Boredom comes in a period of thoughts where none of my interests are being consciously struck. It’s a selfish concept so to speak. Ideally, as individuals we would never be bored if we found happiness in all things. Everyone has their own interests and their own tastes. Thats a simple phrase that most everyone knows, but in the grand scheme of things it means a lot. This freedom of self-concept is the window for boredom to arise.
When I am happy with what I am doing, I am not bored. However, even happiness has its limits. I only want to do things for so long before I grow tired of them. Is that maybe a good definition of boredom? Growing tired of what you are doing. I love to watch movies, but as a person I can only watch movies

for so long before other obligations take precedence. Moderation is key; all things in moderation. This is a huge piece of advice, usually used for eating appropriately, but it can actually be applied to boredom very well. This is the parameter that needs to be added to my statement. When I am happy with what I am doing, I am not bored IF I am not doing it for too long. School is more important. Exercise is more important. My family is more important. In my mind, I rank things based off what is most important to me. No I don’t sit and list things off in order, but this is very much a subconscious action that does take place. I find myself feeling bored or unenthusiastic towards things, when they seem to be less important to the other things scheduled for my day. Something to note though, is that for me in particular, my disinterest in things varies highly based off of different life factors in that particular moment. Some good examples are, the amount of sleep I get, if I have worked out recently, if I am hungry, etc. I love to have patience; I think it is a beautiful characteristic for people to practice. I say practice, because we can be one way, but act differently. Everyone can practice an emotion, whether they feel it or not. I consider myself to be a very level headed individual. I am very patient, but when I am hungry this really is no longer the case. Hunger leads me to not give a care in the world about what I am currently doing, and maybe that is because nourishment is essential to life but honestly it’s probably just because I really like food. I consider myself patient, but I act a different way. In my differential equations class, I always tend to experience these negative feelings of disagreeable restlessness described as “searching boredom”. Searching boredom is experiencing negative feelings on something, and focusing on more interesting things instead, in order to relieve yourself from these feelings. What you need to understand about differential equations is that it is basically the math of words. My interest is always lost when I look at a problem, and see that there are more letters than there are numbers. Instead of listening all I can do is think of my escape route. This escape route is not a physical way out of the room, but more of a mental flight from what I should be learning to focus on more interesting activities I could be doing during this hour lecture period. What's ironic to me is one time I thoroughly payed attention in class, I found that I learned something remarkably important. My professor wrote this simple notation down on the board at the beginning of class; That time is almost always the independent variable. Even though he was speaking towards math, he planted a seed for a completely different train of thoughts in my head. Mathematicians have had it correct all along, that time is the independent variable and the things we do as people are functions of that time. We are the dependent variables. What we chose to do with our time defines our lives. It seems pretty ridiculous, but the advertisements you see about having 86,400 seconds in a day really speak to me. When I see something like that on a day I am feeling very lazy and have little motivation to get anything done, it really makes me want to change my perspective. Why am I wasting those seconds? Why am I not doing anything, instead of something I should do or want to do? This is a better explanation of my thoughts when I am bored. When I am in differential equations, I am not bored because I think what we are learning is pointless, I am bored because I don’t want to waste my seconds. In growing up, something I have tried my very hardest to do is to stop this repetitive pattern of ranking, and to learn to treat each part of my day with full importance. As a student studying Engineering, I am taught that innovation is the key to progress. I am taught to constantly be thinking about improvements, and to always be looking towards the future all the while managing to take the present into consideration. I am taught to use, interpret, and develop new technology. As a world we live so distracted. Distraction is a way for us to escape the situations we are in as well as the feelings we experience in these situations. Technology has become what I believe as the greatest distraction from boredom. We are no longer forced to sit in the silence of our own thoughts and just think, because we know in these moments we have our phones or computers to kill time with. Technology is our escape from our thoughts. I am all too guilty of mindlessly scrolling through social media all the while drowning out my surroundings. We can talk to others who are miles away, which just means we are no longer alone even if we are alone. Technology has become our escape route from social interaction. Why would you talk to someone face-to-face when you could just send them a text? Why would you say hello to a stranger you recognize passing you on the way to class, or make small talk waiting for your floor on the elevator, when you can just bury your nose into your phone and pretend you never saw them. It is the back door exit for boredom you are trying to avoid. We as humans, search for something or someone to escape it, and technology has become our guy, but my question is why is this necessary? Would it really be that bad to have people sit and think every now and then? If we did not deter our thoughts by filling our minds with distraction, imagine all the new thoughts that would begin to form. People would begin to recognize problems gone unnoticed. I woke up the other day in my room, and instead of doing my daily routine of checking every social media, I decided to just lay there and think about what I had to do for the day. I was roaming my thoughts while staring up at the ceiling of my room. I noticed a tile on the opposite corner of the room above my roommate’s bed with a big crack down it. I go in and out of my room on average seven to eight times a day, and never before have I noticed this tile. How long has it been like this, and how do I fix it? That is where my mind goes next. It is the times like these when I believe boredom is somewhat the key to innovation. Allowing ourselves to be alone, and to think alone helps us expand our minds.
