Sanctuary of School To some, schools are only responsible for the bare minimum. What that means is, schools are only required to teach our children the required subjects, and send them on their way. What happens after that last bell rings, and it’s time to go home? Imagine there were a place for our children to continue to learn, imagine having an escape from reality. Does such a thing exist? According to Lynda Barry, author of Sanctuary of School, before and after school programs are being cut, and we’re being told that public schools are not made for babysitting.
Let’s look at things from a wider perspective if you will. I believe that schools should be responsible for providing and funding before and after school programs. The reason

“For the next six hours, I was going to enjoy a thoroughly secure, warm, and stable environment.” As stated by Barry. She found comfort drawing, which she often did early at school before class would start. Some children aren’t as lucky as Barry was, some go to school just because it is required. The requirement of subjects being taught in school, just aren’t sparking that flame in a child’s mind. If they had something to look forward to after class ends, such as an after school program, perhaps the excitement would build up and the concentration on studies will begin to exist again. In conclusion, there are many ways to implement fun in learning. Are there various ways to keep a child in school, and focused on their studies instead of seeking excitement from crime? Providing and funding after school programs are not just going to be a success factor amongst most adolescents, it will become such a consummation in the decrease of crime being committed by children. Thus, leaving many with the thought of “why haven’t we thought of this sooner?” The talk of budget cuts should be diminished, and replaced with ideas of programs and supplies needed to take education to the next
As I wearily sat in my seat, writing an essay on the importance of electricity in the modern world, I caught myself glancing repeatedly at the clock that was so carefully perched above the teacher’s desk. “Ten minutes, only ten more minutes left until school is over and I get to go home!” I told myself. In most schools, the average school day is about eight hours long. Eight hours of continuously sitting in a chair taking notes during lectures, doing classwork, projects, etc. During these eight hours of school, students deserve a short, outdoor break in which they can isolate themselves from the stress of working all day and just relax. Studies have shown that people who take short breaks throughout the day to do light, outdoor breaks are more productive than those who do not. A short, outdoor break will benefit students due to the fact that students will have time to relax; students will be able to focus more, concentrate, and be more productive; and teachers will have more time to prepare for the next class coming.
There are many kids in this country that face a very difficult challenge each and every day. These are kids that live in dysfunctional families that sadly do not have the resources to manage a child. Instead they are more busy with getting food on the table and not losing all of what little they have already. Sadly for these kids school is their only thing they can count on to always be there. Sanctuary of School by Lynda Barry is a wonderful personal experience of what these kids go through on a daily basis. In this personal narrative she writes about the hard times she and her brother went through when they were children. She wrote of an experience where she snuck out of the house in the early morning with a feeling of panic that was relinquished
The improvements made by public schools should not be discounted, either. While there are certainly schools and school districts that remain very troubled those administrators and schools boards are not standing idly by. There are continuous improvements in such schools, and there needs to be even more. Taking money from them when efforts are being made to improve their condition will clearly on hinder such improvement. Private schools are and should remain an option for all parents, but our society mustn't waver when it comes to supporting our public schools.
Schools are where we spend half of our lives at, our kids are spending time and energy in these places to become better people in the future. There is absolutely no reason why budget cuts should ever happen in a school. If the country is taking taxes from all of the citizens than they should be conscious to spend that money on things that matter like our children. Making budget cuts takes away programs for kids to excel in and makes a child harder to express himself. Arts are usually the first programs to be cut.

...of money, but money alone is not going to solve it. There are always going to be people that are going to take for granted their education. It is the government’s responsibility to see education be equal for all, but also an individual responsibility to take the time to sit down with each other and talk about the importance of school, learning, and education.

