On top of the highest hill in the vast grassland of the Sulla field, the ancient black dragon Goroda watched silently as the massive army of the Divine Sword guild marched across the muddy ground. Each and every one of the 5000 guild members and the 2000 allied players was ready to do battle with the legendary beast. Goroda roared his outrage as this puny group of mortals dared to stand up in front of him, and for a moment, the mix races of men, elves, and dwarves all wondered if they will come out alive in this once in a lifetime epic battle. SilverVan's elven ear twitches as he raised his holy sword "Blue Star," shouting back his challenge and defiance back to the dragon. he looks magnificent in his all white heavy armor and the army took heart from his action. As the guild leader and true architect of this mission, he …show more content…
The boss monster, Black Dragon Goroda, is the strongest monster in the game and for the six years that the game is up, no guild or much less an individual player, was able to slay the monster, not even once. So the guild mobilized its members and convinced them to prepare for one final epic battle. Only Barnes the Ranger, find the entire task tedious. But hey, this is a normal reaction to him so no one really minded. The rest were excited with the upcoming adventure since it is a way for them to leave their mark in the game they love. "SilverVan," Brixon, the human barbarian, messaged the paladin using the guild chat window. "My warriors are ready to move. Just say the word." SilverVan, who sat in his magnificent Red Rhino, turned to his left. The left wing of his army consisted of a thousand barbarian and warriors, plus a mix of bards, clerics, rogues and lower mages, totaling another 800 players. Behind them is the reserve force of 600 rangers under Barnes' direct command. "How about Barne's rangers?" There was a slight delay in chat. "Yeah, maybe. I believe so," Brixon said
“If the battle takes me, send back this breast-webbing that Weland fashioned and Hrethel gave me, to Lord Hygelac. Fate goes ever as fate must.” Of course we see kings all the time in most novels. Beowulf, the character was supposed to advanced and become one of the strongest men alive. But at the end he fails, we learn that he dies and at last he wasn't really that big. But a doom in a story it's more heart pounding. Especially when a son gets taken away from his father. The call to action. In "Beowulf" the call to action is when the character Beowulf is called in by King Hrothgar. He is brought in to be talked to. Hrothgar's kingdom in the Danes (Denmark) is pounced by the villain/monster of Grendel. Now it is Beowulf's responsibility. The weight on Beowulf's shoulders is to go find Grendel, Grendel's mother and the forever lasting fire breathing dragon. We can relate to the quote above because us readers assume that he will defeat all three and be the best of the best. But Beowulf himself doesn't believe his own lies. He boasts' about him declaring he has the required skills to defeat all three enemies. At
He lives in solitude in a cave at the bottom of the lake and is angered by the parties in the mead hall. To further emphasize the archetype, he is said to go on raids only during the nighttime. This shows more of his loneliness because he can not show his face in broad daylight. When his arm is ripped off, Grendel runs away. This shows his cowardice since he runs instead of finishing the fight on the spot. For the Anglo-Saxons, death in battle was the most glorious type of death, Thus Grendel running away would have been mocked by the crowd and re enforced the quality of courage. When the battle itself begins, Beowulf decides to fight Grendel bare handed. His comrades however stay to help him fight. This reveals the theme of loyalty. This theme is prominent during the main battle because Beowulf is shown to be, “Surrounded closely by his powerful thanes” (98). This ties into the theme of loyalty to one’s kin because although the weapons do no damage, Beowulf’s brethren stay by his side to help. This is also used to emphasize the Anglo-Saxon warrior culture, the battles serve as a way to show the listener the deep cultural significance of the kinship of the warriors. They are treated as one group,
After fighting and winning many battles, Beowulf's life enters a new stage when he finally becomes king of his homeland, Geatland. Even in his old age, his code of honor still obligates him to fight against an evil, fiery dragon. For fifty years he has governed his kingdom well. While Beowulf is governing, the dragon "...kept watch over a hoard, a steep stone-barrow" (Norton 55). Under it lays a path concealed from the sight of men. Over centuries no one had disturbed the dragon’s kingdom until one day when a thief broke into the treasure, laid hand on a cup fretted with gold, which infuriated the dragon. "The fiery dragon had destroyed the people's stronghold, the land along the sea, the heart of the country" (Norton 57).
After the sight of the dragon, the slave hurries and grabs one of the treasures around him and runs away. The dragon then becomes angry at the fact that he was robbed and decides to burn down the houses of the citizens of Geatland at nightfall. Penny 6 So Beowulf (being the brave and heroic person that he is) decides to defeat the dragon. He has an iron shield made and is prepared for even the worst to occur (his death).
