Why “Black Lives Matter” Matters
Watching the new in the last 4 years, one will see that racial tension in America is rising. As of 2016, in America four black men are killed by police for every white man of the same cause, when population is taken into account (NPR). The rise in awareness about police brutality has lead to the formation of movements against it. The most well-known of these is Black Lives Matter, a group whose goal is to improve the lives of black people in America. This organization sparked the creation of two other groups; All Lives Matter (ALM), who believe that Black Lives Matter (BLM) doesn’t stand for complete equality, and Blue Lives Matter, who support police officers. Black Lives Matter is the best of the three because

Black Lives Matter does use peaceful protest techniques and it is important to remember that there will be extremists in any movement. Black Lives Matter has gradually been getting more refined as the movement matures. This was noted in recent Washington Post article by Janell Ross and Wesley Lowery. They spoke to BLM co-founder Alicia Garza who said, “ a lot of people are channeling their energy into organizing locally” and “there are less demonstrations.” It’s a step in the right to direction to see people in the movement being focused on realistic change instead of just marching to show that they are angry. The young black people involved in the movement also know that when they are protesting it is not just for African American grievances but for those of all minorities. As sixties activist Ella Baker says “Remember, we are not fighting for the freedom of the Negro alone, but for the freedom of the human spirit a larger freedom that encompasses all.” (Opal Tometi and Gerald Lenoir). Modern protester with this mindset they are be more accepted by the average American. This spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood characterizes the competorary Black Lives Matter
The All Lives Matter supporters believe that black people who were killed recently showed violence against the policemen and they were not innocents. The president of Amherst College Republicans Robert Lucido responses, “First, the Black Lives Matter group was originally titled ‘F--- the Police.’ The organizers of the Awareness week claimed that every 28 hours a black man is killed by a law enforcement officer, but they never mentioned that a law enforcement officer is killed every 48 hours in the line of duty. The organizers may have thought it clever, but such a title is utterly shameful” (Lucido). The author uses ethos by showing facts in his response that illustrates the opposite of what Black Lives Matter group claimed; however, these
The issues of how technology is influencing our nation today has come into play with social media and surveillance in our personal lives. We use twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. to express our opinions on things and as a voice to inform people on what’s going on in today’s society. We have learned how to use the tools we’ve been given to change our lives forever; our government has access to all of our personal information in exchange for our protection against terrorism. In Bijan Stephen’s article on “Black Lives Matter” and Rebecca McKinnon’s chapter on “the Arab Spring”, they both touch on the power of technology in negative and positive ways.
The historical mistreatment, and oppression of African Americans lives remains an indisputable fact in the history of the United States. The “Black Lives Matter” activist movement focuses on the death of African American lives in the hands of police. The movement raises awareness for police brutality and injustices minorities receive in the United States. The movement calls for an end to Mass Incarceration, Police Brutality, Racial Profiling, and police militarization immediately. To begin my research I looked into the “Black Lives Matter” movement on various news sources. I then conducted research using academic databases, such as Opposing viewpoints in context. Lastly, I collected statistics from various reliable encyclopedias. The sources allowed me to narrow my subject and develop a good response. Minorities are discriminated by law enforcement, and the research will prove this.
A modern example of such discrimination is the countless fatal confrontations between police officers and African-Americans. An influx of these confrontations in the 2010s have resulted in over two-thousand protests for racial equality since 2014 alone, almost all of which have been coordinated by the Black Lives Matter organization (Elephrame). Black Lives Matter is “a chapter-based, member-led organization whose mission is to build local power and to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state,”(Black Lives Matter). Much of the attention brought to racial inequality today is by the work of Black Lives Matter, as they use social media to spread the word about police violence against African-Americans. While many societal changes have taken place since the countless marches and protests of the 1960s, many African-Americans are still stereotyped and treated differently for their
Today there are many controversial subjects discussed throughout the media. One of the most discussed is race and the Black Lives Matter movement. Recently, I came across an article titled “The Truth of ‘Black Lives Matter’”, written by The Editorial Board. The article was published on September 3, 2015, to the New York Times. In the article, The Editorial Board writes about what they believe African Americans are facing as challenges in society today, including the all-too-common police killings of unarmed African-Americans across the country. The Editorial Board is right that some African Americans have been treated unfairly, but all ethnicities have been. Life is a precious thing that comprises all ethnicities. This brings us to ask; why
Black lives matter is a social media movement that went of the Ferguson, Gardner cases etc. Also very rapidly it was to show as a opposition to the police and cops. Somehow when saying black lives matter it was like saying all life matter don’t matter. It’s a touchy subject due to why people view things and for most case I can understand. I feel that the person that made black life’s matter didn’t mean for it to be just all about black life but to inform others around the nation that there is a special problem that is only happening in the African American community and we have fix that issue . we as a society has to recognize this that the African American are not making this up this its not something being politicalized its real and there’s a history behind it so we have to seriously.
