Establishing career goals can be essential as they may serve as milestones that lead to a successful career. Thus, I have created several career goals to concentrate my focus and enable me to maintain a structured plan. Ultimately, I aspire to have a career as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to enrich the lives of children with developmental disabilities. Before I can obtain this goal, many objectives will need to be completed. For instance, one career goal that I have is to become a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT). I have chosen this initial goal as it provides hands-on experience with the clients. Additionally, possessing this certificate will demonstrate competency and expand internship opportunities. is to participate in internship programs, which will provide real-world experience as well as facilitate future employment opportunities. An additional goal I would like to achieve is applying and being accepted into the Fast Track program at Florida Tech, which will provide the opportunity to begin the ABA/OBM master’s program sooner, thus expediting the completion of the degree. With the completion of my master’s degree and practical experience, I will complete the testing to become a BCBA. Once certified, I hope to find employment at a treatment center, which utilizes the principles of applied behavior analysis. I hope to work in a facility which would provide me opportunities to further study issues related to autism such as feeding, communication, and severe problem behavior. My greatest strength is knowing about my options.
While I know I desire a career as a BCBA, I am aware of the option to become a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA). I am also aware of various organizations that utilize BCBAs. For instance, The Scott Center for Autism Treatment on the Florida Tech campus is an ideal option to combine both in-class and hands-on experience in the field of ABA. Other local options that provide treatment include Kaleidoscope Interventions and its affiliated Puzzle Box Academy. While many options exist locally, Orlando also provides a variety of opportunities such as Nemours, Quest Kids Academy, and Lodestone …show more content…
Academy. My current weakness in the process is knowing how to make decisions.
While I have researched the career extensively, there are still things to consider. For example, while the Fast Track program appears to be ideal, a better option might be to complete my bachelor’s degree and work with clients for an extended period. Another choice I am currently debating is which organization to contact (for volunteer and internship opportunities). While I’ll strive to meet their needs, I also would like to find an organization that provides a variety of experiences. Although there are many great options for centers that treat developmental disabilities, I hope to select one that best matches my goals and reinforces my career choice.
The three most important career values to me from the SIGI values are contribution to society, leadership, and security. Contribution to society is important as I desire to have an impact on the society in a positive way. Helping children with developmental disabilities allows me this opportunity as I can partake in intervention treatments that may facilitate improvement and change, thus leading the individuals to expanded opportunities in school and future
careers. Likewise, leadership is an important career value because I wish to guide and monitor others. As a BCBA, I will be working with RBTs as well as BCaBAs. While providing supervision to these individuals, I will be able to ensure the highest quality of treatment for my clients, while simultaneously training the future BCBAs of the field. Similarly, security is important because I desire to prevent potential inconsistences and uncertainties in my future. The employment opportunities for BCBAs are vast and provide security as the field of ABA and the study of autism continues to grow. My ultimate career goal is to help as many individuals as possible. Therefore, my SIGI value of security is not only related to my own personal future security, but also the security of my clients and their futures. Consequently, this value is met due to the current increasing research and knowledge related to the study of autism and its treatment.

When we were little, we thought the word “Career” was not a big deal, but as a senior in high school the word has become our reality as we start to finish our last semester. The question we’ve been asked all these years was what do you want to be when you grow up? But our answer was simple; we don’t want to grow up. As an innocent kid it seemed like the time would never come, but it has. It’s time to get serious and really ponder on this question. My mind has wondered for so long on what my career would be. We all wanted to be an astronaut, but I never liked space or the fact of not having any gravity. What if I get lost in the universe? Maybe I’ll be a firefighter, but I never was interested. Well how about a cop? That’s it, a police woman. I grew up watching crime movies and cop shows but knew that that was never reality. I started getting interested in court cases and the mind of a serial killer. Why do they do it, was always my question. I searched for more answers and found that the behavior plays an important role. That’s when I decided I wanted to become an FBI profiler for the Behavior Analysis Unit (BAU).
With regards to my academic and professional development, I am desiring a Ph.D. program that combines research and teaching skills in rehabilitation sciences, which is one aspect that attracted me to the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Rehabilitation Science Ph.D. program. Generally, your program’s objectives align well with the curriculum I am looking for in a terminal degree. In specific, I have three main goals for completing this degree. First, I want to have the ability to conduct research independently as much as possible. From a personal prospective, a successful researcher should be able to process a research regardless of the available resources. If a researcher was trained to do so, he or she will contribute in changing the world with their research no matter where they end up at. The reason I am enthusiastic about research is that I want to be a part of a healthy community and I want to
Running into barriers while attempting to locate and navigate services for developmental disabilities are not because you don't want to help your child, or don't care - chances are, you are facing a wide rage of emotions. Some barriers that take an emotiona...
