There was a time when box office receipts for in-theater films were heavily on the market. Many independent films in America demonstrated the success progress and how it changes over time. Blockbuster movies were booming in certain films depending on how it grew popular among viewers. A Blockbuster is, “A movie that, whatever it’s cost, has exceptionally large box office receipts” (Barsam and Monahan 494). This was also known as what makes a movie to be iconic. While analyzing the coexistence of blockbuster and independent films in America, it is easier to understand the similarities and differences between certain approaches. First and foremost, the blockbuster era meant that certain movies were really taking off. They were made with a large budget and used big movie stars. Mystery and thriller is naturally attention grabbing to the audience. As opposed to non-thriller movies that might not be as exciting for an audience. For example, a 1975 film like JAWS was iconic for the blockbuster effect. In 1985, Blockbuster opened its first store in Dallas, Texas. After the first few stores opened, founder David Cook built a six million dollar warehouse, which could pull and package multiple stores in a day. Blockbuster’s ability to customize a store to its neighborhood, loading it up with films geared specifically to demographic profiles in addition to the popular new releases, and a sizable collection of catalog titles. Blockbuster had instant success. In the early 1980’s and 1990’s Blockbuster put neighborhood mom and pop video stores out of business by offering better selection and convenience. However, success like that enjoyed by Blockbuster can foster arrogance. For Blockbuster, arrogance meant they believed they could do anything within their stores. For example, Blockbuster purchased Sound Music and Music Plus chains. This move took Blockbuster from movies to music. Secondly, this Blockbuster Music meant they were no longer renting now they were selling.

In Hollywood today, most films can be categorized according to the genre system. There are action films, horror flicks, Westerns, comedies and the likes. On a broader scope, films are often separated into two categories: Hollywood films, and independent or foreign ‘art house’ films. Yet, this outlook, albeit superficial, was how many viewed films. Celebrity-packed blockbusters filled with action and drama, with the use of seamless top-of-the-line digital editing and special effects were considered ‘Hollywood films’. Films where unconventional themes like existentialism or paranoia, often with excessive violence or sex or a combination of both, with obvious attempts to displace its audiences from the film were often attributed with the generic label of ‘foreign’ or ‘art house’ cinema.

Horror movies involve supernatural entities such as ghosts, vampires, teleportation, and being completely immortal. As thriller films are grounded in realism and involve more suspense, mystery, and a sense of panic. Though both genres will frighten the audience, it will happen in two different ways.
