As living organisms, foods are one of the resources that essential to life to function the body normally. I have been experiencing with health and nutrition issue in both developing and developed societies. As referring to the period when I was in middle school in Northwestern Thailand, I still remember the time when many of the children and adults suffered from eating disorder, hypertension, underweights, Type II diabetes, abnormal body development issue and other disease that related to nutritional problems. Honestly, I can express the advantage of MNE from my own experiences. My live before haven’t been in MNE was very different from my live after have been in MNE back in high school. Obviously, I didn’t know how to take care of my body balances, health, and didn’t even know how to read nutrition fact and how to manage the daily calories, fat and sugar until I have MNE. All I was doing was that sleep, eat, study, watch movie, play games and I often ate fast food, meat and sugar. Because of that, I gained more weigh every day and became fat and then overweight within two years. When my childhood friends from Thailand seen me, they tried to make fun of my body shape and judged me the way I looked base on my appearances. I felt very depressed and embarrassed to go to their party and celebration. So, I went to talk with my school counselor about the issue that I faced through and she put me in MNE class. After been in that class, I have learned how to manage the daily calories, fat, sugar, and how to keep my body balance. Moreover, I also learned how to make and prepare for some of American delicious breakfast such as pancakes, waffles, French toast, egg dish, fruit dishes, crepes and much more. Due to the habits of children, they will not be interested in reading the information about healthy food choice and they do not know how to worries about their body and health issue at the early age. Obviously, all they know is playing with their favorite toys and eat. Moreover, children can’t be learned by themselves without being taught. Nutrition education also provides the practicing of making a healthy food for the children at school that helps students from learning the cooking skills and other skills related to nutrition. Therefore we do need to have mandatory nutrition education at any school and every child at any age should learn what nutrition is and how its work to help them improve their knowledge in nutrition and food chain. Furthermore, I would disagree with those who said Nutrition is not for the student to like or dislike the foods. Nutritionism is an ideology that believes that the nutrients in foods are the key to understanding them. Nutritionism believers are so focused on the nutrients that food contains that they forget about all other aspects of food. The problem is that consumers rely on packaging to tell them what nutrients a food provides, since nutrients cannot be obviously seen, and they rely on science to tell us what nutrients are good and which are “evil”.
One of the most insidious “diseases” plaguing our nation is poor nutrition. While obesity is an epidemic, we focus too much on heavy people and not enough on all the others around them that are truly malnourished and yet don’t show any “traditional” signs. These other portions of the population shows their irregular nourishment through high rates of chronic illness and even possibly through mental illness. Just because someone is “this”, does not mean they are nutritionally sound. So while in 10 years’ time almost 50% of our population will be obese, a much higher percentage will be malnourished if we keep on this trend. Inevitably malnourished populations will continue to be a public health crisis through the rise in chronic disease and higher medical costs due to the burden these populations put on the healthcare system. This is why we need to focus on reducing food deserts, increase nutritional education at a young age, and create a culture of mindfulness around cooking and eating whole foods.
I wish to study the “Nutrition” bachelor 's degree course because health is the most important thing in our live. Although “health is wealth”, health is priceless.
