Air Pollution Control: Banning Private Vehicles is NOT the Solution

In this modern era, the level of pollution worldwide has been increasing consistently which in turn has brought harm to humans via many different ways. Consequently, the government must find a solution to solve this problem as speedily as possible. However, banning the ownership of private vehicles is not the only and definitely not the best way to decrease pollution. Although carbon emissions from vehicles do contribute towards a significant amount of pollution, banning the ownership of private vehicles in modern day society is unnecessary because pollution can also be caused by many other factors such as bad lifestyle choices on humanity’s part, lack of stricter or enforcement of environmental laws by governments as well as the fact that vehicles are an essential part of modern city life. The most important reason why ownership of private vehicles should not be banned is that vehicles are an essential part of modern city living. Without vehicles, a lot of inconveniences will occur. For example, people would be forced to walk quite a distance to school, in the case of students, or to other places. They need to go through the hassle of waiting for and using public transport. This can be quite the problem in rural areas where public transport is unreliable at best and can even be non-existent. According to (Jong Gatoona 2010), One reason people avoid public transport is that it wastes valuable time. When it comes to going somewhere, public transit will in most cases take more time to reach the desired destination when compared to driving there. For example, 30-40 minutes of driving will instead take 45-65 minutes when public transit is used. The government can pass and enforce stricter environmental laws, thus stopping pollution from worsening any further. Also pollution can be caused by many other ways due to bad living choices made by people, so banning ownership of vehicles is not the only way to decrease pollution. Besides, vehicles are an essential part of modern city living, so the government should find another solution to stop pollution such as implementing solar powered vehicles rather than just blindly banning the ownership of vehicles. Carbon emission from vehicles should be reduced and the government must think of a better way of solving the pollution problem rather than banning the ownership of private vehicles. Lastly, government should find a better solution to solve the pollution problem besides the banning of the ownership of private vehicles which clearly does not work.
