The activity of bike riding has become more common as a use of transportation, most individuals are in favor of bikes becoming a primary source for travel; however, there are some individuals who disagree with bicycles being the new way of transporting from place to place. In a statement supporting the argument of pro-bike riding, the President of the League of American Bicyclists, Andy Clarke, mentions that “there are so many reasons more people are riding, from improving their health to protecting the environment,” she also adds “especially in tough economic times, bicycling can also be an economic catalyst, keeping billions of dollars in the pockets of American families.” In addition, more than 80 percent of Americans support maintaining or increasing federal funding for biking, which makes it seem as if Ms. Clarke’s opinion on the topic is in agreement with the majority of the nation. On the contrary, some people may argue that bikes do have negative impacts on the environment, particularly those associated with their production and disposal. In my opinion, bike riding is a healthy, economically-efficient, and environmentally beneficial mode of transportation.
Bicycling has been found to reduce obesity since this activity requires the use of the entire body it allows people to build strength in a holistic manner and maintain a healthy state. Because it helps build muscle, cycling will increase the metabolic rate of individuals for a long period of time that will last even after their bike ride is finished. Cycling at a constant pace burns approximately 300 calories per hour causing it to be an effective form of weight loss. In addition, riding a bike for 30 minutes every day would burn 11 pounds of fat in a year, whi...

...hey make such as bikes having somewhat of a harmful effect on the environment are true, but at least the total amount of pollution bikes make is far less than any motorized vehicle.
The idea of bicycles being a primary source of transportation is a sign of innovation and the beginning of a new era that is transforming the way people live their lives. This is our chance to attempt to improve the atmosphere in order to achieve the goal to end the environmental problems occurring today. Not only will riding a bike to work or the store help reduce pollution but also help people stay healthy, allowing them to live longer. It also is less expensive to own a bike than any type of motorized vehicle. There numerous pros to this topic but also cons; however, it has occurred to me that the pros out-weigh the cons massively which shows that bike riding is worth the try.
Exercise is an easy and attainable way to lose weight. A study in Durham, North Carolina showed this. Overweight men and women aging from 40-65 were split into three groups. Group 1 had to do the equivalent of 20 miles of jogging per week at 65%-80% peak oxygen consumption. Group 2 had to do the equivalent of 12 miles of jogging per week at 65%-80% peak oxygen consumption. Group 3 had to do the equivalent of 12 miles of jogging per week at 40%-55% peak oxygen consumption. Of 302 subjects screened, 182 met criteria and were randomized and 120 completed the study. There was a significant (P<.05) dose-response relationship between amount of exercise and amount of weight loss and fat mass loss. The high-amount/vigorous-intensity group lost significantly more body mass (in mean [SD] kilograms) and fat mass (in mean [SD] kilograms) (-2.9 [2.8] and -4.8 [3.0], respectively) than the low-amount/moderate-intensity group (-0.9 [1.8] and -2.0 [2.6], respectively), the low-amount/vigorous-intensity group (-0.6 [2.0] and -2.5 [3.4], respectively), and the controls (+1.0 [2.1] and +0.4 [3.0], respectively). Both low-amount groups had significantly greater improvements than controls but were not different from each other. Compared with controls, all exercise groups significantly decreased abdominal, minimal waist, and hip circumference measurements (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14718319).
Automobiles play a major role in today's society. Almost every American owns at least one motorized transportation vehicle. Some say they make our lives better by reaching places faster than before. Others say they are a harmful to the environment. Have they made our society better or worse? They may be fast, but do we as humans want our environment to suffer because of time. Face it, cars pollute. And they release destructive chemicals into the air. Air pollution can threaten the health of many subjects in the environment including human beings.
Riding a bike to work can be faster than taking your car or riding the T. On a bike, a person is able to bypass heavy morning traffic jams, eliminate the time it takes to find a parking spot, and arrive to work refreshed. A bike commuter is multitasking by getting from point A to point B and getting some exercise in at the same time.
The great changes in American society that came with the introduction bicycle in the late 19th century are often overshadowed by the influence of the automobile in the following decades. Today, bicycles are often seen as an alternative mode of transportation - a cleaner and more environmentally conscious form of travel. Because of this, it may be difficult to realize the incredible modernizing effects that bicycles had on American society when they were first introduced. Manufacturing and marketing techniques introduced by the bicycle industry were massive steps towards modern industrial practices. In addition, by making individual travel available to many people for the first time, bicycles changed the speed at which life flowed in much of America. Bicycles granted a degree of personal freedom of mobility to many for the first time, and their effect on the women's rights movement of the time was notable. Bicycles were used in war, by police, and by the postal service, among others. In countless walks of life, the availability of personal travel offered by bicycles had an incredible impact on American society.
The growing interest in cycling this is result in magazine coverage and the using of bikes and accessories in window displays that related to cycling.
Bicycling was an exciting experience for two reasons. First, it has allowed me to travel around the city. Second, it gives me a chance to hang out with my friends. I love bicycling, I think it is fabulous! I can now observe my city, the people that lived there, the architecture, and the trees and animals, etc. Sometimes in our life, we just need to slow down our pace. We're so used to rushing through life that we don't even know what we have missed, but It's hard to blame ourselves because we're busy about our jobs especially when we were living in the city. I was once like that; I head right straight to school when it's time for school. As I walk I would only stare at my watch instead if looking to my left and/ or right.