“In my youth I engaged in many wars”, Beowulf boasts to his warriors, which is certainly true. Throughout his life, he faces many deadly foes, all of which he handily defeats, save one. His story focuses on the most challenging, as well as morally significant of foes, Grendel and the dragon. These creatures reveal much about society as well as Christian virtue at the time. Even after Grendel and the dragon are defeated physically, the two monsters pose a new threat to the hero on a higher plane. Beowulf is not only at risk of losing his life, but his humanity, virtue, and even spirituality.
Years after his encounter with Grendel, Hrothgar's power and influence grow until he rules an immense territory. He builds a glorious meadhall, the greatest in the land, and names it Herot. He builds roads to connect his kingdom and hires an immensely gifted Harper to play at special occasions. Grendel is fascinated by the Harper's music and tries to join the humans, but he is attacked by the frightened guards and must flee. Feeling lonely and rejected, he visits an ancient dragon that lives within the kingdom. The dragon speaks for some time, and his wicked, tired cynicism infects Grendel. He puts a charm on the young monster, making him impervious to human blades. After this, Grendel becomes a creature of pure destruction. At the onset of each subsequent spring, Grendel carries out several raids on Hrothgar's meadhall. He is very careful about this, leaving just enough men behind to rebuild and grow for the next spring.
The pessimism of the poor Danes was palpable. They had even despaired of appealing to the Christian God and had reverted to offering sacrifice to their heathen idols. Grendel had killed 30 warriors the first night and had taken even more the next night. But their pessimism is dispelled by one Beowulf who is ready and willing to sacrifice himself to repay the debt of Ecgtheow, Beowulf’s father, to Hrothgar. This Geat warrior possesses almost miraculous qualities: “He was the strongest of men a...
The hero must be ready to defend himself, and his people. Mythical entities are poised to strike, and gold is to be had by anyone brave enough to fight these beasts. Treasure, feasts, and appreciation are showered onto kings and heroes by their people. In modern society, leaders work at a weekly job, are given weekly responsibilities, and are not appreciated by everyone. The values in “Beowulf’ do not apply to reality. Nothing is given to leaders out of appreciation, and there is hardly time for feasts, unlike the 10th century cultures of Scandinavia. The society of Beowulf is incompatible with the norms of modern society on a multitude of levels.
Before going into battle, he tells his men about the royal house and his exploits in its service. Beowulf states, “I am old now,/ But I will Fight again, seek fame still,/ If the dragon hiding in his tower dares/ To face me” (lines 625-628). Beowulf is giving his followers a final goodbye as he goes into battle. He is also letting he’s followers know he is an old man and it will not be easy. Beowulf then enters a hidden entrance, too hot for anyone to stand, a streaming current of fire and smoke has blocked the passage. The beast then awakes knowing that a man has come. In the story it states, “Beowulf/ Swung his shield into place, held it / In front of him, facing the entrance”(lines 670-672). Beowulf and his ancient sword are waiting, ready for battle. The monster then comes quickly towards him, shooting out fire, rapping around Beowulf’s body as he suffers. An author, Laurence Mazzeno, writes,” In his later years, after becoming king in his homeland, Beowulf loses his life in a fight with a dragon that is guarding a hoard of treasure and terrorizing the Geats.”
Somehow the story just takes a big fast forward jumping fifty years ahead to when Beowulf is now an elderly king of the Geats. Now a fierce dragon has settled in Beowulf’s kingdom and he declares that he will take it on.
Being the only hope, yet knowing that the chance of success is highly inprobable is not a desirable situation to be in. In Inheritance, the rebels, named the Varden, are preparing for the final battle against the Empire, under the rule of Galbatorix, the man who killed off nearly all the dragons and Dragon Riders in existance, and his dragon, Shruikan. Eragon and his blue dragon, Saphira feel that they are not strong enough to overcome Galbatorix, but if they are to fail, the land of Alagaësia will be under the king’s rule for as long as he pleases. Throughout the book, I have predicted the outcome of events, connected the reading to other stories and questioned why Christopher Paolini put specific sections of the reading into the book.
Beowulf is a very brave hero, he has fought and killed many creatures before, but this battle was different. He knew this battle was of great importance to everyone, and that made him that much more nervous. This creature was fierce and had been tormenting their village for as long as they could remember, so her death would be a huge victory for Beowulf and it would be an even bigger relief for the villagers. All of the people in the village were cheering for Beowulf as he walked away headed off to the greatest battle of his life.
