Ben & Jerry's Case Study Company History Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield founded Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream in 1978. Over the years, Ben & Jerry's evolved into a socially-oriented, independent-minded industry leader in the super-premium ice cream market. The company has had a history of donating 7.5% of its pre-tax earnings to societal and community causes. Ben and Jerry further extended their generosity by offering 75,000 shares at $10.50 per share exclusively to Vermont residents, so that they may help those who first supported the company; Ben and Jerry's wanted residents to profit from their venture as well. In addition, steady growth and a widely recognized brand name helped Ben and Jerry's obtain 45 percent of the premium ice-cream market, yet the company stock price remained stagnant at $21 a share for several years. While the majority of corporate managers were under constant pressure to meet their shareholders' demands, Ben and Jerry were quite the opposite, frowning upon traditional business biases based on short-term interests and large profits. The Wendy’s corporation and Bob Evans Farms are both restaurant companies based out of Ohio. Wendy’s was founded in 1969 and now has over 6,000 restaurants worldwide. On the other hand, Bob Evans has over 600 stores located solely within the United States. Both of these companies will be evaluated in terms of their financial ratios. In order to compare the financial success between the two companies we looked at their 2014 year-end 10-k reports.

The supermarket chain now boasts over $25 billion in sales annually (Mujtaba and Johnson, 2012). To withstand the test of time and develop such a stronghold on the market, Publix has excelled in its global business community or macroenvironment, as well as its market environment or microenvironment.

Senior Management of PepsiCo is evaluating the potential acquisition of two companies – Carts of Colorado and California Pizza Kitchen – in order to expand the company’s restaurant business. If indeed PepsiCo decides to pursue the acquisition of one or both, they must decide how to align each of these business units in its historically decentralized management approach and how to forge relationships between the acquired business units and existing business units. Social responsibility allows for the market system to be centrally controlled by forcing shareholders to unwillingly contribute to social responsibility. While this idea of social responsibility may help companies in the short run, it will ultimately hurt them in the long run. Each person has their own values and responsibilities and “society is a collection of individuals and of the various groups they voluntarily form” (55). Businesses, as Friedman understands, are separate from this society since individuals are the only ones who can hold values and responsibilities.
