Biblical criticism is crucial not only to the interpretation of the Bible, but also for doing mission. Our approach to the Bible and understanding of biblical principles impact our service to communities. Dalit hermeneutics, for example, empowers mission efforts related to social issues. However, our approach to the Bible and our service to community transformation seem to be a monologic effort. Historical and literary approaches tend to seek a single message in biblical texts. In mission activities, there is a tension between local churches and para-church organizations and as a result each claims for its legitimacy and pursues a single agenda. The Historical and Literary Approaches
Historical criticism or historical-critical method may be defined as an analytical study of anoriginal historic context of a text. It strives to derive an original meaning of a text that the original author(s) intended to convey to the original audience(s). I. H. Marshall defines historical approach as a study that aims to convey historical information in order to determine what actually happened and is described or alluded to in a particular text. The three main categories of historical approaches are source criticism, form criticism, redaction criticism. Thus historical approach examineshistorical development of biblical textsby studying various sources used in the making of texts, the ways in which those sources were modified prior to writing of those texts, and the process of selection, abbreviation, and expansion of later editors. Literary approach, on the other hand,may be defined as a literary study of biblical texts supposing that everything in a narrative world comes together to create a context of a meaning. According to David M. Carr, the history of Scriptural interpretation indicates that religious texts are popular candidates for reinterpretation and, as such, are spaces wherein the personal identity of the reader frequently inscribes itself at length:
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis1:1.) God’s perfect wisdom created everything. In Genesis 1 and 2 we can see that God has loving and gentile nature when He created the earth and heavens. God created man in his image and we are the only creation that God breathed in the breath of life for human beings (Genesis 2:7). God did not do this for any of other creations but only for humans. The Bible has many scriptures that tell us how creative God is. Genesis 1;26 states “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” God created all of this for us to have fellowship with him.
In the book “The Art of Biblical Narrative” by Robert Alter, there is one chapter (Chapter 3) titled “Biblical Type-Scenes and the Uses of Convention” (Alter 47). Alter describes several different stories (but similar in some ways) in the Old Testament that can be difficult to interpret in today’s culture. Alter describes how reading any book (more specifically the Bible), requires use of conventions, which he describes as “… an elaborate set of tacit agreements between artist and audience about the ordering of the art work is at all times the enabling context in which the complex communication of art occurs” (Alter 47). In other words, an agreement of how the writing is done; it can be pretty complex as well. He states that there are stories in the Bible that have the same stories of narrative, but there are different characters, they often are told several times in the Bible. Alter uses several of examples, like how patriarch is driven by famine; or where someone is found and is invited to eat with them, or a betrothal (engagement) near a well/body
The foundation of a Christian worldview is the belief in a personal God, creator and ruler of the universe. The Christian worldview views the world through God’s word, providing the framework for humanity to live by giving meaning and purpose to life. Metanarrative Essay The Biblical metanarrative can be explained by a Christian as the true and triumphant story from the beginning in Genesis until the future is prophesied in Revelation. Others who may not be a Christian do not understand the true power and love God has over us and for us and may just simply see it as a story or a rule book that they don’t want to follow. They see the Bible and all the things and plans God has for us and our lives and just think they don’t want any part of it and instead they live in sin.
