Benefits of Community Outreach: Mobile Health
Outreach programs are a dedication of time to benefit and improve the quality of life within the community. There are many different types of community outreach including; non-profits, community-based organizations, school programs, and the focus of this paper, Mobile Health Clinics. (Hills et al., 2014) stated, “The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has expanded insurance coverage to millions, but other barriers to access remain. They bring awareness to the communities that don’t necessarily know how to deal with health issues. They bring in their health care services, but they also do additional things for the community as well. Mobile Health Clinics bring education and training to these communities to assist people in a better understanding to why they are there, and what they are there to do. Education is a great part of what they convey to the community as a whole. They are educating them on issues about themselves, and those surrounding. This is so they can take the preventative measures to not only take care of themselves better, but the people around them too, so that they are living not only a healthy life style, but an overall better life style.
To reiterate why Mobile Health Clinics are beneficial to the community there was a study done in 2014, by the Health Access and Better Impact via Technology and Services (HABITS) for Life Program, performed by Brown-Connolly, et al., which showed the benefits to having such clinics and this was done over a three year period, 2009-2012. North Florida has several community organizations that provides a health promoting community service. The community organization I have chosen to discuss is Wolfson Children’s Hospital. I will be discussing the following four topics concerning Wolfson Children’s Hospital; what type of services are offered, what is the cost to the client or family (if any), how is the agency funded and why is the organization important to the community?
Health care providers not knowing their surrounding community impacts the way they provide health care to a patient. I hope to use my background in community work with underrepresented populations and the qualities I gained to hopefully reduce and someday diminish the concern that health care isn’t keeping up with the demographics of the surrounding community. The third health care concern I will talk about is another near and dear to me which is the severely low quality health care women in developing countries receive.
Improving health is in the best interest of everyone, including non-health professionals. Health managers need to be constantly looking for ways to improve access to health care, the quality of the care, and cost containment. Often, the biggest barriers to accessing healthcare are cost and location. Lower income individuals just do not have the resources to have optimal healthcare, or cannot take the time away from employment to deal with health issues. One potential solution to help with these problems could be “telehealth.”

During one of my undergraduate courses, “Community and Population Health”, I completed a paper on my community and access to healthcare. During the research and community outreach performed to meet the goals of the paper, my eyes were opened to the plight of small communities in regards to access to quality healthcare. This plight has become my passion, and has formed the basis for my vision of the Family Nurse Practitioner role.
In week five we discussed program planning and management and why public health core functions are a critical factor in implementing community initiatives. “The essential functions of public health include assessment, policy development, and assurance” (Chamberlain, 2018, p. 1). Today, there are many issues that hinder the quality of healthcare. Studies show that most people reported unfavorable evaluations of seeking medical care due to factors related to physicians, health care organizations, and similar affective concerns. Also, many participants stated that they do not seek medical care due to traditional barriers such as high costs, inability to obtain health insurance, and time constraints (Taber, Leyva, & Persoskie, 2015). To solve these issues, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement has create an initiative that they hope will improve healthcare and make it more accessible to all populations.

It is my duty to conduct outreach in populations that are hard to reach like in rural and urban communities. In the rural communities, individuals have little to no access to computers and social interactions as well as limited public transportation; which limits their ability to receive resources that are beneficial for their lives. Meanwhile, in urban communities, individuals have access to computers and social interactions and access to public transportation, but lack the finances to obtain these valuable resources. Health by definition is the complete physical, mental and social well-being (Burch, 2001). In the past health has been defined as the absence of disease. Health promotion enables people the ability and resources to improve and control their overall health. Being able to adjust and adapt to various social and physical environments in day-to-day activities is a trait of a healthy individual. Health promotion is not just the responsibility of those individuals in the health field. An individual?s well-being reflects whether or not that person has a healthy lifestyle. Therefore health promotion becomes an issue for employers, retailers, sports and policy makers among others because issues such as safety and environmental factors will have an influence on the well-being of an individual (Ottawa Charter, 1986). Collaborative and coordinated efforts to provide safer goods and services, and a cleaner, more enjoyable environment should be the goal for all. The goal of all involved should be to provide a healthier environment that will provide a better well-being for the population. Promoting health requires the detection of any barriers that would hinder the health promotion process and removal of them. Promoting health is, also, educating the public to current health issues.

Public Health Nursing (PHN) aims to improve the wellbeing of the population by promoting health and preventing disease among all people in the communities (Public Health Nursing, 2013). The PHN utilizes the primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention to help improve the health of the communities. The PHN process is applied to all levels of practice. Interventions are “actions take on behalf of individuals, families, systems, and communities to improve or protect health status” (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012, p. 191). This paper will identify PHN interventions such as screening, outreach, and referral and follow-up, health teaching, and counseling that was identified in the PHN in the 21st Century project that this author completed as part of the PHN experience. This paper will also identify if the interventions were at the community, system or individual/family level.

Since a significant part of the population is young females, there is a need for services regarding gynecology, family, and pediatric care (Taylor, 2004). Despite most of the population being young, diabetes and hypertension also play a role in the population and therefore, services are needed to address these issues (Taylor, 2004). Since most of health care center populations are from low income households, health care centers usually provide enabling services such as “case management, translation, transportation, outreach, eligibility assistance, and health education” as well as other comprehensive services (Taylor, 2004, p. 8).
