The Cost of Fame
In today’s world, success is a key to survive, and for those who want to achieve success, they have to pay the cost of fame. One of the most memorable movies that portray perfectly the cost of fame in the show business today is Black Swan. Black Swan is an intense psychological thriller, which was directed by Darren Aronofsky. The plot revolves around a ballerina named Nina Sayers. She is a perfect fit for the role white swan in “Swan Lake” ballet but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like the black swan. The poster for the movie is a photo of Nina Sayers played by Natalie Portman. The photo was produced into different sizes for advertising purposes. Even though Fox Searchlight put out quite a few posters for

One of the most noticeable objects in the picture is her tiara. When we think about tiara, we think about a jeweled ornamental band that princesses would put on. Tiara usually represents femininity, innocence, and purity. In this case, the tiara is notably spikier and darker than a normal tiara. This refers to her choosing a path of evil in order to become the top. In order words, it’s the fame that she has always wanted and the cost is her humanity. However, the tiara on her head is made out of glass, so some parts of the tiara are transparent. It’s referring to the purity remaining in her soul, and it’s slowly being taken over by the evil. Additionally, while the rest of the photo is almost symmetrical, the tiara seems pointing in a different direction and creates an asymmetrical composition, which are denotations for “an excess merely results in chaos” (McManus). The fact that the overall composition is symmetrical refers to her being a perfectionist. Her being a perfectionist is also the reason that she is willing to turn evil to become a flawless ballerina. Throughout our history, “[s]ymmetry and beauty are often claimed to be linked, particularly by mathematicians and scientists” (McManus). For example, The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, while retains a beautiful symmetrical background, the painting still have an asymmetrical …show more content…
People can be changed and blinded by money, fame especially in show business where they constantly compete to each other. From the color scheme, the composition containing symbolic objects to the ways the artist portrayed his character. These elements are enhanced and influenced by classic art such as symmetry and asymmetry, humanism, colors, lighting, sfumato technique. It also has characteristics of modern art like using modern media technology, relating the photo with the content of the movie, and applying the ways of thinking of society today into the picture. The photo has successfully expressed its meaning about the link of fame and evil by showing the transformation of a young beautiful girl turned into a slave of evil. For all that reasons, the photo is one of the most artistic artwork. I believe many people will admire the effort of the artist, and understand that evil is within every
Wayne, transforms this painting into a three dimensional abstract piece of art. The focal point of the painting are the figures that look like letters and numbers that are in the front of the piece of art. This is where your eyes expend more time, also sometimes forgiving the background. The way the artist is trying to present this piece is showing happiness, excitement, and dreams. Happiness because he transmits with the bright colours. After probably 15 minutes on front of the painting I can feel that the artist tries to show his happiness, but in serene calm. The excitement that he presents with the letters, numbers and figures is a signal that he feels anxious about what the future is going to bring. Also in the way that the colors in the background are present he is showing that no matter how dark our day can be always will be light to
The painting is organized simply. The background of the painting is painted in an Impressionist style. The blurring of edges, however, starkly contrasts with the sharp and hard contours of the figure in the foreground. The female figure is very sharp and clear compared to the background. The background paint is thick compared to the thin lines used to paint the figures in the foreground. The thick paint adds to the reduction of detail for the background. The colors used to paint the foreground figures are vibrant, as opposed to the whitened colors of the Impressionist background. The painting is mostly comprised of cool colors but there is a range of dark and light colors. The light colors are predominantly in the background and the darker colors are in the foreground. The vivid color of the robe contrasts with the muted colors of the background, resulting in an emphasis of the robe color. This emphasis leads the viewer's gaze to the focal part of the painting: the figures in the foreground. The female and baby in the foreground take up most of the canvas. The background was not painted as the artist saw it, but rather the impression t...
On television, people always see beautiful actors and now with Youtube and Instagram, these effects are even more exaggerated. While watching these people our view of how we and others should act, dress and look is changed. Models not only wear the most expensive clothes and extreme amounts of makeup, but some companies go as far as to photoshop to the point where the models can not recognize themselves. This goes to show even though we push ourselves to look like these famous people they have the same struggles they may just arise in other places.
