Bread, having earned the title of a staple food in the traditional American diet, usually consists of yeast, water and flour, and then a baking process. Throughout history, having always seemed popular in countless cultures around the world, and continues to reign supreme. To be completely honest, the pre-main course bread baskets rank as everybody’s favorite part of eating out. Considering the fact that they cost literally nothing, why not fill up on a loaf of white bread, steamy, buttery rolls, or delicious warm breadsticks? Both rolls and breadsticks contend as fantastic appetizers, however, one, more superior in many ways, can include having more sophisticated looks, healthy, and just plain better than the other. Nonetheless, O’Charley’s …show more content…
Obviously, rolls from O'Charley's appear as oblong, formed into somewhat of a spherical, rectangular mush of bread, hence why they call it a “roll”. The Olive Garden breadSTICKS, however, explain themselves, sticks of bread. The process of mixing, forming, and baking these two foods prove to be explanation enough as to why they differ. As the chef back in the kitchen whips up a fresh batch of rolls, he blends together all of the ingredients, primarily yeast and water. The yeast dissolves into the water, “priming” the yeast, or waking it up from it’s dormant state inside the package. After the yeast and water get mixed, flour, salt, and sugar get added to create a thick, stretchy dough. This dough sits for two hours before it can be called upon to get into formation, (and another two hours later on) into the popular rectangular shaped rolls. The reason that this roll differs from the Olive Garden breadsticks, though, relies on multiple reasons, during mixing and baking. As the Olive Garden breadsticks continue to get mixed, the yeast, water and dry ingredient mix will sit for only 30 minutes before the shaping process can begin. Though, when the waiter at O’Charley’s brings out a fresh, steaming hot basket of rolls, accompanied by it’s side; a custard cup of butter. Since the early 1800’s, butter comprises the most important co-existing factor to rolls. However we all know, butter can be titled as one of the most unhealthy sides to any food that it one pairs it with, because butter translates to literal straight lard. No matter how often you convince yourself that one dollop of butter on your toast isn’t affecting you, it is. Butter can increase “bad” cholesterol, instead of getting rid of it. Butter can also increase one’s risk of cardiovascular diseases. On the contrary, when the server presents a basket of warm Olive Garden breadsticks to your table, instead of accompanying them with fattening butter, they get served with marinara sauce. Marinara sauce consists of tomatoes, garlic and herbs, mostly fresh and earthy ingredients. The option of marinara sauce reigns over butter as a much lighter, healthier choice, considering the lack of health problems marinara sauce could enable. Marinara sauce, which packs insanely low fat and calories, and can also provide the body with a healthy dose of protein and much needed carbohydrates. The imbalance between these two dipping sauces could show the difference between healthy and unhealthy lifestyles in future
Nearly everyone has heard the expression, “this is the best thing since sliced bread,” or something similar, but how the expression came to be is an interesting story about Otto Rohwedder and his invention less that a century ago. The invention of sliced bread has had several impacts on the world, including economic, cultural, and sociological. The revolutionary design was even banned for a short period of time during WWII, but not before people gained a dependance for the nicely cut slices.
