In society, today success in many organizations and in our personal lives is dependent on how we understand diversity consciousness around us and how we can use it to our advantage. That’s not to say that people and organizations can’t be successful, but to neglect and disregard the world around us that is so diverse with people, cultures, and different work ethic can hinder a company’s growth, be successful, and make it difficult for a person to become a strong diverse conscious leader.

Other skills are important like technical and organizational skills, but as leaders it’s hard to lead a group when there is little to no understanding of how they can impact the group or organization. This is where diversity-conscious leadership comes into play. According to Bucher (2015), “Diversity-conscious leadership refers to the process by which people influence and empower others by recognizing, understanding, and adjusting to diversity in all its forms,” (p. 221). It can allow leaders to increase the thinking abilities and to relate to the variety of cultures around us. They develop adaptability skills which is key when dealing with a diverse workforce. With technology improving everyday it allows the world to communicate with others from far away. With so many people behind giving opportunities to people that are not citizens of the U.S. and agree of allowing them to enter the country and work just like everybody else. It challenges us and is opportunity to adapt and learn from people from different parts of the world. They have to understand and practice the tools needed to manage a diverse workplace. As discussed in The Loudest Duck leaders can employ these methods to obtain a harmonious, all-inclusive environment: appreciate, promote, employ and celebrate diversity. Leaders must show appreciation and interest in the diversity of their workforce, not just look at percentages and how those are fulfilled but truly engage in understanding and developing the challenges and successes diversity brings. They need to understand how their subconscious is predisposed towards other's differences and develop a character and attitude that is not biased or predisposed to people and situations that are only similar to them. It's important for leaders to have an open-door policy that encourages sharing thoughts, rationale and feelings will help unify the diverse workforce. Leaders more than others need to understand that for a company to succeed everyone needs to feel valued and appreciated regardless of the
As more interest groups competently voice their right to career development and representation, corporate enterprises are under pressure to foster authentic diversity. These efforts start with leadership awareness and commitment and then include
In the fast-paced, global economy that is so prevalent today, organizations will always need managers, for they are the proverbial squeaky wheel keeping their company functional. Thompson (2015) described management as a necessary function in any business; however, when people are the focus, leadership exercises the most influence on the success of an organization. The value of a true leader is most apparent when the inevitable conflicts and misunderstandings arise in today’s diverse healthcare workplaces. Certainly, diversity can lead to tremendous innovation in all industries as skills from various demographic populations and ethnic groups bring unique ideas to a team. However, diversity can also lead to misunderstandings
Leadership Challenge in the multi cultural workplace may benefit from being managed by helping people to manage changes in terms of personal development or leadership role changes within organizations. Leaders may get caught the needs of globalization and cultural characteristics by using different practices and styles of leadership.
However, the key to successfully building a diverse, high-quality workforce for tomorrow begins with a strong leadership commitment and knowledge of where the organization is today. Moreover, experience has demonstrated that successful diversity initiatives depend on positioning the organization first. (Department of Personnel Management, 2002)
It helps to promote the organization which leads the company in the direction of becoming an international force to be reckoned with. When diversity is embraced in an organization, it grows the global portfolio and provides employers and employees with multiple options. It helps a person learn to be flexible and to overcome obstacles that get in their way. We all know that the world is diverse with many different cultures, genders, religions, and ethnicities. However, implementation of diversity is imperative within an organization because it allows access to a larger pool of complex ideas. As demographics shift globally, diversity is a necessity that organizations need to embrace in order to show their commitment to being open to change. Diversity in the workplace is important for the organization and the employee because it allows the organization to flourish through outreach and recruiting efforts.
Throughout this semester—as a class—we discussed why and how diversity is important, and how we can manage diversity in successful and productive approach. My aim in this paper is to clarify what—I believe—ought to do as an ethical leader toward promoting diversity. First, I will briefly discuss the importance of ethical leadership and diversity. Then, I will shadow on other dimensions in understanding diversity and how to achieve them. Finally, I will conclude with my personal statement which is: “diversity—besides being a positive tool both ethically and economically— goes beyond to be the guiding tool for a bright future for the mankind. I believe that accepting diversity has a profound positive effect not only for organizations but to all societies worldwide.”
Diversity plays a major role in society. People tend to perceive one another by their physical appearance. This creates a mindset that may affect one 's path to leadership. Relating physical appearance to the work force the individuals that have a greater physical stature tend to receive more recognition to leadership and power, than shorter individuals. Research is shown that taller people are more successful have higher authority, higher professional status and are projected as leaders.
Living in a country where it was founded by immigrants, diversity is everywhere you go especially in the workplace. There are many types of diversity; ethnicity, gender, religion and age just to name a few. Working in a diverse organization it can give you a taste of the real world, and what you will deal with wherever you go. There is so much diversity in the world today so it is a benefit to experience it in the workplace as well. You are given the chance to learn so many things from different cultures, why wouldn't you want to work in a diverse organization?
Today’s management in the workforce is composed of all types of people verses thirty years ago when white males held a majority of upper-management positions in companies. These positions are now held by a mixture of ethnic back grounds and women who hold just as many if not more management positions then men. Just by looking at the changes in management demographics shows how important it is for people to understand cultural competency in the workplace. Dr. Roosevelt Thomas Jr. (1999) stated, “Diversity is the collective mixture of whomever we have in our workforce characterized by their differences and similarities” (p.11). Managers and supervisors must understand the characteristics of a diversity mature individual; they also need to be able to articulate the differences between affirmative action, managing diversity, understanding and valuing diversity to build skills that transforms awareness into productive and supportive workplace behaviors.
On a more individual level, openness to human diversity plays a role in adjusting to the changes of the future. People are discovering that even within cultures, individuals come from diverse backgrounds, have different personalities, and prefer different ways of life. Young leaders can build a stronger relationship with their followers as they enhance their own appreciation for human diversity. As people become more diverse, leaders must learn how to communicate with them as individuals if a vision is to be shared, a cohesive group to be formed, and a goal to be achieved. Despite differences in opinions, the leader and followers can work together to complement each other as they move toward the mission of the group. By exposing themselves to all kinds of situation and communicating with many types of people, young leaders can develop an appreciation of human diversity. Conflicts caused by differences among individuals' personalities and cultures have created many ethical issues, and the number will only increase in this global society.
Diversity is a notion, when applied to the majority of circumstances, can create a positive conclusion. The trick to producing a positive outcome is often how the different aspects are brought together. Consider a classic dinner combination peas and carrots, the two colors look appealing and the two flavors comes together as one making a superb side dish. Now consider oil and water, these two substance are not often considered a good combination. Although, this is not always the case; olive oil and vinegar (which is water based) when mixed, come together into a delectable salad dressing. Diversity and inclusion should also apply to humans by bringing people together who are different it can creates a whole that is enhanced by the uniqueness of each individual.

The military service spends a lot of time training soldiers to become leaders, while teaching skills to increase the knowledge aimed to transform smart, young people into effective leaders. Basic Training, Noncommissioned schools and Officers program pick up where the civilian schools leave off. Think about programs on workplace diversity, with their stress on communication and team building. An important component of team building is cultural change, because if teams do not work effectively all employees must understand and embrace cultural change. There is no doubt that today's leader’s success depends on how they mold and develop cultural change
