Currently, I am involved in a prospective cohort study with other colleagues from King Fahad Medical City that aims to study the effect of a low back care educational program on low back pain prevalence among health-care professionals.
With regards to my academic and professional development, I am desiring a Ph.D. program that combines research and teaching skills in rehabilitation sciences, which is one aspect that attracted me to the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Rehabilitation Science Ph.D. program. Generally, your program’s objectives align well with the curriculum I am looking for in a terminal degree. In specific, I have three main goals for completing this degree. First, I want to have the ability to conduct research independently as much as possible. From a personal prospective, a successful researcher should be able to process a research regardless of the available resources. I am particularly interested in understanding the effect of psychological, neurological, and muscular adaptations of physical activity in reducing the risk/odds of low back pain in healthy individuals and in reducing the functional limitations in individuals with low back pain. I am interested in this area because low back pain is an epidemic condition in my country causing a lot of suffering and financial burden. Entering my first year of college I didn’t have any idea of what I wanted to do. I still didn’t choose a major let alone a career. I was stuck in between wanting to make enough money that my family would be taken care of financially and choosing a career that I wouldn’t mind going in to work every day. The one thing that I was certain of was that I wanted to be able to help people in whatever I chose to do. After careful consideration and exploring the options available to me, I have come to the conclusion that I want to have a career in physical therapy. Physical therapy is the treatment of disease, injury or deformity through physical methods rather than through drugs or surgery.
For some people, doing simple tasks may seem impossible because of a mental or physical disability that restricts some seemingly simple functions. These people can seek help from a recreational therapist to help achieve personal goals that may seem unlikely for them to accomplish. As part of my senior project, I had to research a career that I’m interested in and what it takes to obtain that career. I chose to research recreational therapy, and I looked at multiple websites to see if this career is a good choice for me. I had never heard of it before and didn't know that it was a career, but as I researched more and more, I realized that it could be a great fit for me. I also looked up some colleges in Pennsylvania to see what school I should go to to receive a good education that will prepare me for starting my life as a recreational therapist. The subject came so naturally to me and I decided to continue my enrollment in sports medicine courses throughout my high school education. As my senior year of high school concluded, I explored the idea of a career in physical therapy by job shadowing at the Idaho Sports Medicine Institute (ISMI). After observing the PTs at ISMI, I was immediately drawn to a career in physical medicine. A few months later, I started my education at Idaho State and felt exactly like I did when I started sports medicine in high school. I was absolutely enthralled with my classes, naturally excelled in all of my coursework, and always had PT school in the back of my mind. I knew I would have to work extremely hard to develop a strong undergraduate transcript and build a competitive application. Throughout my undergraduate career, I have worked relentlessly to maintain academic excellence and currently have a 3.91 GPA. University of Virginia is my sole choice for scholastic development. In my capacity as a frontline nurse, I have laid the foundation for the focus of my research interests and feel that my performance, initiative, and dedication to my patients are genuine evidence of my ability to perform competently and enthusiastically in an academic research setting. Understanding Sciatica: symptoms & diagnosis. What is a sciatica? Sciatica is the name given to any case of pain that is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, running from the lower back down the back of each leg.
In the United States low back pain is the fifth most common reason that patients seek medical advice (Hoy, Brooks & Buchbinder, 2010). Approximately one-quarter of US adults reported having low back pain lasting at least 1 whole day in the preceding 3 months (Srinivas, Deyo, & Berger ,2012 ). Age is a more common risk factor for the development of low back pain with an overall increase up to age 65 years (Waterman, Belmont & Schoenfeld,2012). Some studies have shown that the highest incidence occurs in the third decade (Hoy, Brooks & Buchbinder, 2010). Shiri et al., found that increased body mass index was associated with an increase risk of acute low back pain. Low educational status has been shown to be associated with an increased occurrence of low back pain ( Hoy, Brooks & Buchbinder, 2010). Additionally, the occurrence of acute low back pain has been shown to be increased in manual workers and occupations that involve manual labor, bending, and twisting (Hoy, Brooks & Buchbinder, 2010 ). There are few studies that have investigated whether there are an association between back pain and mortality. The internship that I acquired during the summer of 2010 at the Greenwood Sports and Industrial Rehabilitation Center (GSIRC), allowed me to gain an immeasurable amount of experience during my tenure at this facility. Within this period, the exposure to new concepts within the physical therapy industry allowed me to observe and work hands on with patients of all ages and disabilities that exposed me to various treatment plans and programs to restore client’s mobility. The essential Physical Education and Exercise Science (PEES) courses taken at Lander University were beneficial to my academic knowledgebase, which prepared me and developed me for the opportunity within the physical therapy discipline. Working as an intern taught me the responsibility of time management and working within a lean schedule that allow me to further develop my skill set. This reflection paper will illustrate my classroom experience, internship experience, and learning experience.
