Organizational Diversity represents the differences amongst people that are likely to affect their acceptance, work performance, satisfaction, or progress within the organization. It shows the ins and outs of an organization as well as how having a diverse workplace will benefit your company through several factors and perceptions of many different people. However, there are two different types of diversity, the first being Surface-Level diversity which deals with the observable attributes such as race, ethnicity, sex, age etc. The next type is the Deep-Level diversity which deals with the attributes that aren’t as openly visible but can be inferred after experience, like certain attitudes, beliefs, values, and or personalities. Organizations should be concerned if they are having trouble creating and sustaining a diverse workplace because it is becoming the next business trend that everyone is doing. There are many studies of research proving that organizational diversity and inclusion are resulting in more productive and efficient workplaces. According to McKinsey's research, it shows that gender diverse companies are 15% more likely to outperform their peers and ethnically diverse companies are 35% more likely to do the same. If organizations don’t learn how to create a sustainable diverse workplace then it shouldn’t be too far before the market kicks them out with companies who are diverse. If companies were to make diversity a priority it would give them the advantage over their competitors because they did make it a priority and created a sustainable diverse work environment. Within that diverse workplace is double, triple or even more diverse perspectives that they have working to find solutions to become more productive. When you have a diverse workplace, you have input from all different kinds of people that have different insights than you might have, having all these choices allows you to weed through them all and find out the most useful. Mckinsey’s research proves that diversity can help business’s reach and expand their goals further than they would’ve ever imagined before. Diversity is such an important aspect in organizations to succeed, it
Diversity in the work place is one of the leading causes of innovation in United States’ companies (Hewlett, Sylvia Ann, Melinda Marshall, and Laura Sherbin). Some of the largest companies in the United States are also on the list of fifty most diverse work places in America, companies such as AT&T, Kellogg’s, Master Card, Wells Fargo and many more huge companies, coincidence I don’t think so. Innovation leads to economic growth, competitive advantages, and is an in important factor for businesses to thrive. With diversity in the work place everybody comes with their own way of looking at things which brings new ideas, thoughts, and process which increase productivity. Why would we destroy the great diversity that we tried so hard to get? Sounds counterproductive especially in a globally connected world that we have

Merriam-Webster defines diversity as “the condition of having or being composed of differing elements; especially the inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization” (Merriam-Webster, 2016). With diversity including many different elements, the concept of workplace diversity also covers a broad spectrum of topics, and continues to evolve as many companies look to expand globally. This subject has become increasingly important among managers over the last couple of decades, and has helped to reinforce other concepts such as affirmative action and equal opportunity employment. While most people believe that everyone should have the same opportunities available to them, and that we
It helps to promote the organization which leads the company in the direction of becoming an international force to be reckoned with. When diversity is embraced in an organization, it grows the global portfolio and provides employers and employees with multiple options. It helps a person learn to be flexible and to overcome obstacles that get in their way. We all know that the world is diverse with many different cultures, genders, religions, and ethnicities. However, implementation of diversity is imperative within an organization because it allows access to a larger pool of complex ideas. As demographics shift globally, diversity is a necessity that organizations need to embrace in order to show their commitment to being open to change. Diversity in the workplace is important for the organization and the employee because it allows the organization to flourish through outreach and recruiting efforts.
Within an organization, diversity is considered a having a population of people that are of different races or cultures working collectively. From this collection of people, a variance of perspective is formed and talent is fostered in order to maximize performance. These great minds work
This document will explore what a company can do to foster diversity in the workplace. The business case highlights the development and implementation of organizational initiatives that could:
Diversity is a highly important issue in today’s business, especially in a globalized company. Workplace diversity helps to get better solutions to business problems (Schawbel, 2012). When you have a group of individ...
The common theme perpetuated today is encouraging diversity in every facet of our social interactions, our workplaces should be more diverse, our nonprofit boards should be more diverse and so on and so forth. But is diversity all it is hyped up to be? I would contend that it is not and could be detrimental to an organization that focuses on diversity rather than ability. I would recommend that organizations are representative of the area that they are located but have the people with the best ability be prioritized as first hires. Individuals that are in more homogenous areas are more likely to give more time and money because of the perception people have about helping people that are similar to themselves.
Diversity Issues In society, today success in many organizations and in our personal lives is dependent on how we understand diversity consciousness around us and how we can use it to our advantage. That’s not to say that people and organizations can’t be successful, but to neglect and disregard the world around us that is so diverse with people, cultures, and different work ethic can hinder a company’s growth, be successful, and make it difficult for a person to become a strong diverse conscious leader. Diversity Leadership Leadership, has many definitions to include exerting influence, motivating, and enabling people to see and realize their potential (Bucher, 2015, p. 218). A common goal is what leaders and the people they work with try
The impact of diversity in the workplace is contingent upon several factors. Across companies diversified workforces are becoming increasingly common. To successfully manage a diverse workforce, organizations are ensuring that employees understand how their values and stereotypes influence their behavior toward others of different gender, ethnic, racial, or religious backgrounds; are gaining an appreciation of cultural differences among themselves; and behaviors that isolate or intimidate minorities are being improved (Noe et al., 2010, pg. 302).
While there are plenty of potential benefits for organizations that are diverse, there are also some challenges that they may face. One of the first and most difficult challenges that a diverse organization may face is the risk for unconscious bias, prejudice and stereotyping (Nelson, 2014). It is understood that most people struggle with things that they do not know or understand. Managing diversity is more than simply acknowledging differences in people; it involves recognizing the value of differences, combating discrimination, and promotion of inclusiveness. This is not always an easy task.
The researcher believes, in this fast-changing era, any kind of company or organization should be able to improve the quality of workplace diversity by having some important main factor to boost the new paradigm of a diverse workplace, such as:
Diversity is all around us and how organizations deal with the notion of diversity can be complex and quite diverse. We know that being diverse in the workplace is important to the organization's success, should be recognized, accepted, and embraced. It’s how the organizations live up to what they believe in and must go above and beyond legal compliance and requirements to promoting diversity and inclusion. Otherwise, employees may view the organization's vision and policies as lip service and only be tolerant of diversity because the organization said so.
Diverse workplaces are composed of employees with varying characteristics including, but not limited to, religious and political beliefs, gender, ethnicity, education, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation and geographic location.” (Brookins, 2014) Diversity within a small business is crucial to the success of that business no matter what type of business it is. If a company is not diverse then the people whom they interact with will not have a connection with managers or employees of that company. For example: my father’s company interacts with over 100 restaurants in Baltimore and the surrounding areas, in order for the company to hold them as a client they have to have a connection with them on a personal level. So, in order for that to happen his employees come from many different backgrounds and