I will compare the emotions that both artworks send to the viewers when they first look at them. When I look at the portray 1, I fell sadness. That’s what the artwork is conveying to me. No one in the picture is happy or smiling. Everyone is sad, upset or indifferent. When we look at their gaze, the father is looking traight away, with tired eyes. His gesture shows that he doesn’t want to hear what his wife has to say and is asking her to stop. The mother’s gaze is on something in front of them. Her eyes are big and she seems to be giving more attention to things than the man. She seems sad sad to be spoken that way. On portray 2, the atmosphere is visibly different. The man and woman have a little smile on their faces and the kids are playing next to them. The people in the portray don’t look indifferent to each other or sad like in the other portray, they look pleased and caring. The man and women gaze are relaxed and they seem to be enjoying themselves. They are looking straight away in a pose as if someone is taking a picture of them. The kids gaze are in their
This painting of the industrial revolution is very thought provoking, and causes a person to think about of what was happening during the industrial revolution. He shows the horrors of the factories and the serenity of the nature. He makes someone want to go back in time where things were peaceful, and there was just nature. Everything was in it’s own natural state and peaceful. This painting gave viewers a small glimpse into the past of the United States and the industrial revolution. Even though this picture showed a small glimpse of the past, a picture (or painting) is truly worth a thousand
The story shows prejudice of people. Like “Lusus Naturae”, the family treats her like a monster which starts from the stereotyping of appearance. Actually the behavior and mind of the family are cruel like a monster nature although their figures are not a monster. People should be concerned more on inner sight as compared to visible sight. Also, the appearance should not be a reason to discriminate human
The meaning of a picture results in different opinions from many viewers. These images, such as artwork and advertisement, have become a source of communication in this new age of society. The advertisement I chose was a Coach perfume advertisement, a popular brand marketed towards women. This advertisement has a combination of physical features: lighting, text, and camera angles. These provoke an emotional appeal received by pampering with the perfume and gathering a sensation of love and peace, causing the audience to buy this product. A woman is born a nurturing loving creature. The world can make a woman harsh and intimidating, but when wearing this perfume it brings out the natural essence and reminds women of their true power but also
To complement her dignified demeanour, La Bella wears an amazingly intricate and extravagant blue gown. For a period when women were without a public voice and remained dependant on signs of visual identity such as clothing and jewellery, such a display of finery implies significant wealth and social status. Considering the seductive rendering of the fabric utilising costly lapis lazuli, it is clear Titian desired to present an image of ultimate feminine loveliness.
In the first scene we are introduced to the princess when she appears at the social cafe with Cegeste, a distinguished and unruly young poet. While her role at this point remains unclear, her powerful stature is clear. She steps out of her car with grace yet confidence, making eye contact with no one, yet holding her head high. Immediately she is noticed by Orpheus, by both her beauty and authority. Her clothing is dark; black long skirt and black jacket, and her hair is worn sleeked back in a pony tail. All this indicates authority, but the color choice further indicates a cool, dark presence. Throughout the film, as the princess’s mood changes, her wardrobe also changes, from business like to more romantic and seductive. Despite these changes, one thing remains constant, the co...
Although Madame Loisel isn’t wealthy or part of the social class that is considered high, she tried to do everything to make herself appear as if she is. She believes that her beauty can bring her as far as becoming wealthy or being able to socialize with the wealthy. The ball is important to her because for once her appearance is equivalent with the fantasy of rising above middle class she has dreamt up in her head and “[she] was a success. She was the loveliest of all; elegant, graceful, smiling, and radiant with joy. All the other men looked at her, asked who she was, and wanted to be introduced to her… [t]he triumph of her beauty and the glory of her success enveloped her in a sort of cloud of happiness made up of all the compliments” (175). The reality is beneath her appearance because she is not wealthy, nor is she actually happy with the life she lives on a daily basis. She easily deceives everyone with her appearance to make it seem as if she does have money. Uncontrolled self-absorption can distort lives to those who worry about their appearance too much. Another example of how appearances can be misleading is the necklace that Madame Loisel borrowed. It appears as if it is made of real diamonds but instead it is fake jewelry. The fact
The most distinguishable element of the painting is Mona Lisa’s smile. People cannot tell if the woman was innocently smiling or secretly holding back the unknown. Some people look at Mona Lisa and are intrigued by her smile and find her quite inviting, while other see her as sneaky and standoffish. Leonardo da Vinci used the technic of blurring the edges of Mona Lisa’s face to bring this mystery to life. This technique was very new at the time, but is regularly used today for the same motive. The woman’s expression is what gives the painting its longevity in the art world. Nobody truly knows what Mona Lisa is thinking or what message Leonardo da Vinci was trying to communicate. The story is untold, which leaves the audience the opportunity to infer their own opinion.