Occupational therapy is the career that I chose as my major and to do my research
During my service I hope to gain a lot of knowledge in working with those who have all different kinds of disabilities. I have worked with people with disabilities and special needs before, but I would like to be able to better my understanding and knowledge in this field, and be able to be as effective as I can in helping and serving these people. I want to gain more patience, knowing that it will take more time and patience to work with them sometimes. I want to take time understanding and giving each individual my full attention. I want to better my communication skills, whatever that may look like, and be able to feel completely comfortable with each person. I know depending on the person, they can be more sensitive, so I want to be able
Having visited the ABC facility in Stockton, read their pamphlets and visited their website, I would refer parents with Autistic children to their facilities. Though the need for insurance to cover the cost of this specialized care, would seem to limit, in general, the availability of providing needed care to the more impoverished members of the local area. Sadly, this limitation feels like an injustice.
I will discuss the National Career Development Guidelines and will address each section of the guidelines in terms of its importance in career counseling. As well, I will critique an activity that is used in elementary school setting against the guidelines to compare if the activity meets the standards.
P. Values are important and lifetime beliefs that greatly influence our behavior and attitude (SPSY 185, 2016). “NADSP (National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals) defines values as a professional who have values, skills and knowledge that constitute a unique and important profession” (NADSP Code of ethics, 2016). “As a DSP it is very important to examine one’s own values and attitudes as well as how they might factor in to the relationship with the individual that they are supporting” (SPSY 287, 2016 p: 19). “Our values and attitudes are extremely important factors given the type of work that is required in the human service field” (SPSY 287, 2016 p: 19). Professionals work closely with individuals to value them and spending time with individual. Therefore, it is the best way to learn about individual values and beliefs. Often professionals have hard time to label people, we as a DSP’s must think that the people who we are supporting are same as “we”. Being a successful DSP’s, we must need to have greater knowledge and positive influence when it comes to help people with disabilities. To become successful, we must need to look for changes in people’ lives and their past experience by asking them or by being empathy. There has not been a lot of changes in people with disabilities lives so as a DSP’s professional, we believe that we need to bring out our skills, abilities and
The major areas of my values and ethics can be summarized in six words: excellence, personal integrity, responsibility, ambition, accountability, and determination. Excellence guides me when setting targets in all my undertakings; I normally strive to achieve my best. Personal integrity and accountability enable me to make sound judgments to avoid engaging in actions that will hurt me and/or other people around me. Responsibility is important to me as it enables me to identify the part I need to play in my family, at the workplace, and in the community. Lastly, ambition and determination are applicable in providing me with the momentum needed to ensure that all my initiatives and tasks are done to completion.
Classroom management is one of the most essential skills to becoming an effective classroom teacher. Teachers who possess the ability to manage their classroom are able to create an environment where learning is the focus (Burden & Cooper, 2004). Although teachers may be well prepared and skilled with classroom management, at some point in time they will encounter a student or students whose behavior hovers authority and the functioning of the class. There is no simple way to deal with these difficult situations, but there are strategies to help. The first step is to identify the purpose of the behavior. A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), is a systematic set of strategies that are used to determine the underlying function or purpose of a behavior so that an effective intervention plan can be developed (NPDC, 2014).
I was in a remote village in the Peruvian Andes conducting art therapy with prisoners when I realized this was the most meaningful experience of my life, and it should not be. The study and practice of psychology are the place where my humanitarian and intellectual interests align. I am applying to the clinical psychology program to fulfil the training I need to continue to make meaningful contributions to society and also contribute to the field of psychology through research. A family illness that is now happily behind me delayed me from doing so sooner.
I am writing to bring you up to date on the progress that I have made on my educational goals, career goals, goals completed, goals in progress, fie year goals and action steps, ten year goals and actions steps, and potential obstacles to achieving goals. I am confident you will find the results of the report useful for evaluating the progress of my educational and career goals.
My motivation is based on two things. Firstly, I really want to help other people as much as I can. The understanding of human behaviour is the key for me to help others improve their well-being. This made me start seeking for information and experiences beyond the university’s classes and books. There was 30 hours of supervised Clinical Child Psychology Practice, where I was shadowing a professional psychologist at an Educational Consultancy. I really liked my time there and I felt like I could not have chosen any other career. In 2014 I joined a foundation where we were developing autistic children’s social skills and perceptions with movements and exercises. In these months I saw different children with different disabilities. It was
There are numerous careers related to special needs, all of which require different schooling, training, mentorships, and other types of preparation. Any type of job working with children with mental and physical disabilities can be challenging but also very rewarding when one sees the child improve (Tyrer, 2007). Different types of careers affect special needs children in different ways. For example a teacher will help them thrive in school, while other careers may help the kids improve at home or in a public setting. Special needs workers should be creative, flexible, and personable to be able to meet the needs of the child and also provide useful information for the child’s parents. It is important for one to at least complete minimal required training so one will be fully prepared to work with a child with any type of delay. Often children in schools do not improve at a higher rate because their teacher may not have the necessary training to assist them (Marković, 2014). No matter what special needs career someone chooses, everyone should have one common goal: to help special needs children thrive. Marković from the article “Work with Kids with Special Needs” puts it perfectly when she states, “the main aim is that children with disabilities get the chance to grow, learn, and socialize with children with normal development, and that these children can adapt and learn together with children with special needs. In this way, they develop understanding, tolerance, and humanity” (Marković,
