Biology Personal Statement

Next year at the University of Missouri-Columbia I plan to major in chemistry and minor in biology. Since I was little it has been my long time goal and dream of becoming a pediatrician and starting my own practice called "Ross & Sage Pediatrics" (named after my nieces). Originally I was going to major in biology, but many people in the medical field told me that in order to really do good on the MCAT I should take up more chemistry than biology, so I made the decision to major in chemistry and minor in biology. I hope to use my education and profession in the medical field to make a difference by starting non-profit organizations similar to Doctors Without Borders, an organization that helps people in developing countries obtain adequate …show more content…

Since I was little, I have always been really passionate about social issues, specifically inner city social issues that pertain to education inequality and fairness in the criminal justice system. These have alway been the thing that has kept me up at night and I hope that when I am older and make enough money I will be able to start programs similar to a program I participated in last year called Cultural Leadership. In the program 24 young teens (sophomores and juniors) from around the Saint Louis area learn about the cycles of oppression through the African American and Jewish lens (although you do not have to African American or Jewish to participate in the program) and learn ways to become better leaders of the future and troublemakers of the best kind. For 3 weeks we traveled across the nation to 15 different cities, including New York City, NY; New Orleans, LA; Selma, AL; and Memphis meeting some of the most influential and important figures in American history, including senator John Lewis and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. On one of our stops we went to Money, MS and visited Bryant's Grocery
