makes Publix more inviting is the look of their stores. They have a cool vintage look that is reminiscent of a time gone by when life was slowed down and people were friendlier. The stores are smaller because the products are mainly grocery items. They have wide aisles and wonderful lighting but the main thing is how clean the stores are. Wal Mart stores are housed in a huge warehouse chocked full of anything you could imagine. Housewares, clothing, fishing gear, tires, the list could go on forever but the stores have a congested feeling and with so little employee help if becomes overwhelming. The selection of other items is definitely bigger at Wal Mart if you are looking for random items, but if you are truly shopping for groceries Publix has Wal Mart beat hands down. When it comes to freshly prepared food Publix beats Walmart on the selection and of course the quality. They both have a bakery, a deli, a produce section, a meat section where they freshly prepare foods but Publix makes homemade breads from scratch. They knead the dough where Wal Mart just pops frozen stuff in the oven. Publix also makes fresh buttercream icing for the cakes among many other freshly made recipes. They have a special cookbook for all of the fancy specialty cakes, desserts and breads they make. Publix follows similar protocol in all of their departments. They offer so much more freshly prepared foods than Wal Mart does. The produce department offers so many exotic fruits and vegetables that you could try something new every day. They have many organic items to choose from and the employees are standing by to cut up some fresh fruit for you. Publix has a fairly new concept called Apron’s cooking schools. They have an employee center stage doing demos several times throughout the day. They cook up a wonderful quick meal right in front of you. They show you hands on how to prepare and cook

What’s the difference between Walmart and a farmers’ market? What causes these differences? And, what are we more partial to? Tracie McMillan delves into the intricacies and complications of our nation’s food industry in The American Way of Eating. Specifically, as McMillan integrates herself into the farming and grocer/selling aspect of the industry, it is evident the food system has been extremely successful in offering ‘abundance, accessibility, and affordability’ to its consumer. In doing so, the industry has effectively implanted an industrialized system which is, in part, reason for its ability to offer ‘abundance, accessibility, and affordability’; the industry has been equally prosperous in cultivating and maintaining such a system. America’s agriculture has grown in scale, fully utilized biotechnology, and mechanized which leads to questions for the consumer as

Our decision is to invest in Wal-Mart. The choice for Wal-Mart is on the basis that their functional-level strategy is really robust, nevertheless of the fact that they do not treat their employees well. The fact remains that they are financially stronger, have a better business-level strategy, and have a corporate-level strategy than Costco. Costco v. Wal-Mart: What must we learn about them? Let start with Costco. Costco is Wholesale, Retail Corporation which operates an international chain of membership distribution centers that provides quality, brand name merchandise at noticeably more affordable rates than a conventional wholesale or retail sources. Costco 's warehouses display the largest and great product categories such as groceries, candy, appliances, television and media, automotive supplies, tires, toys, hardware, sporting goods, jewelry, watches, cameras, books, house wares, apparel, health and beauty aids, tobacco, furniture, office supplies and office
It’s easy to walk into the grocery store, or several, on a regular basis and not really notice what kinds of products are carried or how items are displayed. The differences between the stores don’t really become apparent until you walk into one you’ve never been in before. That’s when the differences really stand out.
Motivation is one of the most important factors to a successful organization, helping define and reach individual and organizational goals. There are many different theories of motivation, however; being a former Publix employee, I would say that Publix follows the two-factor theory. The two-factor theory, also known as the motivation-hygiene theory, focuses on intrinsic factors and hygiene factors. The intrinsic factors that relate to job fulfillment comprise of advancement, recognition, responsibility, and achievement, while the hygiene factors are considered to be quality of supervision, pay, policies, physical working conditions, relationships with others, and job security (Judge & Robbins, 2016). Publix likes to make an employee feel safe and taken care of. There is a policy for everything and have a great benefit plan in place. Both part-time and full-time employees sit down for a quarterly assessment with their direct department managers and, based on performance, can receive a 25-cent raise. Publix also has a system in place called an ROI or “registration of interest”. The ROI allows for an employee to express their interest in a promotion to a different department/position or even to transfer to the corporate office from the store. These opportunities increase employee engagement and give the individuals something to look forward to and create personal
Happy customers correlate directly to above average returns on investment. The fourth factor to the Publix anomaly, is the focus on existing stores. Publix earned $28.8 billion in 2013, thus making it the seventh largest food retailer in the U.S. and Canada. It is also the largest privately-owned company in the food retail industry. Abc.com (2014) This focus encompasses the company’s operational efficiency. By positioning the company’s stores in a smaller target area, the company has prodigious returns by keeping the location sites fresh, which allows the company to focus on innovative new ideas that help the brand to evolve and grow. The fifth reason behind the Publix success story is possibly the most important reason of all. Abc.com (2014) Fortune Magazine chose Publix to be in their top 100 companies to work for in the U.S. form 1998-2014. Abc.com (2014) This creates a strong bond between the employee that has no animosity for their superiors and co-workers. “One bad apple can spoil the entire bunch,” my grandmother would always say. She is completely correct in her assumption. We have all experienced said bad apples at one point in our careers, yet we can’t be spoiled by them. The sixth and final reason the customer enjoys the Publix experience is the cooking school. Publix Apron’s Cooking School offers private and group sessions ranging in price from $35-$300 for on session or a series of classes.
Walmart product selections is almost three times as much as that of HEB. Walmart is a one-stop-shop store. Customers can walk into Walmart and literally shop until they drop. Publix strives to utilize the industry-wide differentiation strategy. Although Publix isn’t open 24/7 and does not have self-checkout (which also plays a role in its strategy), it focuses on providing the best customer service and facility presentation. The grocery store chain sets itself apart from the competition by keeping their stores as neat, organized and clean as possible; as well as Publix strives to provide the highest degree of customer service and accommodation as possible. Not only is the staff friendly and knowledgeable, they are encouraged to assist customers to the best of their abilities, they even help with carrying out the groceries to your car and assist in loading. Walmart has had a long-standing presence in America society since the middle of the 20th century, seen as a place to get everything done, Walmart has become a fixation in our society. From grocery shopping, to changing your oil and even filing your annual tax returns, Walmart is always there, everyday. Started by Sam Walton in 1962, it began as a small operation catering to a small Arkansas community. It was started on principles very similar to small local businesses in small towns. Today Walmart has gotten a different, darker reputation. On the surface, Walmart may seem like the solution to everyday issues. Low-income families are attracted to the low prices, and people who work odd hours benefit greatly from the 24 hours a day that many Walmarts are open. Lately, Walmart has also managed to be publicly recognized as a store that sells many of today’s green products, including organic food, environmental conscious cleaning products, as well as, paper products made from recycled paper. However, underneath all this, Walmart has a different side. Exploitation of its workers is widespread amongst Walmarts who do not belong to a union, especially in the United States. Wal...
No longer just a place to buy food, the supermarket has become a place to cash a check, buy a birthday card, or pick up some tulip bulbs. These new extras are all centered on the idea of convenience. We all hope to find a few extra moments in our days, so supermarkets offer us a way to save time. I'll be the first to admit that buying three things at the same store is nicer than driving across town. Saving time can definitely be a good thing.