It portrays an emotion that the intended audience should know well, a deep sadness, due to the fact that sexual assault is a traumatic experience that can take a severe emotional toll on victims. Moreover, the shadow that hides the young woman’s face gives her a sense of shame, which is another emotion that many sexual assault victims likely deal with. This is one of the reasons why sexual assault victims should seek help. By reaching out to a professional, they can get rid of the highly detrimental emotions that they have been dealing with in silence. Overall, the image makes a clear pathological appeal due to the fact that it is clear the young woman is unhappy, which shows that the topic is emotional to some and should be thoughtfully considered, and also gives the intended audience a feeling they can relate to. Thus, the image is effective for the intended audience because it is realistic and relatable, leaving the audience with a sense that they are not alone in their struggle and that the emotions they have are a natural response to being sexually
Rossetti shows us the woman being painted as many different things. Although she is just a painting, the woman symbolizes how the artist views women in real life: as objects. Irony is used when the woman is painted as “a queen”(5). She is put on a pedestal in a position of power, yet she is only described as being “in [an] opal or ruby dress”(5), cementing her role as an ornament. The ruby symbolizes passion and perhaps promiscuity. Opal is a white stone that reflects many colors. White symbolizes purity; while the different colors reflected symbolize how her meaning can change, and how the artist controls her identity and can make her fit any persona he desires. The woman is also depicted as a “nameless girl”(6), indicating her identity is not important to the artist. It also shows that he does not personally know the women he’s painting, but only their looks, affirming that he bases their value off of their appearances. Lastly, the artist portrays a woman as “a saint [and] an angel”(7) and compares her to the “moon”(11), an allusion to Artemis, the goddess of virginity. In this painting, she is established as a pure virgin, which was a requirement of the time period Rossetti lived in. However, because it is one of the fantasies the artist creates, and the poem antagonizes him, this line also expresses the idea that a woman’s purity should not define her. He makes the innocent virgin and the licentious queen the only ways women can be viewed. Yet, they are the same to him. Lacking depth, their physical description is the only thing giving them any meaning. Rossetti describing the portraits conveys the idea that no matter the position in society; or what their actual personalities are like, women are just blank canvases for men to project their fantasies onto. Uninterested in a real person, the artist worships the idea of a
Women desire to become beautiful and powerful, even if they don’t say it in words. And the Photographer plays with that concept and creates that desire, that you can become that person you see in the photograph. And live that lifestyle. Photographers use techniques from the cinema/cinematic, to create the desire of viewers/Buyer/Consumers. The cinematic techniques made it possible the way people lived and the...
The colors of painting looked very cozy and warm and it matched with the next wall with colorful decorations. It covered one whole side of the hospital, which looked very cool. This giant painting easily caught my eyes from a far distance. And I thought the intention of this painting was that there was always hope for young children like the little boy in the art, since it’s a children’s hospital. This could inspire us that every child in this hospital was protected and cared, as the angel was looking after the boy in the painting. Just like the boy was taking care by an angel, it let the children visiting hospital think they were very precious and didn’t let them lose any hope. The part that the angel was caring for the boy and the boy was holding and caring a bird in his hand made me think every creature was valuable and feel very warm. That was why this art was picked to be on the side of the hospital that had a good view for everyone even from a distance. It was significant that this painting was very inspiring and encouraging to give a
