"This is not a moment, but a movement," (blacklivesmatter.com). Black Lives Matter is a multinational activist movement that began in the African-American communities of the United States of America. The Black Lives Matter Movement protests against the planned violence and racism that oppresses black communities across the United States of America and in other countries. Black Lives Matter started in 2012 after the state of chaos caused by the Trayvon Martin case. George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer murdered 17-year-old Trayvon Benjamin Martin, in Sanford, Florida. Trayvon, an African-American teen was on his way home from a local convenience store when he got into an altercation with (George) Zimmerman. George Zimmerman shot …show more content…
The social and civil outcries of the Black Lives Matter movement were spread using memes on popular social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook. Activists used videos to bring attention to the problems many people of color, specifically African Americans deal with in their daily lives. Activists also participate in protest and rallies to gain support. Slogans such as, "Black Lives Matter", "No justice, no peace", "Hands up don 't shoot", "White silence is violence", and "I can 't breathe", are commonly used in protest, rallies, and die-ins held by Black Lives Matter …show more content…
Some people who express an unfavorable opinion of the movement accuse the Black Lives Matter community of being anti-police. Other critics of the movement have questioned the group’s lack of focus regarding “black-on-black crime”. The group has been accused of being “inherently racist” (Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani), and others have called the movement anti-American. Some have even gone as far as to create groups to oppose the Black Lives Matter movement. Groups such as White Lives Matter, have begun showing up in small communities across the nation. The White Lives Matter group has even been seen in different countries such as
This movement is about the equality of African Americans and saying that their lives matter just as much as other races who get more rights and freedom. This movement has gone on since the time of Martin Luther King Jr. In society, African Americans are lesser than whites and are given less rights, but in the Black Lives Matter movement, not only African Americans, but also many other races are going against what society says and protesting for rights from which they deserve. This relates to the idea of going against society and making your own decisions which relates to Transcendentalism.
Today there are many controversial subjects discussed throughout the media. One of the most discussed is race and the Black Lives Matter movement. Recently, I came across an article titled “The Truth of ‘Black Lives Matter’”, written by The Editorial Board. The article was published on September 3, 2015, to the New York Times. In the article, The Editorial Board writes about what they believe African Americans are facing as challenges in society today, including the all-too-common police killings of unarmed African-Americans across the country. The Editorial Board is right that some African Americans have been treated unfairly, but all ethnicities have been. Life is a precious thing that comprises all ethnicities. This brings us to ask; why
In 2012 George Zimmerman shot and killed 17-year old Trayvon Martin in their gated community as Martin was walking home from a corner store. There have been many different stories and claims made about the case however, a 17-year old boy was shot and killed by George Zimmerman. The way people portrayed this tragedy in order to reverse blame triggered an uprising allowed people to witness the pain of being a victim during and after the crime.
Black lives matter is a social media movement that went of the Ferguson, Gardner cases etc. Also very rapidly it was to show as a opposition to the police and cops. Somehow when saying black lives matter it was like saying all life matter don’t matter. It’s a touchy subject due to why people view things and for most case I can understand. I feel that the person that made black life’s matter didn’t mean for it to be just all about black life but to inform others around the nation that there is a special problem that is only happening in the African American community and we have fix that issue . we as a society has to recognize this that the African American are not making this up this its not something being politicalized its real and there’s a history behind it so we have to seriously.
The newly formed, Black Lives Matter movement, campaigns against violence towards black people. BLM regularly organizes protests around the deaths of black people in killings by law enforcement officers, racial profiling, police brutality, and inequality in the U.S. criminal justice system. The movement was the brain child of Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi that sprouted from the hash tag #BlackLivesMatter after the acquittal of George Zimmerman. BLM became nationally known for its street demonstrations following the deaths of two Black Americans: Michael Brown (Ferguson, Missouri) and Eric Garner (NYC, New York). However, unlike the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s, the Black Lives Matter movement is a decentralized network that has no formal structure. In a modern age where news spreads like wild fire, social media is the new base for discussion on racial bias, not only in the legal system, but rather, in society as a whole. Its because of this that the Black Lives Matter movement has been able gain immense support from the younger population and has been able to grow in such a short period of time. (Garcia, 2015.). In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement social media movement, the “All Lives Matter” movement gained headway as well. The Black Lives Matter campaign pertains particularly to

It was created in 2012 as a call to action for black people after seventeen year old Trayvon Martin was placed on trial for his own murder and the killer, George Zimmerman, was not held accountable for the crime that he had committed. It was a response for the anti-Black racism that still remains in our society and within the movement itself. It is a movement that goes beyond the killing of black people by police and vigilantes. It calls for the Black community to love each other, live
The night of the incident Zimmerman claimed self defence, he was brought in to the station for only 5 hours and let free after the questioning commenced. This, plus the fact that media outlets avoided covering the story for a month after it occurred, shows how from the beginning Trayvon 's case was not given fair treatment, within the police offices as well as in the media. As fires were already boiling within Americans over the 2009 Oscar Grant case, which felt too eerily too similar to Trayvon 's 2012 case. The death of a young black american caused by a white male, who does not receive accurate punishment. Although these events did majority contribute to the birth of Black Lives Matter, Alicia Garza, the founder, states that “#BlackLivesMatter is a unique contribution that goes beyond extrajudicial killings of Black people by police and vigilantes. It goes beyond the narrow nationalism that can be prevalent within some Black communities, which merely call on Black people to love Black, live Black, and buy Black, keeping straight [cisgender] Black men in the front of the movement while our sisters, queer and trans, and disabled folk take up roles in the background or not at all.” (Shor,
Black Lives Matter, a movement that continues to be a dominant headline in today’s news. It is a movement that promotes the rights of African Americans. That is right. Marches and protest promoting civil rights and bringing to light the social injustices of the current times. This sounds very familiar to when Martin Luther King Jr. led his peaceful protest for the rights of the black community to vote. African American people in America have had a long and hard road in history when it comes to civil rights and voting. In Robert A. Pratt’s book “Selma’s Bloody Day,” He goes through the history of the transgressions and measures used by white supremist to make sure they could keep their power and prevent further rights from being given to the black community. He then walks through how the black community then protested and demanded their rights which opened the door for the

For the past four years, the Black Lives Matter movement has grown to take the nation by storm. The influence of this movement has continued to grow immensely in the face of continued incidents of police brutality. The clearance of Trayvon Martin’s killer in 2013 and the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri in 2014 stimulated this movement. Overall, many believe that the undeviating war on racism in today’s society is fueled by police brutality and anti-police violence. Specifically, the Black Lives Matter movement, which is the source of controversy regarding these topics. To summarize, this campaign is “both a hashtag and a political project that formed after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin.” (Miller). Later in the article Chelsea Fuller, senior communications associate at The Advancement Project, a multi-racial civil rights organization, states “The Black Lives Matter movement is to deal with anti-black racism, to “push for black people’s right to live with dignity and respect” and be included in the American democracy that they helped create” (Miller).

Black Lives Matter is not a movement that believes all lives do not matter; nevertheless, it highlights the fact that black lives are taken for granted by the judicial system. Protests around the world have taken place to fight for justice in the black community. The immense number of deaths of unarmed black men and women is a clear sign that they are more likely to be killed by police than white people. Physical violence and excessive use of force by the U.S. police towards African Americans are seen in the news regularly.
