The Future of the Workplace The future of our society is in the robot’s hand. According to Kevin Kelly. In his article “Better Than Human: Why Robots Will-and Must-Take Our Jobs”, increasing automation in the workplace must and will eventually occur. This is because it will benefit our society and increase production. To effectively prove the benefits of automation, Kelly uses his tone, organization, and strong examples to help create a convincing article. Kelly’s authoritative and matter of fact tone within the argument are utilized to prove how automation in the workplace will benefit our society. While talking about how robots and modern technology are taking our jobs, he begins to describe the future of our society where most of the …show more content…
Throughout his article he uses charts, lists, and pictures to display the influence of robots in modern society. One example would be his predicted list of steps that go through possible outcomes that would occur as robots are integrated into our society and begin to take our jobs. The beginning and end of the list both state “I am so glad a robot/computer cannot possibly do what I do now” (311). This shows how people have no reason to fear robots or computers taking our current jobs since everyone will eventually adapt and find new occupations leading them to be back where they started. By using a layout which presents information in a format that makes readers view increased automation in a positive rather than sinister way, the audience will be more inclined to believe and support his argument. Additionally, including this organization and layout within his article helps to make his purpose clearer and more understandable to the reader by allowing them to see and interpret the information in a different and interesting way. Without this type of organization and layout his readers would likely not be as engaged in the topic and would lack an understanding of the reasons behind why increased automation will impact our society in a positive …show more content…
For example, he begins the article talking about the industrial revolution that took place in the 19th century, when about 7 out of 10 workers lost their jobs to machines that were able to replace them. However, he then goes on to say that although this eliminated many of the jobs people used to work, it allowed for new occupations and opportunities to be created (299-300). The use of historical examples such as this helps to provide evidence and back up his conclusion that increased automation will be a positive impact on our society. Also, these historical examples make his argument more convincing since it shows the readers that the robot taking over can relate to other events in history while also showing that history is just repeating itself in our society by developing along with the new advances that have come
Kelly starts off his argument by relating back to the industrial revolution. “Two hundred years ago, 70 percent of American workers lived on the farm. Today automation has eliminated all but 1 percent of their jobs, replacing them (and their work animals) with machines. But the displaced workers did not sit idle. Instead, automation created hundreds of millions of jobs in entirely new fields” (299). One thing that Kelly did that was effective was relate back to
Carr states how Google, and the internet itself, have a financial stake in collecting the crumbs of data we leave behind. Apparently these companies do not want us reading slowly or for leisure. Carr then ends the article by stating that we are turning into robots ourselves, and that we are relying on computers to mediate our understanding of the
Together they work together as a whole in order to persuade his audience of those involved in technology. Carr uses these strategies in order to back up his information and validate his point. Carr begins by using pathos by stating an anecdote from the movie A Space Odyssey, then he uses logos by stating factual evidence and statistics, lastly Carr uses ethos by stating appropriate vocabulary and conceding to opposition. Throughout the article Carr compares the past and present and how the Internet has changed not only himself, but also people. In order to show his credibility, Carr uses research and examples of other credible writers who have the same beliefs as he does on the Internet. Due to the article being lengthy in text we are able to assume that Carr does that on purpose in order to validate his point that the Internet is affecting our mind as it shortens our attention span and ability to think creatively. The purpose of the excerpt is to persuade his audience of those involved in technology that people in the society today are unable to have complete focus on a longer text due to the Internet causing us to artificial intelligence. For this purpose, Carr develops an influential tone for his audience
Robots are important to humans in the workforce, even though, it may not appear so. In Better than Humans: Why Robots Will- and Must- Take Our Jobs, Kelly initially unsettles the reader by noting that our, “job [will be] taken by machines”- if not already taken (Kelly 300). The reason why
The question of what should be automated in our world is one that deserves serious contemplation. In a time when technology seems to race past our population at an incredible rate, the thought of our whole world being automated is not a radical concept. It has been predicted that in the near future, every aspect of our society will contain some sort of automation. But what is automation exactly? A Webster’s Dictionary for college students defines automation as “the handling and fabrication of materials by automatic machinery, especially when no part of the process is done by hand.”1 The same source gives the definition of automatic as “operated by self-acting machinery.”2 My idea of automation is a machine taking over a job that a human used to perform in such a way that the machine acts on its own to accomplish the task. Webster seems to aim at automation under the terms of machinery; but in our world today, most of the automation we are concerned with involves computers. Computers are said to be a billion times faster than human beings and are known for their capability to hold more information than humans ever could. So in a world where automation is beginning to gain more and more ground on a daily basis, most aspects of our society have seen its effects.
Throughout the article, Ford uses data to provide information on the current state of unemployment. He notes that from analysis, it was determined that the U.S. market is highly polarized from existing technology. Because of this polarization, it will be challenging for workers to find new jobs, if AI becomes more widespread and used. Ford concludes that, “it becomes somewhat difficult to imagine just what jobs might be left for even the most capable human works” if AI ever matches or exceeds human intelligence.
