Today our workplace duties often consist of repetitive motion skills. These can be strenuous and debilitating if not performed correctly as they place stress on the joints, muscles, tendons, and bones. The term ‘ergonomics’ is used to describe the science of designing the job to fit the worker, not forcing the worker to fit the job. The purpose of this memo is to discuss how ergonomic solutions can increase productivity and decrease long-term injuries, such as musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), in office settings at little to no cost.
Implementing Ergonomics in the Workplace
There are many different ways to implement ergonomics into an office workplace or any workplace for that matter. They include: the rotation of employees, ensuring adequate break times, ensuring that there are enough employees scheduled for physically demanding tasks, alterations in scheduling to ensure that employees do not perform too many demanding tasks in one shift, and proper maintenance of equipment along with proper use of equipment (Richman &

According to Mr. Downing, “It’s often about teaching people how to use their bodies. It’s the most expensive thing they’ll ever own, and they don’t know how to use it” (Ergonomics, 2015, para. 11). One may be surprised at how many employees don’t know how to properly sit at their computers or how to properly adjust their chair, for example. This can easily be solved by simply bringing somebody in to train them of the proper use of office equipment. “In the office environment, a misconception is that having a perfect chair will be better for the body. However, individuals need to have proper posture and practice stretching during breaks, which helps strengthen the muscles” (Ergonomics, 2015, para. 15). As technology improves and time on the computer increases, symptoms for these diseases begin to appear more frequently. Sitting on the computer for hours on end makes you prone to developing a musculoskeletal disease since you are not being active or exercising your muscles. Ardahan and Simsek (2015) analyze the interaction and affect on excessive computer work and disease in the musculoskeleton. Their study includes 490 participants who work in a government office in Turkey, and observe how their bodies were reacting to their work environment, excluding workers who are already struggling with pain coming from a previous disease. Results were taken from the experiment by filling out questionnaires that attempted to document the level of discomfort that they experienced. More than 25% were discovered to not take a break during their session on the computer, but found that the average amount of time spent on the computer was 7 hours. The workers recorded musculoskeletal pain symptoms mainly in the neck area and back. Age was not a determinant factor when it came to being more prone to experiencing these symptoms. In some of the results, it was found that women are more likely to have pain in certain areas in comparison to men, and overall dealt with more pain. The data from the study proved that the more use you get on the computer, the more likely you are to develop symptoms of a disorder in your musculoskeletal system. To ensure that you don’t suffer through the pain, the results show that taking breaks from long computer usage is beneficial. Ergonomics helps prevent workers from injuries due to improper care of their work environment. For example, having wrists against the desk edges cuts the blood flow to your hands and this can cause a worker to have wrist strains. Ergonomics is also the science of designing and arranging work stations in order for them to be used safely and easily.

In order to protect the well-being of workers and improve their overall quality of life, the implementation of ergonomic strategies in the workplace is becoming increasingly popular. A physiotherapist’s speciality is treating “individuals across the life-span who have illness, injury or disability affecting the neuro-musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, vascular, and neurological systems” (Ontario Physiotherapy Association, 2015:3).