Allowing myself to be bored, helps me appreciate and think about the important things surrounding me in my life more often. It helps me to find that happiness in all things. Justess is the name of the second grade girl that I mentor. Every Thursday morning, I go in to her school and help her with whatever we are working on. When its math or science, she is in the zone, but if we get to reading thats when she really seems to struggle. I've been tasked with helping her learn to read. Every now and then we get into what should be a really good book, but I notice her thoughts drifting off and her mind seems to be elsewhere. Justess is bored. She is showing the same disinterest in what we are doing, that I show to my Differential Equations professor. This 8 year old girl is thinking about snack time, or about what she is going to do at recess that day. The things that are important and surround her in her life. Age changes our boredom, and what we focus on. I think most of that comes from the fact that ignorance is bliss. I wouldn't expect Justess to be stressing over cumulative finals right about now considering she hasn't a clue what those even are. My point is that maybe Justess wont be the inventor of the newest and improved apple product because she is young, but when adults are free to roam their brains and expand upon things that strike their interests, great things are
discovered. So I let myself be bored. I know it is helping me, and I think if more people would let themselves be bored the positive possibilities would be endless.
In the essay In Praise of Boredom, Ellen Ruppel Shell states that allowing children get bored gives them the access to become creative. As she was studying this statement, she began to realize that not many parents leave their kids with boredom, on the other hand they always have their schedules set for them. Shell supports her statement by putting some of the fault on marketing. She states that marketing manipulates many parents by advertising many products and activities, making parents believe that it 's the only way their kids will become "successful" and "productive adults." She states that all the advertisements make parents worry that their children may be "wasting time" and/or "missing opportunities."
Boredom was everywhere in my world, and if you asked the kids, as often as I did, why they felt so bored, they always gave me the same answers: They said the work was stupid, that it made no sense, that they already knew it. They said they wanted to be doing something real, not just sitting around. They said teachers didn’t seem to know much about their subjects and clearly weren’t interested in learning more. And the kids were right: their teachers were every bit as bored as they were
“For the next six hours, I was going to enjoy a thoroughly secure, warm, and stable environment.” As stated by Barry. She found comfort drawing, which she often did early at school before class would start. Some children aren’t as lucky as Barry was, some go to school just because it is required. The requirement of subjects being taught in school, just aren’t sparking that flame in a child’s mind. If they had something to look forward to after class ends, such as an after school program, perhaps the excitement would build up and the concentration on studies will begin to exist again.
In the essay, “The Boredom Effect,1952, writer Ellen Ruppel Shell acknowledges the child’s mind and how creative their mind are. The purpose of this essay is to persuade the readers that a child should never be bored and that they should always have something to do with their spare time. She felt that children should taste their freedom by exploring the world. Also, she said guardians should not try to create activities or put them in sports to keep them occupied. Ellen writes “Back then, parents pretty much stayed out of children’s business.” In her thesis, she mentions that parents should let children be bored. I agree with Ellen, parents should let their children be children and let them be creative. However, parents shouldn’t control their
They need to learn the difference between multitasking and trying to do multiple things at a time. Knowing what can have little attention and what needs your full attention can help out a lot. For example when you are talking to someone, that is when your full attention is needed, as well as working on homework. When something needs a little bit of your attention it will be okay to be distracted. For example it is okay to work out and watch television at the same time, because you are just trying to either entertain or distract yourself to make time go by faster. Every day people are around technology there is something new learned. I feel as if this century kids will either be really disciplined or
In addition, the article also says “fiddling with our phones,... adresses a basic human need to cure boredom by any means necessary. I can agree with this because I always like to keep myself occupied whether it's taking out my cell phone or tapping a pencil I am always looking for a way to clear my boredom.