At times Gillis seems to be against the idea of robots taking over jobs when he states that billions of people will be out of a job because they have all been replaced by robots. Whereas at other points in the article he seems to like the idea, for example when he talks about how there is time for the adjustment to be made between replacing humans with robots, and how as long as people stay up to date with the advancements none of this will come as a surprise leaving as many humans as possible NOT out of a job. Since the article was written to inform it was not a bias written article. The author chose to show both good and bad sides of robots advancing into a more complex and sophisticated concept. When the author states something good he would often times follow with a downside to the issue, for example robots will do the jobs that humans don’t want to do, the dangerous, dirty, or difficult jobs, but that means that more people around the world be jobless because robots are doing the same job but better. Towards the end of the article Gillis focuses more on the concern of two billion people being out of a job, because robots can complete the same task without needing pay, breaks, health care, or any attention from employers. Gillis Talks to Futurist Frey who states, “It is more like a wakeup call, we are going to be transitioning the jobs we have so
The short stories, “August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains”, I, Robot, and “Harrison Bergeron” show how the machines begin to control the lives of the humans and gradually become predominant figures in the society. Our over-usage of technology limits our ability to think critically for ourselves. Robert Reilly argues, “… you cannot construct thinking machines on the one side and laws which forbid certain fields of thinking on the other …” (18). I agree with this argument as it applies to most technological inventions which include setting certain limits to programs. These limits of certain fields of thinking include the ability to partake in activities without the instructions of a human, or being capable of disobeying certain commands, or having the ability to criticize other machines or humans without a set of instructions entered. Consequently, these programs or machines tend to always surpass these limits by either hacking or having bugs in their systems. These short stories demonstrate how the modern society considers technology to hold greater value than human life and lets technology rule its life. By letting machines do most of our working and thinking, we limit our minds from being creative and having proficiency in presenting new
The involvement of politicians who couldn’t let the power they’ve incorporated along the years, to be given up. Thus, the conception of a society that worked like a machine, and evolved on the idea of the technical world, couldn't be more realistic with the involvement and the presence of these power structures that weakened the will to replicate the natural world of the ecosystem into the more technical and circuit like aspect of the machines. The idea of cybernetics with the human brain and the society working like a
It is not ethical to replace human employees with robotic automation and computer-controlled systems. It is important to be mindful, how and when to use robotic automation as robotic automation is useful, when used sparsely. Robots are a problem for humans because, the technology of robots is becoming smarter, more reliable industrial robots and drones that lead to better factory production. It is often cheaper to buy an industrial robot or program than to train a human worker and pay them for their job. The major cost difference of robotic automation is often a major factor in why human jobs are replaced by robots, as with salary and overall price per employ.
Robots are over-taking us. Or are being taken over by robots? There have been many robots developed to make life easier. Robotics has had some positive effects in the performance of certain jobs. It can help us complete difficult jobs that use materials that are not safe for humans to handle such as radioactive materials. A single robot can do heavy tasks that would require 10 people to complete. However, this savings in time and money for companies could result in loss of hours and wages for employees.
In today's society, robots come in different types and qualities, and robots’ use was mainly in the laboratories and factories; however, that has drastically changed where their uses are changing at a high speed. In addition to that, they have spread throughout the world. The main function of robots is to replace the work that people used to do, or perform tasks that man cannot. A robot is a mechanical or virtual device that uses a computer program, or electronic circuitry, to carry out its functions. In modern science, robotics refers to the study of robots is robotics, which deals with designing, constructing, operating, and using robots and computer systems for controlling and processing information and providing feedbacks. However, as much as robots replace human labor, individuals or organizations can use them in dangerous environments that might be harmful and beneficial to humans. Therefore, to understand the logic behind the creation of robots, one should learn the pros and cons of robotics, in the current society. This is because people are using this technology without having a deep understanding of its effects. However, an objective evaluation of the use of robots, in the modern society, shows that they have a positive influence on human beings, but if the robots were overused, it could lead to a negative side. which shows why human beings should use robots wisely that will result an improvement to their societies and own lives. Robots have become interactive equipment whereby they have become part of human life. In this regard, people use them directly or indirectly to enhance the quality of their lives. However, Sharkey argues that there are ethical issues that arise because of using robots to enhance hu...
Machine learning and automation has played a large role in the ever changing labor market with new industries gaining momentum and old industries becoming obsolete. With the increasing amount of research and improvements in automation, feelings of anxiety and disdain towards automation have become normal for workers. Jobs are lost to machines due to the convenience and efficiency that machines offer, however, not all types of jobs are replaced. In a study done by a professor of economics at MIT, David Autor, the impact of automation has actually shown to complement labor by increasing the demand for other jobs that require the use of a computer (Autor). The common anxiety and fear of total job loss is a clear misconception;
This leads to the idea that automation has divided human workers and creates unemployment. David Ricardo was economic politist who fought against the problem of automation. Ricardo believed technology would change living standards and concluded that machines might one day make goods so cheaply that there would not be any competition between factories if they paid laborer a living income (Brown, 2012, p. 134). Employers believe this to be false saying there is little effect if any due to the cause of automation. With the rise of automation, it was in matter of time that the unemployment rate would increase. Even with the massive rise of automation, the United States and economy kept making jobs. Positions were gone, but new technologies created other jobs. Employers say are positioned in different title within the same company or in the same position at another company that has not automated (Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, 2017, p. 1). There is several reports and forums that say as time goes, more jobs will be lost and than more jobs will be created from automation. “The World Economic Forum released a report in January 2016 claiming that we will lose a net 5 million jobs by 2020. This is an estimation based on a subtraction of 7 million jobs but an
To conclude, robots could be the backbone of the society that will result in a technological revolution. Because of robots various characteristics that do not experience fear, nor exhaustion and they are precisely programmed, which make them able to help in case of need, housework, and factories production. Society needs to put the issue of robots into consideration to satisfy any shortage exists in the world.