The invention of the automobile in the early 20th century has had an adverse affect on our environment. Our society has used technology in order to advance the automobile to make it better and more efficient. The automobile industry knows what sells and they take advantage of that. With this growing technology to advance automobiles also comes flaws. The biggest and most obvious flaw is pollution. Because of pollution, we find ourselves asking the question of whether this technology has helped our society more than it has hurt it.
Regular physical activity improves quality of life, longevity of life, and brings happiness. Being active does not have to be difficult, there are many ways to make exercise a part of your life, make it become a routine. Do you want to feel better physically and mentally? Do you want to look better? Decrease your risk of disease? Enjoy your life longer? By being regularly active you can score for all of the above. Exercise can be very beneficial when done regularly. How often does regularly mean? According to the Canadian statistics 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise can bring great results to the human body. There are many benefits resulting from exercising, and living an active life:
We were told the message from a very young age, Eat less, and exercise more is the only solution to obesity. That is the lie the food industry wants us to believe. In reality, it is quite impossible to burn every calorie we take in. The movie states, “It will take a 110-pound child 75 minutes of bike riding to burn off the calories in one 20-ounce bottle of soda”. Putting this in perspective, it will take a 110-pound child two and a
Aerobic exercise is a type of exercise that increases the heart rate and speeds up breathing for a continuous period. This sustained raise overloads the heart and lungs and causes them to work harder than at rest. Therefore, with weight loss aerobic activity is generally suggested far more than anaerobic activity. “Cardio-respiratory endurance, or aerobic, activities, such as walking, jogging, running, swimming, and bicycling, are the most useful for losing weight because they eventually burn more calories than do muscle-strengthening exercises, such as weight training or calisthenics” (Fine, & Kusinitz, 1995).
Depends on Where You Plug In” Paul Stenquist (2012) explains that the dangerousness of electric cars on the environment relies on where the electricity that people use to charge their cars comes from. The author reports that the amount of greenhouse gases -carbon dioxide- produced from charging the car 's battery can have effect on variation of the climate. Moreover, Stenquist states that the impact of electric vehicles on the environment depends on the amount of the greenhouse gases released from the car into the air, which varies with the source of the electricity that charges the car. Further, The U.C.S report demonstrates that there are possibilities for the electric cars to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in places where the electric utility counts on natural gas, nuclear, hydroelectric or renewable sources to run its dynamo. On the other hand, places where the dynamo powered by burning coal, electric cars might not be as good as gasoline cars for the atmosphere. In other words, the author says that places that has immaculate electricity sources might produce less greenhouse gas emission than today’s gasoline engine vehicles. However, the author mentions that gas-powered cars are getting cleaner and better, and electric cars will become cleaner if the electricity for charging the cars cames from natural and renewable sources. Indeed, Stenquist believes that the automotive industry must deliver applicable alternative to the oil-fueled internal- combustion, which is producing vehicles which boasts less emissions (Stenquist,
Today, people use their own personal vehicles to travel more than ever before. Personal transportation is no longer considered a luxury; it is now considered a necessity. The number of cars in the United States has been growing steadily since the 1970s. The number of miles traveled by cars has risen nearly 150 percent, yet the United States population has only grown roughly 40 percent during that time (hybridcars.com, Driving Trends). Although it may seem like we are advancing into the future, in reality, we are moving backwards from the effects these vehicles have on our bodies and the environment. The pollution produced by these vehicles has brought us to the day where we must find other modes of transportation that cause less harm to the world in which we live. Advances in technology have developed hybrid vehicles to try and slow down the amount of pollution. Driving a hybrid vehicle, instead of a conventional gas powered vehicle, can reduce the amount of pollution that affects our lives and the environment around us.
Do people ever feel tired and sleepy at school, or at work? Have body aches that worsen with time? Have problems trying to fall sleep at night, feel sad, or depressed? Have any difficulty remembering things, or memorizing important information at school or work? Do people feel socially pressured, or have problems socializing with others? These are very important questions that people need to ask themselves in order to be aware of their well-being, but most importantly, they should ask themselves: are they living a sedentary or active life? Are they having enough physical activity and exercise to live a healthy life? As Plato states: “Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while
People ride bicycles for various reasons. Some people ride bicycles for sport, fitness purposes, as a mode of transportation, fun activity, and some people ride bikes to simply relax and clear their mind after a long day. Regardless of the reason you ride, it is important to know the factors that contribute to bicycle and helmet safety. A study in 2014 shows that 103.7 million people rode a bike that year and 34 percent of Americans age three or older rode a bike at least once in that year (“Study: 103.7 Million Americans Ride Bikes”). The importance of bicycle safety cannot be underestimated. According to the 2008 Alabama Traffic Crash Facts, there were 182 bicycle crash injuries and four fatalities. In 2008, children 14 years old and under
In this modern era, the level of pollution worldwide has been increasing consistently which in turn has brought harm to humans via many different ways. Consequently, the government must find a solution to solve this problem as speedily as possible. However, banning the ownership of private vehicles is not the only and definitely not the best way to decrease pollution. Although carbon emissions from vehicles do contribute towards a significant amount of pollution, banning the ownership of private vehicles in modern day society is unnecessary because pollution can also be caused by many other factors such as bad lifestyle choices on humanity’s part, lack of stricter or enforcement of environmental laws by governments as well as the fact that vehicles are an essential part of modern city life.
