In Bourque Bearskin’s (2011) paper, I was touched by Nicole’s scenario which vividly emphasised on the impact of how diverse cultural values and practices can have on how people live and see the world. This resonated with me because the cultural struggle made me realise that since Australia is a multicultural country, nurses will commonly experience the ethical dilemma of being caught between your own principles and moral integrity, the health-care system’s expectations and valuing the patient’s beliefs whilst wanting to deliver safe and genuine care. Hence, this paper has enlightened me that being aware of your own cultural practices in combination with accepting the positive and negative impacts it has on your actions, is not enough. But,
The earliest member of the Bohrer Family, of which we can locate on records, was a man named Abraham Bohrer. He was born in Germany on December 14, 1717. He had a wife, Anna Lucy Schuster, and four children all by the name of “John.” They boarded an unidentified immigration boat and docked in Baltimore, Maryland on September 11, 1750. Aloysius “Louis” Baumann was a businessman who truly cared for the well being of his customers as well as his family. He was born on August 22nd, 1863 in Hirschau, Bavaria in southeast Germany. Louis accompanied his parents, Joseph and Anna, on the long journey to settle on a farm near the town of Branch in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. Throughout the duration of his early years, Louis attended public school, dabbled in carpentry and assisted his family on the farm. In 1885 he moved to a farm north of Hewitt, Wisconsin. During the next four years, in May 1886, Louis married Anna Meidl, a girl born in Newmark, Bohemia, and had their first child, Theresa, in 1887. In 1889 Louis Baumann purchased a property on North Central Avenue in Marshfield, Wisconsin to build a saloon and hall. Sanger, or Singer, Hall became a community gathering place and was later renamed to Baumann’s Hall as the business prospered.
Cultural Competency is fundamentally linked with the principles of social justice and human rights because it provides the nurses with the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills to provide equal care despite one’s cultural background. However, using the principles of social justice and human rights to educate nurses allows them to learn how to negotiate cultural differences. Removing their own cultural filters, and seeing events through the eyes of those who are culturally different accomplish this. An embedded experience, in which nurses interact with various cultures, would encourage them to adopt Cultural Competency knowledge (Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, 2008).

In addition to this, their experiences in their work and in their personal lives and communities, they already have opinions about certain groups of people. “Cultural safety would encourage nurses to question popular notions of culture and cultural differences, to be more aware of the dominant social assumptions that misrepresent certain people and groups, and to reflect critically on the wider social discourses that inevitably influence nurses’ interpretive perspectives and practices” (Browne, 2009, p. 21).

James Joseph Brown was born on (May 3 1933- December 25 2006) in Barnwell California. Him and his family lived in extreme poverty when he was a child. They later moved to Augusta when he turned four or five. When they got there, they decided to live with their aunt. Eventually, James’s mother left the family and moved to New York. He would spend a great amount of time alone, and it was hard for him to stay in school. He managed to stay in school until sixth grade. When he was still young, he would sing in talent shows. His first appearance was at Augusta’s Lenox Theater in 1944, and won by singing the ballad, “So Long’’. Sometimes, he would go to camps and perform different dances to entertain troops. During this period, he learned how to play different instruments such as the piano,guitar,and the harmonica. Later, he became inspired to be an entertainer after hearing Tympany Five,Caldonia,and Louis Jordan.
Providing culturally competent care is a vital responsibility of a nurse’s role in healthcare. “Culturally competent care means conveying acceptance of the patient’s health beliefs while sharing information, encouraging self-efficiency, and strengthening the patients coping resources” (Giddens, 2013). Competence is achieved through and ongoing process of understanding another culture and learning to accept and respect the differences.
Cultural competence can be defined as using the ability of one’s awareness, attitude, knowledge and skill to effectively interact with a patient’s many cultural differences. Madeline Leininger, a pioneer on transcultural nursing describes it this way; “a formal area of study and practice focused on comparative human-care differences and similarities of the beliefs, values and patterned lifeways of cultures to provide culturally congruent, meaningful, and beneficial health care to people” (Barker, 2009, p. 498). The importance of cultural diversity in healthcare allows for the delivery of appropriate cultural autonomy. Showing respect for others will lead to trust between nurse and patient which in turn improves healing and health.
In the clinical setting, nurses are believed to spend the most time with patients. This involves regularly dealing with people coming from different ethnicities and with different cultural practices and beliefs (Brown & Edwards, 2012). Nurses have our patients trust with their lives every day. These patients have needs that must be understood and met, whether; physical, psychological, or emotional. Nurses must provide nonjudgmental care to those in need, regardless of culture, religion, lifestyle choices, financial status, or hues of the human race. To quote Jean Watson, nursing theorist, “I am here to care for others, regardless of where they came from” (Hammarskjold, 2000). As a nurse strive to provide culturally sensitive care, they must recognize how their client's and their perceptions are similiar as well as different. Nurse enhance their ability to provide client-centered care by reflecting on how their beliefs and values impact the nurse-patient relationship. To provide appropriate patient care, the nurse must understand her/his culture and that of the nurse profession. Cultural biases can be particularly difficult to identify when the nurse and client are of a similar cultural backgroup. When we recognize and know a culture, we will know what is right for our patient, and thus may impose our own values on the client by assuming our values are their values. Recognizing differences a present an opportunity not only to know the other, but also to help gain a greater sense of self.