American is known for its rich culture and diversity. Black lives matter (BLM) is an international activist movement, originating in the African-American community, that campaigns against violence and systemic racism toward black people as defined by google. It was created in 2012 as a call to action for black people after seventeen year old Trayvon Martin was placed on trial for his own murder and the killer, George Zimmerman, was not held accountable for the crime that he had committed. It was a response for the anti-Black racism that still remains in our society and within the movement itself. It is a movement that goes beyond the killing of black people by police and vigilantes. It calls for the Black community to love each other, live
Within the past year there has been much contention over police brutality in America, especially against African Americans. Freddie Gray, a young black man from Baltimore, was taken into police custody because he was allegedly seen with an illegal switchblade. While enroute to the police station, Gray reputedly fell into a coma and died. After this incident on April 12th, 2015, the idea that police officers in America specifically persecute those who are black rather than those who are white has grown more and more prevalent. “Black Lives Matter” has become an infamous slogan all over the world as a result of Freddie Gray and other police brutality incidents involving African Americans. Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, illustrates
In 2015, the headlines of most newspapers and magazines have been about civil rights controversies and concerns. A prominent organization affiliated with these civil rights issues is Black Lives Matter. Also known as BLM, Black Lives Matter was founded in the summer of 2013 and stimulated by the shooting of a black suspect, Trayvon Martin, by a white neighborhood watch, George Zimmerman. BLM uses social media to campaign against violence toward African-Americans. Protests are frequently arranged around inequality, racial profiling, and the killings of black people by law enforcement by the United States criminal justice system. This movement is inspired by the African-American civil rights movement which was created to end racial segregation
"This is not a moment, but a movement," (blacklivesmatter.com). Black Lives Matter is a multinational activist movement that began in the African-American communities of the United States of America. The Black Lives Matter Movement protests against the planned violence and racism that oppresses black communities across the United States of America and in other countries. Black Lives Matter started in 2012 after the state of chaos caused by the Trayvon Martin case.
Black Lives Matter is not a bandwagon to hop on, nor is it a hashtag or a slogan. Black Lives Matter is a movement. To not support the movement or to think that the movement does not need support is outright depraved, demeaning and degrading. We too often think that retweeting, tweeting or sharing a photo on social media is supporting the movement and it’s not! This is no longer the 1960’s. We have gained our rights: that is no longer the fight. The fight is receiving justice for our black people, so no effective protesting is no longer sitting at countertops, it is no longer peaceful marching and it is no longer bus boycotting The new protest is to educate ourselves, to show respect, to get involved in the justice system, to raise black lawyers, to vote and to do jury duty. All of these things are needed to benefit the movement in stopping the corruptness in our justice system.
“Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a movement against police violence that is, as argued by BLM supporters, disproportionately and systematically directed at black people. The movement has highlighted incidents in which police have harassed and killed black men and women. BLM is considered one of the most visible and controversial civil rights movement of the last decades.” (Black Lives Matter. 2016) “Black Lives Matter is an American social activist organization devoted to stopping violence and injustice against African Americans. The group was founded in 2013 following the acquittal of In the sixties African Americans began a Civil Rights Movement that, to some, still continue today; hence, the Black Lives Matter movement. During the sixties, the
The statement “Black Lives Matter” has greatly evolved within the last year. If you support this side, you believe these words correlate with the unneeded and over excessive use of police brutality against African Americans compared to police brutality against whites, bringing racism soaring back into the US. As you may know, the statement became more predominant after the murder of African Americans
If the lives of the mistreated blacks truly matter, the people that want to change the way things happen they would reach out in a peaceful way and engage others. Instead of acting out with violence and hatred. Overall, the movement should come together as one and actively speak against the "unjust" and "wrong doing ". All across the news and social media it has been mentioned and showed many times how the Black Lives Matter movement protests turn into violent outburst, in which many times harm those black lives that they are trying to protect and support. Instead of making matters worse there should be a plan to defeat the difficulties peacefully and correct the ignorance with a powerful but sympathetic stance. The only way one can truly start change is within themselves; people cannot expect others to help or see your vision of a better [equal] world. If all results seen from performances are malice and bitterness towards the
Whenever you hear about an African American getting killed by the United States police, you never see All Lives Matter supporters protesting. The intentions of the All Lives Matter movement seem to be more spiteful, as opposed to helpful. Every time African Americans yell “Black Lives Matter”, outrage from other racial groups tends to emerge as they yell “All Lives Matter” back. It seems like the All Lives Matter movement is more of a tug a war game with Black Lives Matter, rather than an activist organization designed to bring cognizance to police abuse. If All Lives Matter is based on justice for everyone, supporters of the group would understand that African American people are treated like second class citizens in the judicial system. Therefore, the black community created Black Lives Matter to stop the United States police from murdering them. All Lives Matter was designed to disregard the inequity of African