Also, these individuals should be aware of the risks that come with certain types of activities. In conjunction to awareness, individuals should be involved in family leisure activities so that their idle hands do not become the devils workshop. Parents provide the primary foundation in the children’s socialization; if this process is not effective or neglected the result could be detrimental. It may lead children to transition into adulthood without the fundamental skills that prevent the development of a criminal disposition. Now that routine activities theory has created a clear understanding of the economics of crime, let’s focus our research on which parenting methods could prevent criminality or crime before if ever develops.
The After School Program provided an opportunity for students to work on homework, play games, and interact with friends and positive role models. The program was an alternative for students who might partake in risky behavior such as experimenting with drugs and alcohol, committing illegal or violent acts, and having unprotected sex. Parents benefited from the After School Program because they could trust their children were in a supervised place from 3:00 p.m. until they left work. Students benefited from the program because they were able to interact with their friends in a safe space without being trapped in an overbearing or structured program until their parents
education policies implement ways which child are taught to socialize early in life. such as early education has programs which teach children problem-to-solve techniques, planning skills and social skills. Sutton, Cherney and White (2014) state that youths involved in pre-school programs were more likely to graduate from high school, higher income and good job. and suggests that children involved in the early education program are less likely to commit a crime in the future and less likely to be arrested. play groups and peer support programs are developed to improve communication skills. These skills reflect on the behavior of an individual and decreases the risk of a severe behavioral problem (Brown & Putt 1999). programs like anti-bullying initiatives in schools and programs addressing violence reduction both aim to create awareness about crime (National crime prevention 2002). it also teaches children that violence is not something to put up with. Programs in school which allows police or people involved in the criminal justice system or even getting juvenile offenders to speak about their experience and the type of crime they deal with to creates awareness amongst the youth groups which can be prevented. Having reviewed the facts from both sides, those who are for additional funding for education and those who are against, there is truth to both sides. Additional funding, as long as there is strict accountability, will help all students from various economic backgrounds to have an opportunity to receive the very best education. The challenge at hand is for politicians, educators, and families to determine a fair and balanced approach to implementing measures of accountability. Overall, the poor academic achieving students do need funding just as much as anybody. School funding needs to be increased, but there needs to be accountability as well.
When you're working non stop you can get overwhelmed and stressed out. When you stop and take a break and get active your brain feels relieved. When you get back into class after break your focus comes back. It makes it way easier to rejoin class and pay attention. Transitioning through seven subjects each day can get hard and overwhelming. Recess can fix this, and that's what people don’t understand. On page 30 of the article Do you Need Recess, “ According to Dr. Robert Murray, pediatrician and co author of “ The Crucial Role of Recess in School,” giving your brain a rest helps it work better. Moving from subject to subject without a brake can overwhelm your brain and make it more difficult to retain information.” When we are constantly learning we can’t get a break we need recess to help us hold onto information. Recess also gives us rest that the society needs to continue the day. Middle schooler tend to get stressed out and bored during the day so a break will snap them back into learning. When middle schoolers learn for a long period of time they tend to zone out and not listen to the teacher. When this happens they don’t get all other information that they need to know, so that leads to bad test scores. Think all of this just because middle schoolers don’t get a break. That's saying a lot. Also according to the article, Why kids need recess and exercise, “ According to study author and developmental pediatrician Romina Barros, M.D., their conduct was likely better because, after hours of concentration, they were able to give their exhausted brains a rest before going back to absorbing information--something many young kids can only do well for about a half hour at a time.” Even middle schoolers can’t focus for a long time. Yes kindergartners may be worse at staying still and focused for long periods of time, but middle schoolers have more subjects and longer days. When they are transitioning
My grades in elementary school were poor because I had trouble paying attention to things that were not challenging. I tried to play sick just about every day but my parent were not falling for it. My favorite classes were gym, music, and art. Competing in sports is where I spent most of my time. The words of my parents and teachers went in one ear and out the other. “School just wasn’t interesting to me”
Childhood is such a sweet innocent part of everyday life. Waking up for school in the morning sure seems a whole lot easier than waking up to go work a 12-hour shift. Being a child has all the perks an adult wishes they had once again. Having to wake up at 5 o’clock every morning to go to a job that isn’t very enjoyable can get tedious quick, as to where when children go to school they never anticipate the adventures that await them. When becoming an adult stress levels will tend to sky rocket. So instead of waking up to enjoy some morning cartoons, or even arts and craft at school as children normally would, adults
At the beginning of one’s journey of gaining more knowledge, most children don’t mind school, for it is a change of environment for them. The majority of elementary school adolescents even enjoy school to some degree. As time wears on, we usually, and sadly, begin to see a change of heart. Children become fatigued from school and therefore don’t take pleasure in going anymore. Maybe their teachers didn’t teach them in the way that they learn most efficiently, or maybe students just become bored with the whole “school scene” itself. Whatever the case, it is apparent that by the time they reach high school, their interest for learning alone has died out.
