Marie Nelson’s “Beowulf’s Boast Words” evaluates the numerous acts of boasting that occur in Beowulf, dividing them into two subcategories. The choice of categories of boasting are determined by when the events have occurred or will occur; the first type of boasting refers to the speaker bragging about existing or previously occurring successes; the second type of boasting refers to the speaker making a vow towards future heroic accomplishments. The first type of boasting is commonly looked down upon in Modern English, but Beowulf uses both types of boasting efficiently and effectively. He is able to lay a foundation of great valour to himself in order to provide a greater, more powerful introduction to his type two boast of promise. This type of introduction with a type one boast serves to eliminate any cause for doubt among the “Hearers.” This paper goes beyond the boasting of Beowulf to further support the second type of boasting. Wiglaf’s vow to aid Beowulf as well as promises spoken by heroes of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings are examined.
Nelson’s paper does a sufficient job of displaying the existence of the secondary form of boasting that exists in Old English. Well chosen, detailed evidence is provided by multiple cases of boasting in both Old English literature, Beowulf, and literature inspired by Old English, Lord of the Rings. The two types of boasting are distinctly separated, contrasted, and complimented to properly demonstrate their existences in each example cited. The conclusion of the relation of bragging preceding a promise is well developed by the presentation of its use by Beowulf; such speaking is very effective. Nelson uses the example of Beowulf’s last great battle to show how even with an extensive, powerful boast of bragging and promise, his objective of slaying the dragon was not accomplished. Beowulf did in fact kill the dragon, but the problem with his boasting lies in these lines: “I shall through courage / gain gold, or battle, fierce mortal wound, / will take your king!” (2535-2537). In Beowulf, the essence left behind by a true hero is extremely important. In epics such as this one, leaders tend to have the determination and boldness of a hero. On the other hand, the main character, Beowulf, does not only display these certain traits. In this heroic poem, respect and trust come naturally. Honor and integrity are present throughout the poem. There are many moments in Beowulf that manifest the many traits that a person should have. This proves how important these attributes are to the characters and the Anglo-Saxon society. Although Beowulf has no known author, it embodies many of the beliefs and morals of the early Germanic society. The author of this epic poem uses many approaches in order to demonstrate that respect and trust are fundamental characteristics of a leader and hero.

The hero must be ready to defend himself, and his people. Mythical entities are poised to strike, and gold is to be had by anyone brave enough to fight these beasts. Treasure, feasts, and appreciation are showered onto kings and heroes by their people. In modern society, leaders work at a weekly job, are given weekly responsibilities, and are not appreciated by everyone. The values in “Beowulf’ do not apply to reality. Nothing is given to leaders out of appreciation, and there is hardly time for feasts, unlike the 10th century cultures of Scandinavia. The society of Beowulf is incompatible with the norms of modern society on a multitude of levels.
To start off, Beowulf, identified as the greatest Anglo- Saxon, pursues glory and fame. He brags about himself and his accomplishments. When it was time to battle Grendal, Beowulf states “my youth have been filled with glory”. (143-144). He boasts about what the people have witnessed. Beowulf says to his men, “They have seen my strength for themselves, have watched me rise from the darkness of war, dripping my enemies’ blood. I drove five great giants into chains, chased all of the race from the earth” (151-155). In addition to Beowulf bragging about himself and his accomplishments, Beowulf embodies that fame and glory mean more than anything else. Often readers will criticize the champions of classical and medieval epics for egotism. Critics cite examples from the Odyssey, the Aeneid, and Beowulf of conceit and egocentric behavior. Odysseus, Aeneas, and Beowulf display a well-known arrogance befitting their accomplishments. The motivation for this arrogance, to complete these tasks, to perform these feats, is often over-generalized to the point of inaccuracy and confusion. One must not let such misinterpretations interrupt the humanization of these characters. Through the examination of the desires and behavior of these epic heroes, we can discover an underlying need for recognition or honor. In classical and medieval western epics, the hero’s desire to complete a given quest is fueled by their desire to gain or maintain honor or fame.

Beowulf was a highly skilled and great fighter, but because of his over-confidence in himself the fire-breathing dragon kills him. Beowulf’s excessive pride is evident from the very beginning of the epic. He is almost always boasting about himself to one person or the other. In the first part of the epic, when Beowulf first travels to Hrothgar’s kingdom to rid him of Grendel, he talks about the mighty deeds he has done in his life. “Hail, Hrothgar, health ever keep you! I am Hyglelac’s thane and kinsman; mighty deeds I have done in my youth…they saw themselves how I came from combat bloodied by enemies where I crushed down five, killed a tribe of giants, and on the waves at night slew water-beasts; no easy task, but I dove out trouble from Geatland-they asked for it, the enemies I killed.”(Beowulf p73) One can easily picture him standing proud and tall in front of a multitude of fellow warriors, proclaiming all the deeds he has accomplished in his lifetime.
The exact opposite of the points mentioned thus far are made manifest within the character of Beowulf. Beowulf is easily able to defeat Grendel once Grendel has lost all hope of winning, ". . . remembered his final / Boast and, standing erect, stopped / The monster's flight. . ." (440-443). Beowulf is also, instead of insecure and under-confident, overly confident and a braggart.
The 8th century epic poem Beowulf illustrates a loss of community, cultural values and tradition. On the other hand, an elegiac passing of an extraordinary hero and the relationship between the themes of mortality and heroism are well discussed in Beowulf. Beowulf’s character exemplifies the Germanic and the Anglo-Saxon ideals of the hero: strong, fearless, bold, loyal, and stoic in the acceptance of fate. Despite his lack of humility, Beowulf was the definition of a hero in his own time by his demonstration of chivalry and his important roles in society.