Teachers need to be allowed to teach the students how they want so the lesson plan is more fun and exciting. Boredom is just an emotion and teachers shouldn’t have to feel that because of them, they are affecting the state of mind of students.. Teachers should able to engage the students with their own thought process. Teachers need freedom and should not have to worry about how fast they teach a subject because the government wants it done in a specific way at a specific time. Teachers understand that students all learn differently and many teachers want to help all of their students, but they are stuck in a school system that tells them how they must teach.
The question I always ask my self is what brings people to want to do drugs? What makes them want to poison their body? When the person knows the health risks of doing drugs, I understand that doing drugs makes you high and feel good, but what in their life is so bad that makes them want to poison their body. In the article listening to boredom by Joseph Brodsky, he says that boredom is the cause of drug habits in people. Because he says that people are trying to escape from it by abusing drugs. I happen to disagree with this however. I feel like that boredom isn’t the cause of drug abuse because I then everyone would be a drug addict. I think it is because of people’s curiosities, and because of that it makes people want to try things ...
Curiosity is an important and powerful trait. It keeps your mind active because curious people are always asking questions and search for the answers in their minds. It opens your mind up to new ideas. When you are curious about something, your mind can anticipate new ideas that relate to it. It takes curiosity to discover a new world of possibilities. With a curious mind, there will always be new things that attract your attention. Pandora in Theogony by Hesiod shows us why being curious can be very dangerous. Although it may seem being curious is such a great and healthy trait because it helps keep your mind active, there can also be a downside to it.
13. Preventing Boredom and filling “free” time: To prevent students from becoming sidetracked and bored, I know it is important to have a continuous flow of activities. To ensure this, I plan all of my lessons with extra activities for unexpected “free” time. These efforts will help ensure that class time is used wisely for furthering education. I feel that the busier I keep my students the less likely they will have time for inappropriate behavior.
Getting people, especially kids interested in school is the one and only thing that no one has quite figured out yet. If you teach on a project based learning curriculum you take the risk of having kids fall into a lazy slump. If you teach primarily with textbooks and lectures, you run the risk of kids skipping and falling asleep. Is there truly a way of keeping kids entertained while teaching them the necessities? A study done in Lincoln, Nebraska by Laura Parn states “As teachers, we are getting so busy and burdened with the federal, state, and district requirements that we forget to think about the emotional needs of our students. It is not common that we have time to stop and think about what our students want or desire, but according to Damico and Roth (1994), it is necessary for the success and engagement of our pupils”. This proves that the challenges in the educational system need to be seen and acted upon by higher ups before public schools can even think about making a difference. That really does make things exceedingly difficult because we all know how long it takes federal higher ups to make decisions. Laura also says that teachers tend to forget about the emotional needs of students. Which is very unfortunate because when a teacher helps you with a math problem, or eve...
Albert Camus, an existentialist writer, believed that boredom or waiting, which is essentially the breakdown of routine or habit, caused people to think seriously about their identity,...
If you were to google the definition of happiness, it will give you an extremely shallow definition of the state of being happy. Happiness is an abstract and intangible emotion that cannot literally be defined. So how can one define it? People use their emotions, feelings, and events in their life to define happiness. Though, the emotions described by each individual will vary because each individual is their own person; therefore, not any one view of happiness will be the same.
What is motivation? Motivation isn’t just a word. It’s a feeling that comes deep from within. Motivation is what causes you to act, it’s the feeling that drives you from within, it’s what makes us want to achieve our goals. Motivation can come from all sorts of things. It can come from things such as religion, money, entitlement, or even just a feeling you get from helping others. Motivation is a very powerful word and is something that has played a very large part in shaping the world we live in today.
Motivation is simply why someone acts the way they do. It is the process of setting goals, and then and then accomplishing them. “The four elements to motivation are personal drive to improve, commitment to goals that you set, initiative for opportunity readiness, and being optimistic when pursuing your goals. Some advantages for self-motivation are being well organized, having good time management skills, and having more self-esteem and confidence in yourself.” (Skills You Need, 2001-2017).
