The song “Believer”, by a popular group, Imagine Dragons, is a widely known song, but for some people, it has a deeper meaning than just a good song. “Believer” is a song about how the singer wants to be himself, and not be want others want him to be or expect him to be. The song also talks about how the pain that people feel makes them stronger. However, the pain in the song is the pain of following expectations and not being free. Not being free to do what you want to do, and not doing what you want just because others say its wrong is the theme of the song “Believer”. A character in the story “Raymond’s Run”, written by Toni Cade Bambara, can relate to this issue. A girl named Squeaky is pressured by her own mother to be a “girl” and do what the society expects her to do, which is being a “strawberry” or “flower”. Yet Squeaky is a character who does not listen the constant pressure being put on her by her mother and escapes the society around her by running, which is what she loves to do. The theme of “Believer” can translate to the story of “Raymond’s Run”, because both are about disobeying expectations, being what you want, and doing what you want to do. She first protected Mary Louise, but after she was betrayed by her, it seems like she went all in for running, not caring for anything else, because she was hurt by Mary Louise. So she put running as her first priority and made sure nothing would get in her way, nothing would stop her freedom to run. Her freedom of running is the drive which keeps her going. She feels like that she is caged, behind invisible bars, and left alone. But she does not give up -- even though she is alone and has no one to lean on. So her freedom of running keeps her going, even though society does not approve of
